It's a series of short biographies about Americans who
changed the world. It begins with Astor and ends with Gates. The
author, H.W. Brands, offers eye-opening insights into the qualities
that these people shared and he writes so beautifully. You can pick up
the book and read any of the stories in no particular order. However,
if you start at the beginning and work your way through you'll gain a
greater understanding of the forces that have driven American business
throughout the years. This is one of those books that helped me make
connections to so many things. I filtered what I know about heating and
heating history through the lives of these people. As I considered what
was going on in America at a certain time, I was better able to
understand why certain systems of central heating came to be when they
did. I'm sure that wasn't the author's intent, but we all bring
something different to each book we pick up, don't we? This one made me
think in a somewhat different way, and that's what a good book should
do. Good stuff!
