    oh my

After the entire post on a homeowner install I had the luck to go to one today. I was actually impressed with the appearance. Very neat and straight. Then I found everything else!! The customer had put the pump on the return, but having heard pump away, he reversed the pump. I then found the coil mixing valve 6" directly over the top of the coil. He only saw where it said 6 to 8 inch's. Not the mention of "below the coil". If that wasn't enough, he antifreezed the system, with how much, he doesn't know, and never installed a backflow preventor. You could smell the antifreeze in the tub. And if that wasn't bad enough, the chamber had collapsed do to the fact when he fired the unit he closed the air band's because it made it quieter!! The unit was plugged very nicely....oh my....I have a headache...

Don't know if you should be p*&ed or just laugh at the stupidity. Well at least he didn't just throw out the instructions.

it is a sad state of affairs

that puts homeowners in this terrible position. With the economy the way it is and people with just enough knowledge to be dangerous trying to save some money, this is not going to stop any time soon. Quite frankly, I don't see any good solution but to continue to try to convince homeowners that there really are some things that they just should not try to do. Saving a buck is just a natural inclination for a lot of people, myself included, but, I have to wonder how many folks do this stuff that don't come to the Wall??? Are they hopefully lucky, or are they the ones we sometimes read about in the "CO again" thread? When you have the opportunity to correct some of these really bad situations, I hope you can feel some satisfaction for what you have accomplished, and possibly prevented. Larry
