    A Beautiful Burnham Install by Gerry Gill & Co.

    A while back I started a thread on the subject of atmospheric boilers and the problems that most of them have, of rotting out at the water line if the water conditions are poor.

    In that thread, there we comparisons made of different patterns of pinning on the sections and the fact that HB Smith's commercial atmospheric model was designed with no pinning above the water line.  Shortly after the date of the post, it appears the Smith dropped that model from production.

    On my recent visit to Gerry Gill's website, where I often go to look and enjoy his beautiful steamer installations, I found a new install of a Burnham 5 Series boiler.  Here is a link to that part of his website, http://www.gwgillplumbingandheating.com/webapp/GetPage?pid=624&thumbpage=1

    Gerry, I was wondering of you would care to comment about this beautiful installation. 
    What happened to the previous boiler?
    What were the factors that you looked at in installing this model?
    Have you installed many of this model?
    How would you rate this boiler in terms of reliability?
    It looks like you have it set up for 2 stage firing.  Is that for precise pressure control since it is installed on a Mouat system? 

    Again, I have to say this was a beautiful installation!

    Weil-McLain 680 with Riello 2-stage burner, December 2012. Firing rate=375MBH Low, 690MBH Hi.
    System = Early Dunham 2-pipe Vacuo-Vapor (inlet and outlet both at bottom of radiators) Traps are Dunham #2 rebuilt w. Barnes-Jones Cage Units, Dunham-Bush 1E, Mepco 1E, and Armstrong TS-2. All valves haveTunstall orifices sized at 8 oz.
    Current connected load EDR= 1,259 sq ft, Original system EDR = 2,100 sq ft Vaporstat, 13 oz cutout, 4 oz cutin - Temp. control Tekmar 279.

    The pevious boiler had taken on seriously high amounts of feed water for many years due to a leak that took me about 6 months to find..when found, the homeowners are now aware of a room that was bricked off from the rest of the basement..was rather interesting, tho i did my job and did not do any digging in the dirt floor as i figured if someone was buried there i'd leave them alone..anyways , the homeowners have the means to say replace the boiler now so it doesn't leak on a cold winters night..lets put it this way, the old boilers piping had rotted off the side of the boiler due to makeup water..weve only installed a couple series 5 boilers but like them alot..always seem to be special order..never in stock..and yes the low fire is because it is a vapor system designed for 3 ounces max pressure.

    Efficiency

    Gerry,
    I was wondering if you put the combustion analyzer on it after you had it fired up, and if so, how did it check out.  I think the ratings say 80% combustion efficiency.  In particular, I was wondering how it tested on low fire.
