I know of no reliable way to calculate actual savings.

There are too many variables, but the book does have stories about jobs that showed big savings, and how these came to be. I think you'll enjoy it. 

How about a pdf version

to cut down on printing costs - and its associated energy usage?

btw, I've heard a rumor - green is no longer a color ! The word now means something different.

You are the logical person to write such a book. As you know, a bunch of us in the field are getting great results in "greening" of steam heat, but its a tough sell sometimes due to the lack of a general protocol. I have some good, unofficial case studies but that doesn't always translate well to the skeptical potential client.

So I've ordered a copy, and if its true to form, you've given us both something to learn from and to help sell a job. I will recommend it to homeowners as well. Maybe you'll have "monster steamy deal" for all the books! Anyway, there won't be any excuse for steam to continue to be a "lost art."

Hi Boilerpro- I had started writing up my own protocol for increasing the efficiency of steam heating systems with particular attention to "virtual downsizing" of the heating system via inlet restriction or tamper proof radiator vents. This is not a new idea, of course, but one that has to be revisited IMO since oversized systems with oversized oversized boilers are generally the root of excess fuel consumption.

But when I saw your first article and the general subject matter of those to follow, I knew the subject was in good hands. I've followed your posts over the years on undersizing steamers and the necessary precautions. Your experiences are more or less similar to mine. What a time saver for me!

And now Dan has piped up with what promises to be a good volume as well. I'm thankful to those who have put all their thoughts in print since we desperately need the knowledge out there.

Case in point: I did a walk through of a large steam heated public facility with two major vacuum systems; one wing is a Paul derivative and the other wing a two pipe vacuum return system with a duplex "Domestic" vacuum heating pump. The piping and radiators are tight, with no leaks anywhere to be found. However, the Paul system has had all the vents replaced with conventional types and the simplex "Domestic" vacuum pump cast aside in favor of a conventional condensate pump. The condensate hangs out in the system for so long that the when the system shuts down for more than an hour or two, the boiler feed tank over fills and dumps its contents into the boilers by gravity. Maintenance staff dumps somewhere upwards of 200 gallons every day into the drain.

The vacuum return two pipe system has been hacked into with radiator vents that screech from the pressure (they're only towards the farthest part of the system). Why? One return pump has the wires disconnected with hot wires dangling dangerously, and the other pump pops the breaker. The overflow leads out and into a sump. No condensate ever makes it back to the boiler. One hundred percent fresh make up water! They have a large room filled with drums of water treatment chemicals that cost them a fortune. Its been like this for years.

And here's the point of my bringing this up-- There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the system at all. It needs new vacuum pumping units and Paul vents. I went through all the tunnels and the return vent piping along with everything else is perfectly intact. Every engineer that has gone through has determined that the entire system must be trashed and replaced, which in a complex like this is a mind boggling sum of money.

Just think- a couple of good books and articles on this subject could prevent this insanity. I gave them a full written report on the origins and theory of their systems and what is required to bring it back to spec. Maybe Dan's book will come in enough time for them to take my recommendations more seriously!
