@ February 7, 2005 12:06 PM in Piggy Back Convectors?

I have the recessed convectors, and I noticed on the element themselves, there is a cap plug on both ends (well one end have the bleeder). Can I piggy back another element on these two ports to increse my output? Two units in parallel? Also the inside of the cabinets are dark and do feel cold as they are recessed into outside walls, would placing insulation that is used to wrap ducts against the pack panel help? Thanks, Neil

What about Convector Cabinet Housings?

@ February 4, 2005 5:05 PM in Insulating Radiator Covers

Just to add to your topic: I have convectors with the inside being black, would the thin foil insulation you see at HD cut and paste to the inside help with radiating more heat outwards instead of being absorbed into the black metal housing that is housed in the wall? Neil

I have an system built on the mono flow T in 1955, and all the convectors habe a valve that can turn 45 deg to turn off/on. You above most mention the fact that the systems works better with all the radiator in open position? Any reason why these valves were installed? Trying to undertand whats the best menthod to run my system. Thanks, Neil

Temp Test of Convectors

@ February 1, 2005 10:58 AM in Convector Temp. from 1st to Last Unit

Here is the system: gas fires water boiler, mono flow system with cast iron convectors, main line runs through the basement (not insulated) normal temp 65*. Rest of pipe run throught the house and garage (in wall). No insulation on the entire run of copper line. Set the boiler temp to 200*, outside is 30. First two units are seeing 195*, the 4th and 5th units are seeing 155*, and the last 2 units are seeing 140*. If this normal, or a flow problem, or an insulation issue with the main copper line? Taco 007 circulator, cold pressure: 12psi, warm pressure: 20 psi. No air in system. Neil

Zone Issue

@ January 28, 2005 1:40 PM in Pump Speed when Boiler Fires

Joe: That is a possiblity to my "temp flux" if you may. Will note if one or both zones are open and how fast the supply temp dips in each case. Thanks for the info. Neil

Haydon or Slant/Fin

@ January 27, 2005 3:45 PM in Replacing Copper Fin Baseboard

Any preference? I narrow it down to these two that are available in my area. Any thoughts: Haydon 958 or Super Heat 1000 or Slant/Fin Muti-PAK 80 Dont know if the commercial lines are available from my plumbing store. Neil

Thanks

Need more BTU

@ January 26, 2005 5:11 PM in Replacing Copper Fin Baseboard

I have a small MST bedroom bath that is facing the north side of the house, bathroom was updated before I moved in. Walls are insulated, as well as a good window. Tile floor with access from the garage and well insualated below the tile floor. The bath have a small 3 feet of copper fin baseboard and is not sufficient to heat the bath. Mono flow system with the rest of the house having convectors. I am probably guessing that they remove the small size convector to go more with the modern bathroom. Is there a higher BTU output unit I can replace this copper fin baseboard with to get more heat in that area? I have 2 local plumbing supply house I can visit, but would like to gather some more information at first. I was thinking of using the same feed from the current supply return baseboard and run pex lines at the bottom which would be the subfloor which I have access from the garage, but would 140 to 190 deg water (depending on outside temp) be too much? I am thinking the pex would be below 3 levels of medium and not in the traditional contact mode as being layed in a poured medium. Or should I just change out the 3 feet of baseboard and get the highest BTU out convector I can fit in there? Neil

@ January 26, 2005 9:51 AM in Pump Speed when Boiler Fires

Mike: I appreciate your effort and time. The unit is not constant circulation, the STAT is connected to thh zone valve and the output of the zone valve goes to the 256 and turns on the circulator when it receive a call from the stat. So the ciculator turns on when the zone valve opens. The circulator is cool to touch all the time. Boiler is not short cycling, usually about 5-10 mins on and off about 15-20 mins depending on temp. For some reason when the damper opens and the the sequence are lined up for the boiler to fire, the supply temp as indicated on the 256 drops off. When the boiler shuts down and circulator is on, I do verify that the zone valve is still open (the manual arm is loose). I have 2 zone valves, one for the main house and the next for the basement, MAYBE (will check tonight) when the boiler fires up, MAYBE its wired to open the second zone??? I have to verify that the second zone is not turning on when the boiler fires up. Regards, Neil

More Info

@ January 25, 2005 9:08 AM in Pump Speed when Boiler Fires

Mike: Thanks for your info: some more on my system. Tekmar 256 unit, bascially I am reading the temp from this unit. No thermal actuators as far as I know unless they are inside the boiler. Units is a Burnham Series 2 gas fired boiler (M/N 205). Unit is plumbed very simply, circulator on return, into boiler and out from supply is expansion tank. Pressure reducer and LWCO etc. No bypass loop. For some reason when the system fires up the feedback temp from the Tekmar drops rapidly vs when the circulator is on alone, the supply temp drops slowly. Its like almost like the pump speed increased. Neil

Taco 007 Pump Speed

@ January 24, 2005 3:55 PM in Pump Speed when Boiler Fires

I have a gas fired hot water boiler installed Sept. of last year. All is well with the system but I noticed the following: I have a Tekmar with the system and have notice that when the system goes into motion to fire (damper open etc) the pump speed tends to be faster? I can feel the pipe vibration increase and also the supply temp. feedback start to drop significantly. An example: the traget temp is 175, boiler reaches 177 and shuts off. Circulator is on (stat calling for heat) the supply pipes are hot and convectors are coooking etc. The supply temp drops down to 176, 175 slowly, now say the temp. is at 164 and the Tekmar fires the boiler, at this point I see the supply temp. dropping off rapaidly as the boiler fires up and can feel the vibration on the pump increased. Does the pump have two speeds? How is it possible for the flow to increase? Thanks, Neil

Emitters

@ January 19, 2005 3:38 PM in Boiler Size for Design Temp

The den/living rm/dinning rm/all bed rooms have cast iron convectors, the kitchen and 3 baths were updated and have baseboard. Love the output from the convectors. The entire system is ran off a monoflo system and works well. Except for the den, usually a bit chilly, lots of windows, tried to minimize draft as much as I can, will have to change the storm door in the den. Neil

@ January 19, 2005 3:16 PM in Boiler Size for Design Temp

I have an DHW gas fired heater by itself. No, the boiler is cold start, the STat controls the zone valve. The Tekmar controler sets the temp of the water. Its at max now because of the outside temp and it is barely keeping my house at 72-73. Older house, insulated but need to insualte the basement and some small leaks. Attic is well insulated and walls etc. So far it maintained the house at 72 with an outside temp of 6* using 190* water, but the circulator is on all the time and the boiler fires more frequent to get the water to 190 and then shut down.
