get an IR thermometer for the job

As somebody mentioned, a decent IR thermometer should be able to get the job done.If you don't have one, buy one (<$100), since you will always have a need for this handy device In some cases, depending on how close the pipes are to the sheetrock, you could do it by feel. But all the IR thermometer has to get is a decent differential of say 3-5 degrees to establish the "line(s)" of the heat source(s) . A camera will not do any better since it is based on the same principle and is a lot more expensive.

Energy audit company

I have seen some guys who do energy audits for leed or green built certifications have them. Call around and you could probably get them to do it for a fee.

Does anyone have am Infrared Camera to rent for a day

I am trying to locate some steam pipes in a ceiling without opening the ceiling. An infrared camera is what I need. They are $495 for three days minmum to rent. If anyone in the Boston area has one, I would be happy to rent it from you a day. I'm in Newton. Thanks. Steve

I know my favorite plumber in the entire state, nay the world has one. Gary Wilson. You could try sending him a nice email, but I know that if I owned a camera like his I would not lend it out, rather you could offer to hire him to do the work for you. Just a thought.

Go make friends with your local fire department. They should have one. Make a donation, or buy them dinner. If they don't use it a lot, they make come with you to see what it does. Good thought but unless they have at least a 3rd one in reserve I doubt they will lend it. These are tools that they use at every fire related response Imagine a fire with a kid still inside and their Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) has been loaned to an HVAC person for hire. That would be front page news. Borrow or buy an infrared thermometer, with experience it will work for you just as well. TIC's work by distinquishing temp differences along with some visual interpretation. Since the pipes are concealed a infrared thermometer would register the temp changes for you to interpret. Oh, I don't know

In the major cities, that could be a problem. But smaller departments love to drill. And if you ask nicely and supply the post drill dinner (nothing fancy) I'm sure they'd do it.
