Very trying...And I too failed. The "Choose File" button is not highlighted, and hence not allowing attachments...

Can it be used with modcon equipment?
@ May 24, 2012 8:10 AM in Copper Flue piping
Might be cheaper than Centrotherm... ;-)Can't say I've ever seen copper used as an exhaust vent.

@ May 23, 2012 10:57 AM in a backstage pass to an Italian manufacturing tour
I must tell you that you and Ellen did a fantastic job of teaching this young man all he needs to know to go through life. Fantastic kid, and I look forward to working with him in the immediate future. You have my envy.I surrounded myself with beautiful women, some of whom adopted and further developed their "hands on skills" (we call her Martha Villa...), and I have no regrets looking back over the years, but you've got what every man hopes for. An intelligent son who works in the industry that you were brought up in. Did I mention how good he looks? Fortunately, he favors his mom ;-)
I will have to catch the archived copy, because I will be headed West to Hydronicahhh when the show is airing.
Congrats to you and El on raising the perfect kid ;-)

Seal the openings...
@ May 23, 2012 8:16 AM in Soda Blasting radiators
I'm thinking that as long as you seal the opening to the radiators you should be fine. Baking soda should be fairly benign, but no sense in taking any chances.I have to admit, until you asked the question, I didn't know that soda blasting existed, or what it even was.. THanks for making me look :-)

@ May 22, 2012 8:16 AM in US to add large tariff to Chinese solar panels
I doubt that anything built in N.A. is a whole lot more environmentally sound...Cradle to grave, the environmental impact HAS to be huge. How much energy was consumed in the production of the aluminum, copper and glass in a typical flat plate collector?
Will the collector EVER recover those first environment impact costs?
Love to see the study.

@ May 19, 2012 2:44 PM in US to add large tariff to Chinese solar panels
Where all this "tariff money" goes to?I do... If the Chinese can make the panels cheaper than the rest of the world, then why doesn't the world go to China to get their panels?

I honestly do not know. My suggestion would be to contact Paul Rohr at prohrATlochinvar.com. The AT is actually an @ sign.If you were bouncing off of the high limit, it kinda sounds to me like you had other issues in the first place, but not knowing for sure, can't really say. It could also have to do with their ANSI approved control, but again, I am not sure. Just guessing out loud here.
Let us know what you find.

@ May 17, 2012 8:50 AM in Cleaning water boiler system before installing condensing gas boiler
That was Brad White who'd done that before, on his own system as I remember. I use magnetic water conditioners, but have yet to deploy them in a closed loop, although Caleffi just made it real easy to do with their new dirt separator...My friend, the Heatmesiter has a new water treatment system that he moves from system to system, and he has magnets in it, and he said you'd be AMAZED at what he's getting out of these non O2 barrier systems.

Sewage ejector pump...
@ May 17, 2012 8:42 AM in flush your purge carts
and a 5 gallon bucket works great for me.I actually started out with an even smaller submersible pump, but that was back in the days of 4 way valves, and 3 pumps in series. I remember doing a job up in the mountains where we had to pump glycol into a system. The local plumber was there when we were filling, and he kept walking over, looking into the bucket, and finally picked the pump up trying to see the model number on it. This was a 3 story house. Kept putting the pump back down, shaking his head, and walking away.
What he didn't realize is that the little giant submersible was pumping into the boilers 007, and due to the fact that we had the 4 way completely open, the 007 was in series with a 009 system pump, so essentially we had three pumps in series, which adds head.
I never did tell the nosy plumber why it was that we were able to achieve the fill, even with glycol. If he'd have asked me, I would have explained, but he was too proud to ask...
So, in setting up your systems, if you can set up your fill and purge such that you can also put the small submersible pump in series with your distribution pump, and fill only 1 or 2 circuits at a time, you can get 'er done in fairly short order.
I do know that SIggy has a design for a flush cart in his first volume, but I think it is more intended for filling GSHP system, which require high volume and pressure. It had a spa pump on it.
The biggest pump cart I've ever used, was a fire truck. We had to flush a down hole heat exchanger of rust on district heating system utilizing volcano power in Oregon. 350 horses... That'll get 'er done in a HURRY. ;-)

Their other boilers are completely different...
@ May 16, 2012 11:14 PM in Lochinvar listens....
The WHN and KBN are still my favorite boilers, and they have the full blown controller with all the bells and whistles. The new boiler comes with minimal control capabilities, which is another way of reducing costs. I really don't see these boilers replacing their KB and WH series boilers. I see these boilers filling a niche market of low cost, mini load applications, like converting an unfinished basement to hydronic radiant ceilings, or small condo/apartment settings.ME
I'm pretty sure its a Gianonni...
@ May 16, 2012 10:44 PM in Lochinvar listens....
But, I have one that is going on 7 years, and have not had ANY problems with it. This is the Gianonni that has a composite water jacket. Personally, the only time I've had any problems with ANY (pick a name) boiler with a Gianonni heat exchanger on it was when it was incorrectly installed, or improperly set up. My oldest Gianonni is approaching 14 years now, and its had zero problems, but it has been properly maintained.I hear what you're saying about the down fire tube heat exchanger being the ultimate, but it would also take the appliance out of the price point that it is intended for. Marketing makes the World go round...

Lochinvar listens....
@ May 16, 2012 7:31 PM in Lochinvar listens....
AND responds. We've been telling ALL high efficiency manufacturers to come out with a good quality, low input, high turn down boiler for smallish applications, and those super insulated homes for years, to no avail.
Well, it seems that SOMEONE spelled Lochinvar, was listening, and they now have a new product called the Cadet which has a bottom end of 40K btuH, with a turn down to 9K tbuH, all the way up to a 120K btuH input with a turn down to 24 K btuH. This new boiler is obviously a direct competitor to some of the low cost modcons hitting the market. I like the fact that they can be sized so low for apartment unit heating, and super insulated homes.
So, what do you think Wallies?
Good Job Lochinvar. This is but one of many reasons I like this company. We speak, they listen, and then they react.
Heres a PDF with some more specifics.
Enjoy!
