    Well, at least

you can replace the relays and transformer in that box- not always true with newer ones.

What is it used for- zone valves?

    That's exactly

Frank: Those relays control pumps in a 5-unit apartment building.

When I first saw this, I wanted to sell the owners a more modern pump controller, but after thinking about it, I don't believe it would be in their best interests since those relays and transformer are probably original equipment.  The pumps are all original Grundfos as well.

Yes, those relays turn on the burner.
