Clean Up a Holohan's Act
Hi Wallies!
I'm Dan's daughter and I live in Washington, DC. My husband and I are renovating our bathroom and my dad suggested we get in touch with the Wallies to see if you all have any recommendations. Please help before my husband tries to renovate it himself in a fit of well-intentioned, but misguided newlywed home repair!
We live on the 9th floor of a condo building in NW. Our current bathroom is very blue (the tile, the floor, my mood after looking at it for four years). Most things in it were adjusted to the height of the really tall man who used to live here with his cat. Luckily, we are not very short, but to give you an idea of the height, I do not have to bend much to wash my face in the sink. (This was an actual "selling point" our real estate agent used.) It's fine for us, but it has alienated our shorter friends and their visits have dwindled. Our tall friends couldn't be happier, which is fine if we were starting a basketball team, but not if we're standing behind them at a concert. Help us become popular again with folks of all heights!
We're looking to have some tile work done on the floor and walls, replace our vanity with something that isn't NBA-height, and replace the lighting above the vanity with something classier than the energy-efficient lightbulb that is currently there. (Hey, I'm all for the environment, but I don't want to flaunt it.) The bathroom is 7.75ft x 4.8ft. Parking is not really an issue since we have a large lot out back and we live very close to the service elevator that will bring you to the loading dock. No DC parking headaches here! I'll even make you cookies!
Any contractors out there interested in this job? If so, please send me an email.
Thanks!
Erin

That's my girl.
She always makes me smile. Any local qualified pros listening? -
Thats what a great read Mrs Haskell
Have not read a post that good in along time.I'm setting, thinking, i need to get me a sink with that kind of height. Then the wife would not complain about me leaving whisker all over the place..she could not see them.
Mr Holohan i think its time for you to step aside.I see Mrs Haskell could take over nicely.
Thanks for the great laugh tonight. -
Thanks.
Erin is very involved in HeatingHelp.com right now. I couldn't run the place without her.
And she writes better than I do.
I hope she can find a local Wallie to take on her renovation. She'd rather give the business to a friend.
Thanks. -

Thanks...
for the kind words, gentlemen.
Don, let me know where to send the sink when I'm done with it. :)
Working with my dad has been a blast. I've especially enjoyed getting to know members of the HeatingHelp.com community. You all are great! And, as my dad said, I would love to give this business to a friend.
Thanks!

insist on
some floor warming mats in the upgrade.
There are some new and wild floor covering products, many with recycled components. I like some of the coverings with pieces of old glass cast into them.
Check out some of the archived issues of Fine Homebuilding for great ideas and pictures.

Design working height
The height of counters, basins etc should be set for you and your hubby. Guests come and go and hopefully don't live in the same home. You however have to live with those heights every day.
Every home I have either built or renovated we set the counter and sink heights for us. Even the wall ovens (with side hinged doors) were set into custom height cabinets. Minimal bending over hot doors to use the ovens. Same for microwave.
Lavs and sinks were set so that one could touch the bottom without bending. Counters likewise.
On one set of cabinets the cabinet maker designed an extra spacer to raise them. We said no, make the drawers deeper or add a drawer, we are not buying blank space.
The shorties can use a small stool. My 4 year old granddaughter manages very well with one and I don't have to do contortions to brush my teeth. -
Erin is still looking for a good D.C. pro.
Anyone here qualify? -
Get ahold of Dan Foley
If he can't do it, I sure he knows of someone reliable who can.
Phone: (703) 751-3288
MEIt's not so much a case of "You got what you paid for", as it is a matter of "You DIDN'T get what you DIDN'T pay for, and you're NOT going to get what you thought you were in the way of comfort". Borrowed from Heatboy. -
Will do.
No job too small doesn't apply to Dan. :-) -
Plumbing
Dan,
I am strictly mechanical. I don't do any plumbing. I do know lots of remodel plumbers who work in DC. Have Erin contact me and I will set her up. My contact info: 703-339-8030w, 703-926-9307c
