I feel like the plumber...........
that Shelby described:)Almost ............Got home from work last night and typed up a fax for some materials in the AM.Kept my ledger to date and dinner was smelling good.So I carried my boots(boots off,day is done)down the cellar stairs.I remebered to grab some all-thread for the next day.So I walk around the corner.........there's the puddle!!!!Coming from my 16 year old Super-Stor.NO not now!Never a good time for a leak eh.
Looking closer the water was dripping from the emersion well for the aquastat.Not the joint but from inside the well itself.The last thing I wanted to do was to fix something at home.My mind was racing and wanting the easy fix!I remebered the epoxy stuff I got from counter days at the supply house several years ago.The stuff Hercules makes.Yeah!So I shut the tank off and bled it down some.I ripped off a hunk and kneaded it together and jammed it in the emersion well and neatly packed it around the cappilary.I felt good and figured I would eat and put us back on line.
So I ate and almost forgot the repair.I grabbed the flashlight and as I rounded the corner water was pissing across the room from the putty!!!Man I thought.....out to the truck for some tools and parts.Of course the well I had was not deep enough...........which I found out as I changed it on the fly:)Oh yeah the bi metal capillary wire snapped when I tried to pull the 4006 aquastat out:)So I screw the old well in finger tight and search for a brass nipple and brass coupling.
Finnaly all the parts are in front of me and the operation a success.The only missing player was a new aquastat:)So my limit control became a toggle for the evening and AM showers:)Manned by yours truely.I must admit though........if the epxoy held........hmmmmmmm.

quick repair
Why is it the plumbers house is always the last to be repaired , I once had my wife call me and booked a service call to get the kitchen sink unpluged ,saying that if its not done by 4 she will call the worst guy i know at overtime to fix the problem made it home by 5:30 to bad for me ( she has a great sense of hummor and strung me along for another hour for being late ) She didnt call anyone HA HA

OH MY!
I checked out that link Murph...these DIYers doing A/C and Furnaces scare the living s**t out of me... I especially ike the guy who installed his ac in 30 minutes...YIKES. soft solder no doubt and no evacuation..just solder and let the refrigerant go...my God!
I can't believe this is legal..humidifiers and stats I got no problem with, but when something takes a major amount of schooling and can kill..should be left to the experts.

the guy who complains that his local contractor took 5 days to answer a question he had after his DIY installation?
Talk about big brass ones.

I can sympathize
I work commercial and have no interest in doing my own "little stuff" at home. I have a good friend that does NOTHING BUT residential. I hire him to clean and service my furnace, replace my HWT. It has become somewhat of a joke amongst my peers locally BUT .... if you can't laugh at your own idiosyncrasies, its gonna be a dull life!

Home projects
1) Three years into the radiant staple up for the first floor. Ive got four bays done.
2) One year old gas stove that sits in my shop that I am to replace my old electric with.
3) Recirc line from third floor bath that took me two years to renovate.
4) Old soapstone sink out in the garage that is supposed to be sitting between the W/D in the basement.
Man, I am tired just reading my own post.....
At least I'll have the second floor bathroom renovated before summer. We start as soon as I get back from Baltimore. Yea .. Yea thats it, as soon as I get back.

I have a brand new heating system for my home consisting of a Vitola, Vitocell 300, Vitotronic 200 and radiant. Problem is, it is still sitting in my garage. The coldest, longest Winter I can remember and I'm still running the beast because I can't find the time. Anyone work for beer?

HB, you're on to something. Seems like we could start our own reality TV show - "Weekend Warriors" & put the folks at TOH to shame. A traveling wethead band of husbands who can't find the time to do their own work get together and "hit" one home on a given weekend to perform all that's gone begging. We need a beer sponsor!

It's too bad that there is
no equivilant to Barn Raising in the Plumbing & Heating trade. Imagine a gang of friendly professionals that now and then take a day to help each other out with installing the new stuff that sits in the garage. So for food and beer and good company, a group of like minded people descend on a fellow in the trade and get the whole job done in a very short time. Imagine the publicity, you may even get on TV as well as in the trade pubs.
The spouses would leap for joy, there would be room in the garage/shop again, the fuel bills would go down, the comfort level would go up and everyone would have a great visit.
By the way, my address is...., oh wait, I am not an official plumbing/heating guy. Never mind.

Hey I know how you feel. Before I got into the manifold trade I worked in the automotive area. Driving home one night after a long day of skinned knuckles and grease up to the elbows, Alt decides to go south. Off goes the radio, heater and everything else that isn't required. Limp the truck home and the last thing I wanted to do was work on it. In the house you go to clean up and have a bite to eat. Warm, comfortable, and on a full stomach the last thing I wanted to do was go back out there. Then you start thinking. It will be light out tomorrow, I'll fix it then. Out comes the battery charger and followed by a relaxing evening in front of the TV. I figure thats what weekends are for. After work who wants to do the same thing that they did all day long. But Mike, at least you fixed the problem in the end. That isnt even close to what Jeff did with my hot water tank. He never attempted to fix the problem later. Just left the expandable foam there to keep it from leaking.

I'll confess....
I've had a "replacement" toilet sitting in my storage for 2 months now. My Mom has asked me to look into a couple things for the parental units, unit, and I don't even know what time it is !
As we all find, the "cobblers kids have no shoes" is more common than we ever thought.(see: your parents WERE right!) Don't know about most of you , but the last thing I want to do when I get home is to fix something. I hear ya Cheese,things will hold for just a while longer.... we hope. Chris

Home Repairs
After handwashing dishes for months because "I'm sure the leak under the dishwasher is a seal." , I repaired the
cracked drain hose with a razor knife and screwdriver in less than ten minutes one day. Right at the connection, I cut off less than an inch. Imagine the glares from the wife and kids.
BTW, ever notice open switch boxes and lights hanging from wires in an electrician's house...of course.

Ah, just another
memory.
My wife had a small bucket under her lav faucet for two years. One day I was home for lunch with my apprentice just as she was emptying the pail.
She wouldn't let us leave until John had replaced the faucet. It took him 10 minutes.
