Car wash ice melt control
@ November 1, 2011 11:44 PM in snowmelt controls
If the car wash is open 24 hours then recommend turning on the ice melt system based upon outdoor air temperature. There is no point to having a water detection system because a car could be washed at any time and the dripping water will freeze before the ice melt system can heat up the concrete.Since heating the concrete slab in the middle of winter can get expensive, its important to use a control to regulate the slab temperature. Consider using a tekmar snow / ice melt control.
If you are using a condensing Peerless boiler a 650 control is recommended. If using a non-condensing Peerless boiler, then a 362 control with a mixing valve or injection mixing pump is recommended.

Remote Sensing Thermostat
@ October 11, 2011 11:34 PM in need thermostat with remote sensor and security code
tekmar offers a number of thermostats with remote sensing capability. The basic heat only thermostat is called a Thermostat 508 and you will also need a remote temperature sensor. If you need cooling there are other available thermostats. The Indoor Sensor 076 is recommended for commercial installations but there are many other available sensor options.tekmarcontrols.com

tekmar offers communicating thermostats that can be monitored through a webpage user interface. The thermostats can be wired to any brand of switching relay including a Taco switching relay 406.The suggested parts are as follows:
Thermostat 538
Gateway 483
You can find information of these parts on the tekmar website:

The tekmar thermostat 527 can operate on one of four available system-wide schedules. In order to use a system schedule, a centralized timer model 033 can be used. The 527 then follows along on the schedule setup on the 033.Most residential building occupants typically do not use more than two different schedules in a home. For example, the Kitchen, Bathrooms and Living room areas could operate on Schedule 1, and the Bedrooms could operate on Schedule 2.

You may want to consider the tekmar House Control 400. It's designed specifically for this type of installation. Simple two-wires per thermostat, has communication so each thermostat can show the outdoor temperature, and its cost competitive to a Taco PC control with a ZVC.Here's link to the design guide:

Hello Singh, You are correct. A tN2 thermostat cannot directly connect to a tN4 Zone Manager. The reason is that tN4 is a peer to peer communication system, and tN2 as master - slave type of communication system. That allows tN2 to run power and communication over the same wires. All tN2 Wiring Centers and tN2 Zone Managers can convert the tN2 communication to tN4 and are fully compatible with all other tN4 equipment. There are tN2 Zone Managers and tN2 Zone Expansion Modules for the larger "L" box enclosure as well. These devices are called the 334 and the 324 respectively. http://www.tekmarcontrols.com/literature/acrobat/d324.pdf http://www.tekmarcontrols.com/literature/acrobat/d334.pdf JaytN2 literature

@ November 3, 2008 11:13 PM in Thermistor Tolerance
Most sensor manufacturers have tight tolerances on temperature sensors. I would doubt that the 5 to 6 degree F discrepancy is the actual fault of the thermistor bead. If the sensor is reading incorrectly there are many things one can do to correct this problem: 1)Use shielded cable. Any high voltage wires in parallel to the sensor wire can induce a voltage. The control on the end of the wire is measuring this voltage and event small changes can throw off the sensor reading by a few degrees. 2) Try insulating behind the outdoor sensor. Whenever the temperature outside is colder than inside, there is always heat transfer even if the walls are insulated. 3) Look for sources of heat such as windows, doors, vents. 4) Wire size and length of wire. If the wire was very small gage and was very long, then the wire's resistance starts to affect the resistance reading. 5) Look for moisture. Moisture can cause wires to corrode and the corrosion can add resistance to the reading. - Jaytekmar tN4
@ October 19, 2008 9:10 PM in How to determine set back recovery time
tekmar's tN4 product line is specifically designed for large setback applications and takes out all the guess work. The thermostats have two features required if you want to do large temperature setback: 1) Optimum Start - basically the thermostat learns the heat up rate of the room. 2) Indoor feedback - the thermostat works together with the boiler reset control to change the boiler target. If the room is very cold from a deep setback, then the boiler target is ramped up so that the room is warm at the correct time. If you simply install a thermostat that has Optimum Start or equivalent, there is still no guarantee the room will be at your desired temperature at the desired time. @ September 29, 2008 11:33 PM in Thermostat/Solar Control
I'm all for tinkering with your heating system, but you will likely find the system that you are proposing to be uncomfortable during the shoulder heating season (warm during the day, cold at night). It also hurts the value of your residence when you sell because nobody can fix or trouble shoot the system when things go wrong. Most of these custom systems get removed by the next owner. Instead, you may want to consider an off the shelf tekmar control 363 that includes a solar water heating option to heat your system. It requires a solar storage tank, twin injection pumps and a backup boiler to heat your floor. See the tekmar website and download the application drawing A363-4 for more information. It's been successfully installed in many locations. - Jaycycling

Consider using the new tekmar 538 thermostat, a 079 slab sensor, and a 480 user switch. The user switch allows you to change from Day to Night and to Away temperature settings. The user switch can connect to a FreezeAlarm or possibly a Sensaphone (have not checked a Sensaphone). The FreezeAlarm or Sensaphone in turn connects to a telephone line. tekmar has 20 plus years of snow melting experience. Consider using a tekmar automatic start snow melt sensor 090 and snow melt control 664, 665, or 667. The 664 offers the most options as it regulates the hyrdonic heating system using a mixing device and can stage two boilers. The 667 also operates a mixing device and one boiler. The 665 is the basic on/off unit that can operate electric snow melt or hydronic snow melt system using a condensing boiler. tekmar also makes manual snow melt control called the 650 that is suitable car wash applications. www.tekmarcontrols.com JaySensor location
@ August 24, 2007 11:58 PM in Tekmar Temp Sensor on Stelrad Boiler
The boiler sensor should be strapped onto the boiler outlet pipe using the tie strap provided. The pipe and sensor can then be insulated. Steel pipe has a longer heat up time delay than copper pipe. If you are concerned about the delay, then install a 1/2" OD immersion well into the steel pipe. The aquastat should remain installed as it is as safety rated device which the tekmar 260 is not.
