oil equalizer??
hey everyone. today i found a case grounded 7.5 ton 3 phase compressor for a 15 ton york split system. i will be sent by my boss to replace it tommorrow. the question i have is that there is a 3/8" copper line going from one compressor to the other . the line is located near the bottom of each compressor. from my brief 6 year experience i think it is a oil equalizer line?? to ensure equal amount of oil between the 2 compressors?? my question is what do i do when i cut the line, do i catch the oil in a pan and reuse it??? or do i let it come out??, and when i recharge the system oil will come from the refrigerant?

Possibly,but I doubt it, due simply to the small size of the line.There is more to "oil equalizing" than just a common connecting pipe. If the oil is not burnt reuse it ,if burnt ,replace it.If it is an equalizer and the oil has been compromised then you will have to install filter/driers/acid neutralizer's in both compressors lines.

ok..thanks...is there a special tool to put oil back in or do i just catch it in a pan and pour it back in the compressor??

Something like these. The combination pump is fine for most smaller stuff. The barrel slide down into the oil container and then you pump it in through a regular 1/4" charging hose. I have two hoses that I use for this purpose only. 1 for Mineral and Alky and 1 for POE.
The deluxe pump just sits at the shop unless we are doing a chiller or a really large RTU (40-60 ton and up)
