David Rabe is a well-known playwright and this novel is about disposable people. It's a short book, centered on the lives of two people involved in the Vietnam war. One is a new soldier; the other is a prostitute. Both have miserable lives. The novel begins following them as individuals, from chapter to chapter, until they meet. What follows is very touching, and very horrible. War is hell, and I say that because that statement plays a significant part in this book, right at the end. I finished this one and had a tough time sleeping that night. It's powerful.
