Fascinating thread Mark

@ December 19, 2008 3:03 PM in Sucky Mod Con Efficiency.... (ME)

I would like to know a couple of things Mark. When was the unit last serviced? How did you measure Thermal Efficiency? Did you measure Combustion Efficiency? What was it? Paul

Great looking work

@ November 29, 2008 6:21 PM in GB install photos ( s milne )

and I really like the attention to detail on the electrical. Do you treat your condensate or does it just go down the drain? Paul

Good Question

@ November 20, 2008 5:31 AM in ray vs triangle tube vs knight boiler

Pricing is usually not the lone indicator of quality, so if the contractors pricing is an "apples-to-apples" comparison, why not ask to look at their "apples". Does each contractor have a portfolio of their work with references? Are they factory trained? Does their service tech and/or distributor carry parts if down the road some component fails? Start asking pointed questions about their workmanship and the good, better, best contractors really start to shine. What trainings or certifications does the shop or installers have? Do they provide system documentation (although not all contractors do) for the system they design and install? Spend some time with each contractor. Each of the boilers are reputable (I prefer the Knight Boiler) so you are to be commended in trying to assess which contractor is best suited for your project. Good luck. Paul

Yes,

@ November 18, 2008 9:43 PM in Tekmar 071 with the 507?

All of these are 10K NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) sensors. At 77F, they register 10,000 ohms resistance. Snowmelt sensors (090) are different just for the record. I sent you a PDF to your email of the SR503 wiring diagram. There is a newer sensor available that is for "In-wall" applications that blends fairly nicely. It is a number 084 sensor. Check it out at this link http://www.tekmarcontrols.com/literature/acrobat/d084.pdf Paul

I would recommend a separate and clean 24V power source. Paul

Great looking work Scott. Very nice, someone took some time to make the venting look nice and clean. lettering all straight and uniform. I especially like the clean looking electrical and clear labeling of fosta pex lines. Paul There is a "Hydronic Karaoke" thread lurking below here and it has your name all over it. Pace yourself

.....In late breaking news, and what only be described as a very bizzare crime, Roger Daltrie and crew were arrested after breaking into a local kennel and freeing several animals. Later officials stated that it was "The Who" who let the dogs out....... Pablo(Whose Line is it Anyway) Rohrs

@ October 18, 2008 7:55 AM in \"But you were more money\".........heatboy

Was the 4-way added at the same time as the mixing blocks? It seems like it is unecessary in that the mixing blocks with VSIM each have boiler minimum features that will protect the boiler. I would cut out the 4-way and re-pipe the mixing blocks directly as secondary loops, and re-establish the primary loop pump engaging anytime a call for heat exists. Paul

Issues?

@ October 18, 2008 7:34 AM in job photos #4 ( s milne)

In some of these really old homes, maybe some have old knob-and-tube wiring, do you ever have grounding issues that wreak havoc on proving ground at the rectification probe? I am starting a commercial job next week in a really old building and I am spending about $13.00 on a grounding rod and a 1/2 hour of my time to make sure I have good earth ground. Paul

Man, you have been installing a lot of boilers lately. The economy has been good to you in your region. How 'bout a picture of one of your Knight installs you were telling me about? Kudo's to your crew. Paul

I have used quite a few

Peerless Purefire Boiler

@ September 20, 2008 11:26 AM in \"Your Nagging Wife\" Advertising

I am down with a cold today so I am catching up on some reading. Some of the recently released trade publiciations are featuring this ad for the new Peerless Purefire boiler. I was laughing out loud on this one and my wife thinks it is a marketing disaster. How many single moms or responsible wives out there making the decisions for boiler replacements? Paul

It was set up properly with a combustion analyzer and other than replacing the target wall, it still has all of it's original components. MJ was at the helm of the this boiler cleaning even after flushing the trap there was some really fine sediment. Paul

My rep

@ August 26, 2008 8:59 PM in \"Pure-Fire\" by Peerless

told me about them. I have heard they are not in production yet. Peerless moves really slow when releasing a new product. It looks like the 1st release will feature a 3:1 turndown ratio but a 5:1 will be available as well. 200 equivalent feet in total combined venting which can be CPVC, PVC, or Polypropylene. It looks like they went with a "Sealed Cabinet" but still use the cabinet as a plenum for fresh air intake. My rep said Peerless' thinking was wanting air-born particulates to have a chance to drop out before being ingested into the venturi. I'm still sold on Lochinvar Knights. This boiler is a real late comer to the modcon market so it will be interesting to see what happens in the market. My rep said price point is at the same level as their current offerings but has not yet released pricing yet to his distributors. Paul

Stencils

@ August 25, 2008 11:31 AM in Visio or SmartDraw????

Unsure about Visio stencils ability to be imported into the Smartdraw software. It depends what format they accept I supposed. I can import any JPEG and insert it into Visio for application specific components or even converting it into a stencil. Very adaptable. Paul

Speedy recovery Alan.
