@ January 15, 2012 7:45 PM in ruud gas furnace board wont power up
i had a ruud gas furnace where power light wont come on at the mother board. i replaced stepdown transformer as stated in guide. worked 1 day and went off again. i was getting 120 volts out of board going to primary side of transformer.but i put another transformer on and still wouldnt make 24 volts going out to feed board. could there be a bad board or nuetrul problem in board? power good into primary of board also. i am almost thinking maybe there is a electrical problem going to furnace because after awhile it just started working properly again out of nowhere. i even put the hot into the power wire from the switch directly to the hot side of the transformer and left nuetral hooked up to the board and recorded 120 volts and wouldnt power up and after shutting off power playing with this thing for a long time it started up again! i dont know what to d. should i replace the board or have the circuit looked at by a electrician first where this is so intermittent.it ran many cycles no trouble but i know its not solved. i am atech and i cant put my hands on this and i dont want to replace the board unless i am sure. any help please it is a ruud model ugra-09ezajs serial eh5d707f390119502highboy

hi boy furnacesreturn duct into back of furnaces
@ December 11, 2011 9:41 AM in return duct into back of furnaces
i have seen a few warm air furnaces where they didnt come into the left or right side of furnace for return air duct connection, instead they cut a hole in rear of furnace. every manual i have looked at the manufacturer says a big no to this. i am curious if anybody knows why and what it does or doesnt do to the furnace life or operation.gas furnace in attic with blown in foam

some attics in mass. now have blown in foam insulation from soffits to ceiling. mass. save has been running rebates for customers to do this work. my question is if there is a gas furnace in attic is there now eneough air for combustion it there is ne vents open for air infiltration. is it ok if attic is big eneough in cubic feet for btu of furnace or does something else have to be done for combustion air.gas furnace in attic with blown in foam

@ December 7, 2011 6:55 PM in outside oil tanks
when it gets real cold out the outside oil tanks pop up with problems. i know that every one has alot of different solutions but i have found in mass. that it seems like the ones that are always no trouble are the ones that are in wood enclosures. i know thats what i have been surveying. anybody finding this true?osv in mass.
@ December 7, 2011 6:08 PM in osv in mass.
i have seen osv valve on several outside tanks in wood shed enclosures. the state says not to put them on where there is freezing. these rooms dont seem to have any problems with freezing oil lines etc. webster says they can go in temps. of 32 degrees and webster says 0 degree. i dont use the valve in these situations but i am curious about the application. i am a tech. thx for any commments.he input

would it be crazy to replace a he on a 15 yr. old. goodman furnace. it is under WARRANTEE but the rest of the machine is filled with 15 yr. old parts.and it has to be pulled out of crawl area and then re installed.then the responceability after you work on it. i want to give the customer prices on new furnace but they know its under warrantee. thx for any advice.counterflow
@ December 2, 2011 8:12 PM in autofeeder on counter flow
thx for replies,i would imagine uf the boiler was to big for radiation it would do this also?? i feel its sized right, just a question. it sounds like this is very different from other piping lay outs. thx again guys.do you guys approve of auto feeders on steam or stay away.autofeeder on counter flow
@ December 1, 2011 7:39 PM in autofeeder on counter flow
installed a weil mlain 4 sec.steamboiler replacement on a very old steam counter flow piping system. never had auto feed on system.old lady wanted one installed. i am not a fan of them anyway. but even after adding extra delay timing relay it still over filled boiler. i skimmed and flushed new boiler alot. is this counter flow just trouble for a feeder??the condensate seems to take its sweet time returning to the boiler. no wet returns to speak of other than the small section at rear of boiler which is clean.this seems to be a weird piping desighn as the main pipe pitches back towards the boiler and steam and condensate travel in this piping.ran out of patience and they are hand filling it now.any insights appreciated.altering
@ December 1, 2011 6:53 PM in permit for fluepipe replacement
is the flue pipe replacement considered altering the oil burner?? well at least i told the fire dept. i was filing the permit for the new oil line i installed not the flue pipe. he can look at it all he wants but its pitched right protected with fire shielding where its close to wood and he should appreciate the effort, because for 20 yrs since home was built the pipe was kissing wood walls!! and was inspected!!relax
@ November 24, 2011 4:31 PM in tripping rollout switch
hey empire maybe i was to short on my question. i had a customer call me about a goodman gas furnace that tripped the rollout switch couple of times. i told him to leave it off until i check it out. i have done a good amount of gas service but i have only seen this once before. usually bad ignitors, boards. sensors pressure switches etc i was just asking if this meant heat exchanger might be bad. i didnt do anything unsafe ok. it was a phone call only from this homeowner.i will call goodman on this situation.i think it really got twisted. you really jumped to alot of diffrent assumptions like i did something wrong. i will be very careful if i ask any more questions on this site.i just asked a question in general.you felt so strong that i did something wrong with what i said.i really think i did not go into detail to get a informitive reply, but maybe what do you mean paul gives us more detail would be more polite than jumping on someone. again i did not touch this unit at all. it was just a general question why would this rollout swich trip, thats it!flue pipe

has anybody heard of a firedept. that wants a permit pulled in mass.when you are replacing fluepipe on exsisting furnace,i had a customer say to me that when i am replacing their smoke pipe the fireman who came to the home for something else said i am suppose to file a permit just like for a new oil line upgrade or furnace replacement, i am a contractor and never did this for any jobs before.adams furnace
@ November 9, 2011 5:34 PM in adams oil furnace
hey thx jim for your reply. not a ton of trouble with this unit. had trouble after first putting it in with combustion issues. readjusted burner went all winter no calls. tuneup this year, no problems ran clean all season. i have single pipe gravity, new oil line, garber at tank, adams filter at burner. solid nozzle on nx burner. i read instuctions and set it up with co2 and smoke test only. what do you mean about c0 reading? the tech. support was lousy and i felt all alone on this experimental journey for me.after tuneup they said they smelt oil on first start up after servicing it. i guess i am a little nervous with this unit where it is different then othe types of oil furnaces. sounds like you know about them. if you could give me some set up advice that would be great. with other new equipment i have always relied on good tech support until you can get the hang of it. i always seem to get bad advice and the run around at adams tech. support that gets me real nervous. i am self employed with 30 years in buisness. thx pauladams oil furnace
@ November 8, 2011 5:59 PM in adams oil furnace
i put in one adams furnace with a nx burner 2 years ago. it has been so so, not alot of trouble to speak of but the tech. support stinks. no area reps. and i wish i had not put it in at all. some burner problems with smell on starts, but no major issues yet. i wont be putting another one in for sure and i dont feel comfortable with it at all.i should have done some better research before installing this unit. it seemed like a good idea with the high effiency and no chimney. have not heard any good things about it since. any feed back would be appreciated. is kerr condensing oil furnace any better or just stay away from condensing oil units.heat exchanger testing
@ November 3, 2011 5:48 PM in heat exchanger testing
are than some good methods of checking heat exchangers.i have always used the draft gauge over the fire thru test hole and when blower comes on it would affect the gauge reading.i have found alot of leaks this way which i was taught a long time ago.but i had one the other day and it was showing no change but could detect oil odor thru vents. i pulled off back panel of furnace and found a good size hole in front of fire box. i know about candles but wanted to see what other techs. have had success with. thankselectronic ignitors
@ October 22, 2011 5:32 PM in electronic ignitors
has anyone found a decent brand electronic ignitor. i have gone back to iron core for replacements because of short life. are there any good way of testing these other than ignitor tool for strength of spark.
