This says a lot!

@ May 28, 2010 12:26 PM in This says a lot!

"are all just pissed away through the mismanagement of time and resources by the typical contractor"
Most wholesalers use "common business sense" Whereas most contractors use "installer sense", since that is how they got into the trade in the first place.  An other way to see this is wholesale owners are trained in the business world. Most contractors are trained with a wrench in their hand, and little out and out "business training".
I was in the trade as a journeyman for 42 years, and the contractors I worked for all were taught in the trade with a wrench in their hand, not in 'business" I tried to get some of them to hire a business management person and have the owner go back to the tools, but no way would they give up their desk to some suit guy.
I was known for my expertise in the trade, However every one of the contractors I wroked for, after I left their employ went down the tube.
Bottom line, If your going to operate a business, become trained in the "business of that trade" and leave the wrenches in the hands of the journeymen .or visa versa. Its two different businesses all together!

@ February 22, 2009 12:01 AM in Old trade tools,,

The smell of those tools and the old oakum bucket on-line We'd really have a thing going. and the smell of recovering the lead from those old pipes, with the gas tourch. and the pulsating roar of the firepots. Days do pass by!

Everywhere CO is a problem

@ February 19, 2009 7:37 PM in CO again!!

A huge case of carbon monoxide poisoning forces the evacuation of an Ogden business park Thursday afternoon. The levels of the deadly gas reached 20 times higher than what is deemed safe, and dozens have been taken to the hospital. The carbon monoxide levels inside the plant Elkay West plant, at 551 W. Deport Dr., were described as being lethally high. 30 people needed immediate attention and were taken to the hospital. 7 people that were considered critical had to go to a hospital in Salt Lake to be treated there. 14 others with minor symptoms were also taken to the hospital. Thursday afternoon, the workers began feeling sick while the plant, which manufactures stainless steel sinks, was evacuated.

Rumble?

@ February 18, 2009 7:38 AM in new problem

perhaps the rumble caused the ignitor failure. Have that burner proffesionally set up!

Just a thoiught?

@ January 23, 2009 6:34 PM in I seem to have a lack of oxygen in the house...UPDATE..

Have you recently done any up date inside the house? new carpet?, painted any thing, new drapes, wood work, remodel, Anything at all, that could be gassing off when the rooms get warm? Also, here in Utah, I could ask the Fire Dept. to come by and check out the fumes. They'd do that in a hurry to keep from an emergency situation. and for free. And they have meters that'd show hazerdus gasses.

I know my price. It's not a price i am looking after.

@ January 23, 2009 4:07 AM in What would be a labor factor per SQ ft

Man dog control

@ January 10, 2009 1:15 PM in Dogs & Service calls

40 years as a repair plumber. Going into various houses alone, and dogs there. Learned to keep a big yellow measuring tape and if a dog was present pull about 4 feet out. Had dogs just look at me and not bother me at all.

Bulimeia is expensive

Big enough is bigenough. Just cost. Redundency may be a factor, but if the system is perfect in every way otherwise?~~~~~~~~~~

new thermostatic trap,?

@ November 17, 2008 7:39 PM in NBo heat one radiator

Did you check this item. many have been as bad as the ones they've replaced. Find a solid disc that would cover the trap if the cap and disc removed. with a red rubber seal and a small C clamp remove the cap and disc and replace it w/ the solid disc, rubber seal, and C clamp and turn on the steam. Or just take off the cap and disc and turn on the steam. if alls well with the steam it'll come out where the cap and disc should be.

You might look

@ November 14, 2008 7:40 PM in tempstick

at supply houses that sell Formica. They bending of that material they use those crayons. I'm in Utah. so cannot help more.

I once had

@ November 14, 2008 7:35 PM in automatic air vent instalation

almost the same problem. 1-1/4 CU ell buried in a wall. Air locked hot water system. Manuel air Is the only way to do it. I drilled a 1/4 in hole on the pipe below the ell where it was accessable pushed in a 1/4 in copper tube into the top of the ell. Places a small valve on the tube and walla vented it nicely. only have had to venr it seldom. brazed the tube into the hole

I'll bet

@ November 14, 2008 7:18 PM in Air flow in PVC.....

You could use steel pipe's informatiom for this. at least the air should move slightly easier through the PVC.

Look at Lockinvar Heaters.

@ November 14, 2008 7:15 PM in Large Scale domestic hot water

I once replaced an electric system with one of their instant type heaters. It worked very well. No storage tank needed as the water was circulated around the hotel and back to the heater. I installed it according to their (lockinvar's) instructions. the water was tempered as it left the boiler room.

feret's

@ November 14, 2008 7:00 PM in Pulling mice

There are some feret's trained to do exactly that. Perhaps an internet search would find them for you. The are trained to use a harness that connects to a string they then go thru pulling the string with them. when they come out you pull in a stronger line and then you could pull the line set. Their string is marked so measure is assured. Good luck!

EMF radiation!

@ May 16, 2008 1:56 PM in Hybrid car + EMF

Drive your car! the wires overhead, the cell phones, the radio and TV transmissions Even the space station will still be there! We all are imersed in more radiation than we can think of. Its too late for worry at this point!

Its called a \"Lap Top!\"

@ April 20, 2008 1:31 PM in \"i'd like to see them make...\"

Just down load the curves, amd walla there you go. It'll do so much more than just that, HOW CAN YOU GET ALONG WITHOUT ONE IN THIS DAY AND AGE? your competior uses them on every truck. It'll keep track of all you enter in it. You could even have it keep track of milage, time, location, inventory, and the shortest way home! It could auto call your wife and say your on your way home!

Attitude Vs. Aptiitude

@ April 19, 2008 11:56 PM in Questions needed for aptitude test

There is the crux of a good prospect employee! a Greenee or trained tech. The attitude is what will either make or break THE boss & or business. Attitude comes with the man. Aptitude can be taught! So the aptitude test is good to find out what the pay scale should be. but only a long good look at the prospects attitude will he prove to be profitable. TO many times, hired for tech ability, fired for social inability! (LOUSE-Y ATTITUDE)
