How not to save money

About 35 years ago i was at my sisters house and she asked me to check on the boilers water level in the basement. She lived in the second floor of a 3 family house at that time.

As soon as I went into the back hall I could smell something overheating. When I got to the basement I found the third floor tenant had run a GARDEN HOSE from where the gas meter used to be into the front of the boiler for his apartment next to the pilot light.

I turned off the gas, told my sister and her downstairs neighbor to get out of the house and called the fire department. In very short order the fire department, the gas company and the police were at the house. It turns out his gas was turned off because he didn't pay the bill. When he got home he was cited by the FD; he argued it wasn't a safety concern because he only had the gas shutoff valve half on! The landlord (who lived across the street) told him to find someplace else to live.

It's just dumb luck that the house didn't burn down. People do stupid things all the time but this takes the cake!
