Stan. Turn the boiler off. call for some help.
what is the pressure reading at 270F ? do you have any experience with electrical wiring ? changing a receptacale or light switch or three way ...? i dont do this often buh you e-mail me i give you my phone number. call me .

Turn it off
even if the gauge ends up being wrong turn the boiler off and call your service company. Best wishes J.Lockard

you have pressure and heat energy there that is trying to release, it will level your house and may kill you, turn it off at the breaker and call a professional ASAP

I agree with you that a boiler that runs up to 270 is dangerous. However, if the pressure drops to saturation pressure for the given temperature, the system will not all flash to steam. A little steam will form, which will cause pressure to rise a little. There will be no sudden increase in pressure. If heat continues to be added, then as you know, pressure will continue to rise until the side or top of the boiler comes off. Then you have a mess. A lot of people have the misconception that the whole system will flash to steam, but I was surprised to hear this coming from you.

If the gauge is right (doubtful), my rough estimate is it will flash to steam if the pressure were to drop below about 27 PSI anywhere in the system at any time. Were this to happen, it is likely that you would be missing at least a couple walls.
This is deadly serious, TURN IT OFF NOW! Then call a tech and see what's up. Most likely a broken gauge, but it's not worth your life or your house to bet against it.

what is the actual pipe temperature on the boiler.....read it while the pump is running......it could just be a case of a temperature guage that is inacurate.......or it could be a grossly inacurate aquastat. of course if the aquastat is set for 240 then its not that far off, just lower it to 180. if the only problem you are experiencing is the temp on your guage is too high then i'd just check the guage reliability. 270 degree water could easily cause other signs of commotion in your boiler....
