This is a story about a guy who decided it would be
great fun to build a catapult so that he could lob rocks into the
Pacific Ocean. Jim Paul, the guy in question, knows nothing about
mechanics, so he gets together with his friend Harry, who does. They
need money for the project so they apply to the local Arts Council,
explaining that they want to explore “catapult consciousness.” All of
this takes place in California, and they get the money, of course. The
story of how they build their contraption takes you on a wild ride
through both history and mechanical engineering, and it’s more fun than
