intrested in the replys

@ March 15, 2013 10:46 AM in Retrofit/upgrade suggestions

I am very interested in your replies, I am in a very similar boat. I can tell you one thing, If you remove the large pipes and repipe you will see a change in your basement heat.  Those pipes are a major heat emitter, been there, done it.

thanks

Now that I see a photo, I get the idea!! With the hinged end trim piece, I thought the vale had to fit inside there.
Thanks

TRV reccommendation

@ January 9, 2012 9:28 AM in TRV reccommendation

I guess I needed to give more info......the baseboards are on a home system run to serve each room. These are upstairs (good siz) bedrooms and on 1 seperate zone.
I am in the long process of removing the CI rads in the upstairs and powdercoating them and reinstalling with TRV in the lower level living area. The upstairs bedrooms will be all fintube, that way if I choose to have a setback thermo for the bedroom, the fintube would be more receptive.   I am short on  CI rad for the entire house and would rather have those in the living area and fintube in the bedrooms.
I thought of giving  better zoning in the bedroom with the TRV's. , but I know I will have an issuse in fitting in the trim housing. All the TRV's I have installed in the past have been on the CI free standing rad's.

TRV reccommendation

@ January 9, 2012 8:31 AM in TRV reccommendation

Would appreciate any recommendation on what brand/style TRV that is to be installed in a Slant fin fine line 30 trim.  The supply is in 3/4" copper.

Already thought about the brackets

@ January 6, 2012 2:30 PM in Installing Fintube

Didn't know they were hard to find. And the band saw is a good idea.
I knew my sawzall would rip it up, knew I would have to clean the cut up with a file.
I have some odd sizes to wrap inside this window area.
Thanks.

Installing Fintube

@ January 6, 2012 9:04 AM in Installing Fintube

I am in the process of installing fintube along a bow window, with sections that will be 2' or less. What is the best procedure, purchase each length to fit or a long length and cut tube/case to fix. I understand this will entail removing fins and cutting to make work in either case.

location of thermostat for upstairs zone.

@ February 22, 2011 4:55 PM in location of thermostat for upstairs zone.

Does that include the old round honeywell's, mercury and all?????

You guys make me laugh.

Looks as if I will be fishing new wire for the stat to be located master bed room.

thanks,

If I locate the thermostat to where I sleep and I will be comfortable.........how about the garage???

location of thermostat for upstairs zone.

@ February 22, 2011 3:34 PM in location of thermostat for upstairs zone.

I was thinking master bedroom, interior wall, in a area that won't be bumped it.

location of thermostat for upstairs zone.

@ February 22, 2011 10:03 AM in location of thermostat for upstairs zone.

I have a hot water system with 2 zones, 1 for the downstairs and another for the upstairs.
The upstairs is mainly bedrooms and stairways opens into a large hallway. The steps at the bottom of the stair, (1st floor) , has a door and at the bottom of stairs  there is a large CI rad.

I am finding the the CI rad at the bottom of the stairs sends too much heat up the stairs and shuts down the heat for the bedrooms. The stat for the upstairs is located in the large hallway, no rad's in the hallway.

I have been using the door at the bottom of the stairs as a damper for controlling the heat rising up stairs.

I can not trotttle back the CI rad at the base of the stairs, (valve inoperative).
Should I move the thermostat into the master bedroom.

Suggestions???????

Pretty much same here.

@ February 6, 2011 12:38 PM in Installing fin tube baseboard in bay window

I am removing some CI rads in the upstairs, (bedroom) of our house. Tall mop boards, after I check on the size/specs. of the baseboard, I will determine if I cut out the mop board or install in front of the mop board. I don't want the baseboard to protrude to far into the room to get kicked/beat up.  Kinda leaning towards the 30 series baseboards.

These mop boards are just painted so I will have baseboards blended in more so.
Plan on a better placement of the radiation, (ext. wall & under windows), some of the old CI rads are placed on interior walls and really interfered with room layout.

All CI rads are not matching, plan to install the matching rads downstairs in the living area based on output,ect....  after I get sandblasted and painted/coated

Upstairs zone will be all fin tube and down stairs will be CI, all home runs to manifold after re piping

Thanks,

Got it!!

@ February 6, 2011 1:18 AM in Installing fin tube baseboard in bay window

I was planning on the slant Fin 30, with price out the 80 to compare.

This will go in my 15 yr old son room., I think he is done ramming his toys into the walls, I hope!!

Have a saber saw, will use that,

Thanks all for you input!!!

You answered my question.

@ February 5, 2011 8:25 PM in Installing fin tube baseboard in bay window

Yes, I am running through a bay window that is framed to the floor. I only need 6,500 BTU for the room, (slan fin heat loss) so I will have plenty of wall space, no need or room to stack under the window.

I did plan on using the sawsall with a nice blade.

What line of Slant fin is the better grade, (this is for my own home), ?

I will be using running the return back over top of the fin tube, so less work in the corners would be better.

Installing fin tube baseboard in bay window

@ February 5, 2011 2:10 PM in Installing fin tube baseboard in bay window

I have to install fin tube baseboard in a bay window, each section is approx. 2 1/2'.
What would be the best way, purchase (3)  3' sections and cut down or a longer section into the pieces I need.

And what is the best way to cut the covers/dampers?

What is the better grade of Slant Fin??

@ February 5, 2011 2:05 PM in weil mclain VS Slant-fin Baseboards

What would you consider the better grade/line of Slant Fin baseboard?

I have some to install.

all baseboard is new.

@ February 3, 2011 9:59 PM in TRV to fit in Fin tube case

Were are installing new baseboard and making home runs to the manifold.

He have opened  rooms up and have some cold area of the room.

Some CI rads up stairs will be moved downstairs to the living areas and the entire upstairs will be on fin tube base boards.

The 2nd floor (bedrooms & Bathroom) is on 1 zone, home runs off from a manifold.

1st floor another zone all CI rads with TRV's installed, living area/kitchen.

a other zone of fin tube for front porch.

1 zone for the basement.

We are currently running with zone valves and plan on  a new boiler in 1-2 years.

Would like to operate on constant circulation.

remote sensor

@ February 3, 2011 7:15 PM in TRV to fit in Fin tube case

Never thought of the remote sensors!!!!!!

Each room of fin tube will be supplied from a manifold.
Or would a TRV on each run of baseboard in each bedroom, on the same zone, be an over kill?

TRV to fit in Fin tube case

@ February 3, 2011 1:08 PM in TRV to fit in Fin tube case

What would be a good brand/type of TRV to fit inside of Slant Fin case to control a room of fin tube.

Some of the control knob that fit on the top seem large.

Good stuff

@ January 21, 2011 9:30 AM in What is a radiator made out of???

Well, house was build in 1917, some of these rads had so much paint that the detail was a pleasant surprise after power washing.

So of the new CI after you power wash, you can have a coffee and watch the rust appear!!

passed the magnet test

@ January 20, 2011 4:39 PM in What is a radiator made out of???

Passed the magnet test!!

Magnet stuck, just must have been real good paint, took off many layers old paint but this wouldn't come off. So I thought I was down to bare metal!!

Thanks.

What is a radiator made out of???

@ January 20, 2011 4:21 PM in What is a radiator made out of???

I have power washed CI rads before and the next day you will see a surface rust.

I have this one rad.didn't rust at all, even  after taking down to bare metal, and after sitting out doors all summer long.

The metal looked a dark metallic gold like color.  Did they ever make rad. out of different metals than CI?

I am thinking bronze?????  Or am I nuts???
