Van BC?

@ April 7, 2009 7:13 AM in solutions for cleaning Vitodens inner coil (Leo G)

then phone DB Perks in north Van and ask for citrisurf. I would take out the complete exchanger and soak it in a poly tub for a day or two. DB is a pool equipment supplier and the citrisurf is approved by Viessmann.

Last year- just before the big shave for charity.

@ April 1, 2009 8:04 PM in Lights out for \"Earth Hour\"

should this test be coordinated via time zones etc - I think the effort and the results would be spectacular. Here in northern Alberta we are already enjoying 13+ hours of sunlight - so really the lights were still off during the first part of the light outs period.

yep -

@ March 29, 2009 12:08 PM in Lights out for \"Earth Hour\"

Canada does qualify as foreign oil - we might be a friendly nation sharing a common border - but it is a border. NAFTA not withstanding of course.

here in Alberta

@ March 28, 2009 11:02 PM in Lights out for \"Earth Hour\"

at 7:30 we were generating (using) 7300 Mw province wide, at 8:30 - 7500; and now at 9 PM its back to 7400 with imports from other provinces at 506 Mw. http://ets.aeso.ca/ets_web/ip/Market/Reports/CSDReportServlet got to keep those crude oil refineries going to send more crude south! :-) Alberta exports more oil south than does Saudi Arabia.

thanks

@ March 21, 2009 9:29 AM in academic question

that is exactly what I needed.

steam boilers

@ March 19, 2009 7:17 PM in academic question

the questions is this: installing two steamers (<2 psi) side by side to a common main, they are physically dissimilar and of unequal firing rate. Are there any installation requirements (code, otj experiences etc) that dictate? Maintain the 24 inches from nowl to header etc? Use drop headers? thanks

too much beer??

@ March 8, 2009 7:24 PM in Foothills Conference

in Canada eh??? damn near impossible - there must be more to the story!!

all are invited

@ March 7, 2009 8:04 PM in Foothills Conference

On the negative side this conference is biannual - and the bright side - its this year. http://www.hydronicsalberta.com/foothills/index.htm I would love to say I will see you there - but will probably be in Vancouver at the UA Western Canada Apprenticeship competitions.

bricks?

@ February 26, 2009 1:35 AM in Thanks for your help! (Dan H.)

sent a few with my last order. thanks for all that you do Dan.

of course its doable

@ February 19, 2009 12:20 AM in Condensing boiler with baseboard

but not at current 180 standards. Set your maximum delivery temp to 160 deg F. Add more radiation - look at the specs and temp/output numbers published by each rad/convector manufacturer based on the 160 number - adjust linear feet of rads to those numbers. I must add - that a reliable heat loss calc will give you numbers that are meaningful and useful - design the system around that standard and go from there. once there - add more radiation. The trick to condensing is to get the heat to your comfort space. It is the only time that I would oversize anything! The radiation that is - not the boiler. Get the heat out!

wow Tim!

@ February 10, 2009 8:43 PM in OT - Large Nat. Gas Pipe Question

our code specifies "qualified' but then makes no reference to what that really means. Have a look at CSA B 149.1 and 149.3. (is this your method of following your doctors instructions???? take it easy will you)

@ February 7, 2009 10:37 PM in how many will come forward and admit?

been lurking or chatting since 98 or so. this stuff is addictive, love the knowledge and the occasional spat.

yes Brad -

@ January 17, 2009 8:45 PM in Milinch

I have all the tables - and they are still published by the UA. Surprisingly - they are part of a steamfitter/pipefitter cirriculum here in Alberta. Interesting method of friction loss. :-) And yes I still have a bamboo core slide rule -

Is it -

@ January 17, 2009 11:08 AM in Milinch

still a valid method of calculating circulators and pipe sizing?

lets see -

@ January 11, 2009 7:30 AM in Dogs & Service calls

I have been bitten, clawed, dive bombed by the attack budgie, greeted warmly at the door but then not allowed to leave (by the 2 shephards), my boots and tools have been peed on by both dogs and cats, the service van ransacked by calf (nice little hereford that really missed its mother!), surrounded by a herd of insane wild turkeys (now that's a really messy bird) - but the worst day was when "george" slithered out from behind the boiler. George was a 6 foot boa - owner calmly said - "oh we knew he would come out when he got hungry". Stick to commercial/industrial - I'll take on a nice day of industrial waste anytime.

I agree -

@ January 2, 2009 8:12 AM in how to set curve on Viessmann

if the slope indicated in the manual to your expected DD is correct - lower may be the route you need. Ultimately it is your comfort that will dictate the final numbers. Another method I use to fine tune a system, regardless of heat emitters, is to use negative shift. It's a quick method of curve adjustment that is easily adjusted.

@ January 1, 2009 9:47 AM in High Altitude Draft Issues

draft at that altitude with the winds mentioned can be a bit of a bugger to track down. even the slightest breeze can counteract the drafting of your heating plant. I ran into this issue a few years ago in the arctic - darn boiler would work fine until wind picked up. To solve this we used a gizmo on top of the chimney - it would swivel with the wind direction and always kept the flue outlet on the lee side. something to consider. On the down side I do not recall the name of the product. Once the down drafting is minimized you can work on the other issues you mentioned.

you are in the right place -

@ January 1, 2009 9:33 AM in how to set curve on Viessmann

but could you add a bit of info? current settings, type of system, Boiler model etc, even location is helpful.

or on the other side

"I have reset it 70 or 80 times - and it still won't light" Now that was an interesting service call.

@ December 24, 2008 8:21 PM in A hearty 'Thank You'!

Merry Christmas to all the brothers and sisters we all hold so dear - the camaraderie on this site is outstanding!

while your issue

@ December 1, 2008 7:59 AM in Effikal Damper Lifespan

seems separate than this notice - I would still check with your supplier/gas inspection agency for clarification. It seems that this notice is very regional in application.
