He accompanies each set of pictures with descriptions
of what times were like back then. He covers topics such as Air,
Traffic, Housing, Rural Life, Work, Crime, Health, Education, and so
on. Often when I'm doing my research, I'm lulled into a sense that life
a hundred years ago was more romantic and somehow simpler. When I start
feeling that way, I take Mr. Bettmann's book down from my shelf and
reread a few of his stories. Then I look at his picutres. Believe me,
we've never had it so good! This work gives you a good feel for the
conditions that existed when central heating was being developed. There
are some terrific sociological perspectives here that will lead you to
greater insights into the "whys" of the technical side of things - if
you keep a watchful eye.
