A Special Intrepid/EZ-Gas Steamer
for us, that is. This is the house where Gordo and I first met, some ten years ago give or take. I was installing Gorton #2 vents on the steam mains by drilling and tapping them, as seen in the third pic, and Gordo was fixing a faucet. Little did we know................
This Burnham 406 was there then- it was there when the current owners bought the place 15 years ago. Typical mis-configured copper piping. We discovered during the work that there were several leaky radiator valve packing nuts- that's probably what caused the boiler to fail. The plugged steel pigtail didn't help- I'm sure if the pressure got too high it would have made the leaks worse.
The sealer around the flue collector had loosened and was turning to dust, and we see the usual hole above the waterline. Somehow that pic was underexposed. Yes, it was on the end where the return line was connected.
Also, the staining on the inside of the base shows how bad the leak was.Steam, Vapor & Hot-Water Heating

We brought this system into the 21st Century
with a Slant/Fin Intrepid and Carlin EZ-Gas. The optional acoustic cover makes it a lot quieter. The VXT will help keep an eye on the water consumption- yes, we did test the lockout function. And you know they're getting better steam now!Steam, Vapor & Hot-Water Heating

A well installed boiler is a thing of beauty. Thanks for posting!Dave in Quad Cities, America

The Artists in the Basement.....
You make me jealous. I still can't get the local reps to stock steamers here in Chicago. Also, here in the world of atmospherics, the noise from a power burner usually jsut doesn't cut it....even in big boilers.
Just one thing I wonder about...is the extra electrical consumption of the burner more than made up by the savings in fuel? The Steam Whisperer (Formerly Boilerpro)

It's a pretty small motor
1/15th HP, 1.25 amp PSC. This is smaller than an oil burner motor, since it doesn't have to run a pump. But our Carlin rep tells us a PSC oil-burner motor can be used in a pinch, though we stock the proper one.
There is still enough oil around here that most people know what an oil burner sounds like. These last few Intrepid/EZ-Gas jobs are noticeably quieter- certainly no louder than the oil burner in my house.Steam, Vapor & Hot-Water Heating

Acoustical Cover
Steamhead:
What is the part number (or where can I get one) for the acoustical cover for the burner? My house sounds like it is taking flight whenever our burner comes on.
Thanks.

There are three parts-
the cover itself, a longer orifice nipple that the gas valve mounts on, and a replacement air tube with the cover mounting flange welded onto it.
What boiler is your EZ-Gas used on? What length is the air tube and what diffuser does it have?Steam, Vapor & Hot-Water Heating
