In case you don't know, this is a tale about poor
Della, who sells her beautiful hair for $20 back at the turn of the
century so that she can buy her beloved Jim a gold chain for his watch.
Jim, on the other hand, sells his gold watch to buy Della some
decorative combs for her hair. It's a wonderful Christmas story, filled
with love and selflessness, and I guarantee that child on your lap will
smile when you get to the end. And later (and this is for you New
Yorkers) take the rest of the book down to Irving Street and grab a
stool at the bar at Pete's Tavern. This is the oldest bar in NYC, and
it's where O. Henry penned many of his stories. Time stands still at
Pete's. While you're there, quietly raise your glass to a great
American storyteller, and smile.
