Burnham V8 Series Boiler

My plumber just found corrosion on the top of my boiler block. He told me to contact Burnham because they will cover this under warranty. I called them and they said that the water in the system caused this corrosion and the warranty does not apply. Can anyone help me figure this out? My boiler is only 5 years old. She told me I could get a discount on my new Burnham boiler, but I would never buy from this company again. Thanks in advance for any help or advice. Keven

but that probably does not matter much because I am not a professional and he is.

I do not see how Burnham can tell it is a water problem without inspecting the boiler. Did they inspect it? Did you send them a sample of boiler water for their examination (I do not know if they even would want that)? I would think Burnham would send out a qualified representative to look at the boiler before determining something like that.

Where are you located? If you're in the Baltimore area, I know the rep and he's one of the industry's best.

warranty

demand that a Burnham rep take a look. Sounds like possibly a push nipple leak between a section on top. Burnham has been plagued for years with leakers, and have been pretty good on standing behind the warranty. They do prefer to deal with a Burnham dealer, and may not want to act on the homeowner's findings alone. The boiler is only 5 years old, and a V8, so there shouldn't be a problem

Without info how could you possibly know/suspect that?
Leak "generalities" without input can create the longest HH thread known to man. ;-)

I would like to see some pictures of the install

I am thinking unstable water line but that is just a guess. Photos PLEASE.

Why Would Corrosion

Be a warranty issue unless the boiler block is leaking? Would be interested to see the condition of the chimmney, maintenace record and put a combustion analyzer on the boiler. Flue is at the top.

without pics, everyone is just guessing. I have replaced warranty Burnhams with push nipple leaks, as well as so called stress cracks a plenty. How many have you found and replaced?

Obviously,

not as many as you, in that I don`t have to start "guessing" about a well respected manufacturers casting process, then automatically assume  every leak is caused by this. :-)

Thanks for all you help. I have had it serviced twice in the past 4.5 years. The chimney is clean. The boiler was put in by a licensed Burnham dealer, but I was not happy with his job. I had a plumber come in and tell me he put the oil line in wrong and had to re do it. Anyway, I live in Rhode Island and I agree that a rep from Burnham should come out, I just wanted some advice from some experienced plumbers. Burnham told me the corrosion on top of the boiler is not covered. I just want to put together a good argument, with proof, before I call back. I have 3 pics, let me know if you need more. This is only an observation but it sure looks like the outline of the flue. Sure that chimmney isn't condensing?

But it almost looks like the flue pipe dips down to enter the chimney.  That would make it pretty tough for the water to roll down the inside of the brick and then wick into the stack pipe.   Does it look like it came from the inside out, or in between the two castings?

Hey - Burnham sent representative to test my boiler and they found that the corrosion was due to the high chloride level in my water. They offered to replace the block and all parts for free even though it was not in the warranty. It was nice to see a company that stands by their products. Keven O'Neil, North Kingstown, RI
