@ September 2, 2013 1:36 PM in copper fill and vent pipes

check  NFPA #31...see what they say...

boiler...

@ September 2, 2013 12:53 PM in Searching for Oil Boiler

hi,  i am in maine...am a retired  master  heat tech...it gets cold here...i think the  system  2000   would  work  nicely for your heat, & domestic  h.w. needs.../  have installed   & serviced many of them...nice  units.../    as i said...i'm retired, not looking for work...

coil flushing

@ August 3, 2013 9:04 PM in Backwashing domestic tankless coil

many years ago, i acid  washed / flushed   many coils....success rate was  about  30 %....i would not try today  because of  possible  health issues if  acid not fully flushed out....  replace the coil, or take to a radiator shop, & have them soak it in a cleaning tank for at least  4  to 6 hours....../    my  $.05    opinion...

oil tank

@ August 3, 2013 4:10 PM in oil tank distance/location to burner

i would not  partially bury  oil tank, as  you  would not  have visual  proof of  leakage...if it occured...

crown,new yorker...etc...

@ December 10, 2012 12:29 AM in crown,new yorker,slant finn

like  crown...have put  in  quite a few...customers  happy....good boiler for the money...

sludge..

@ December 10, 2012 12:08 AM in Reoccuring Sludge problems

at regular tune-up, and  if  no heat call =plugged  filter, strainer etc...i always add sid's  STR -2 +    .......have tried  most everything  for treatments...this  one is  only  one i will use now.../  been   doing this work since  mid 70's .....been lic. as master since  early 80's...also  stationary  engineer.. for  heavy oil...big  boilers...

gas....

@ May 6, 2012 12:31 AM in I need some opinions

in the  wonderful state of Maine....we need  licenses  for   propane  & nat gas...also  elact.....plumbing...oil...etc.../    state needs  their  nickles  & dimes...

air / water pressure ??

@ April 19, 2012 9:27 PM in baseboard heating - hearing water sloshing around

system  pressure  when cold & full should be  15 psi minimum....when hot  higher...maybe  as much  as   24 psi...//   1156...extrol tank...& gauge  should  all be changed  with relief  valve...//   that  eliminates   "free"   call backs   two..or 3 days  after  relief  changed...

boiler mate

@ March 4, 2012 3:26 PM in New Amtrol Boiler Mate running out of hot water

gentlemen,  please check  your code books.....if  this old guys memory  not  too  tired,   {  my  books are in office,  &  i  am  not  going there  right now  }    required  to  put  anti-scald rated  mixing  /  tempering  valve  at  outlet  of   indirect.../    then  you can   run  indirect  at higher  temp.   &  supply   larger volume than  tank   capacity.../   agree  with  Al   C.   /    just not  saying  the  temp i set  for  tank...

bryan boiler

@ February 27, 2012 12:17 PM in Bryan Boiler

suggest  you may have leak in  diaphragm  in feeder /   start with  replacing  feeder,   see if that  takes care of problem /   they are  fairly  short   money...

system 2000

@ February 14, 2012 11:54 PM in System 2000 or Buderus?

i will 2nd.   the  new jersey made  system  2000...have  installed  & serviced  many over the years...very  economical....very efficient..BUT  get some one to do a heat loss,  &  have old chimney lined,   will be much better  & also  code  issue in  Maine if  present chimney  not in really good shape...//  if  "home inspector"   looked at chimney,    have a  chimney mason   inspect it ... PLEASE  for your own safety, as  most  "home inspectors"  do not  really do  very  thorough  job,  just my   $.02   worth...the   person  that inspected  my house  30 years ago  knew less than  me,  & my  knowledge  was  only  heat...&   plumbing....

test holes

@ February 14, 2012 11:35 PM in Test Holes

i do not know where you are,  but in Maine  it is  now a code issue that  you must do an efficiency test,  & leave  a copy on site.

firematic valves

@ August 23, 2011 6:42 PM in Firomatic Fusible Oil Valves

in  Maine,  we  follow   NFPA  #31    closely... //    thermal  electric    firematic  above  burner   ///     firematic    oil   valves  at  the   oil tank,   &   at the burner..

tankless / check / fix

@ August 6, 2011 10:12 AM in Domestic hot water coil, tankless

Lerch,    i  also    have engineering  background  /  2nd. class    stationary  lic.  &  me.  master oil   tech. lic.  /     i think  ice  was   trying to nicely  tell you that  acid washing  inside of your coil  was not  a cost effective  solution /   it usually does not work well /  you need to do  prep. work that takes up time=$$$  /    i have  done   many &   not   often  worked   out well../    put in  new    flow restrictor   in     incoming  cold water supply  before   coil   rated  1/2   gal.  less than    coil   gpm    rating   &   new    honeywell  /  sparco     mixing  valve    {   this  valve is also  rated  as  anti-scald  }     //    turn up  aquastat...  /    if still n/g  ...   replace  coil  or  pipe  in   in-direct    tank...   ???    are you  on city water   or well ??  if well   you may have  more  minerals  in water  causing    build-up  both  inside & outside of coil  that would  tell me replace coil,   or take it to radiator shop  & pay them to  put in  cleaner tank  for  approx.  4 hours.  & hope for best        my  $.02    opinion...     Steve.      btw.....unless you    paint    copper pipe   black  you will not  get  accurate   temp.  with    remote    temp.    "heat-gun"
