John's Award

@ January 24, 2012 4:15 PM in Congratulations John Barba...

Congrats, John, it couldn't have gone to a more deserving person. But, being speechless that would have been a sight to see.

My Basic Question is?

@ January 24, 2012 9:36 AM in Just Wonderin' About Propane Usage

I wanted to know how much more propane would I use if I bumped my Thermostat up from 66 to 70 deg.  In the milder winter temps.  On average this winter (mild) I've used 2.7 gals/day.  Up until this winter we've never had central heating (wood stoves) so I wasn't used to paying for my heat directly.  When I had a fill up in the middle of Dec I nearly had a heart attack.  Nearly $700, and it looks like I might have to get more before the end of winter.  So Really am I saving much money by keeping the thermostat lowered?
Thanks guys,
Rich Davis

Just Wonderin' About Propane Usage

@ January 22, 2012 2:13 PM in Just Wonderin' About Propane Usage

Does anyone know how to calculate The difference in fuel usage by difference in thermostat setting.  For example, what is the difference in the amount of gas used to keep my house 66 deg, versus 70 deg.  Not on deg design day, which is 0 deg for me but, on 20+ days. I'm using a TT60 piped direct with the ODR and radiation is BB and one small radiator.  Just something I got thinkin about the other day.  Thanks

That's a Intresting Question

@ January 10, 2012 7:18 AM in Amish

I've been around a few amish, they are a funny lot.  I know that I can't paint all of they with the same brush but, sometimes what they do can be questioned.  They are suppose to be great  at animal husbandtry,  if you go to horse sales it's not uncommon to see horses go through the ring with pitch fork marks on them.  To them animals especially horses are just a tool.
It's not that they shun modern sftuff just anything that uses electricity. No gas engines only diesel, beacuse of the spark ingiation, it's not that they can't use stuff with electric just not own it, thats why the pay phone at the intersection, they don't own it, it's not in their house.  Thats why Im courious about them and cell phones.  But they are masters of improvision and juryrigging.  I visited a furniture shop in Wisconsin thet used a weight operated paint sprayer for spraying the finish on furniture.  Very clever.
They are just like everyone else, if they are in a deal they will not come out on the short end of the stick no matter what it takes, they are pretty slick.
And a some of them you give them an inch and they will take a mile. But, once your in their graces they would do anything for you.  Some of them have tractors but, use steel wheels, they have something against rubber tires, execpt on their buggies.  If you loan them something that they can't own they have no problem using yours.
At least thats been my experiences

There Were Two Problems

@ November 26, 2011 1:35 PM in Having Trouble with a TT PS 60

The homeowner had tried to purge some air from the system, he had closed the supply and return valves to the boiler, which somehow caused to LWCO to to cause a soft lockout b-26.  And then my lack of knowledge not to realize that it was a 9 indicating a soft lock out, not a 9 as a burner problem and I mistook the b as a 6 (reached set temp). As soon as I opened the closed valves everything was fine.  Hopefully I'll learn and remember from my mistakes.  I'm not to sure about the remembering part.
What is your trick for removing the blower unit from the top of theHX/burner, as there is a mounting screw right under the blower motor.
Thanks again for the replies

Having Trouble with a TT PS 60

@ November 25, 2011 3:06 PM in Having Trouble with a TT PS 60

Got a no heat call yesterday evening, I installed this boiler about a month ago, everything checked out at the time.  In the start-up mode at pre-purge a 9 code comes up (burner blocked).  Removed burner assy looks good, no signs of any particles or soot, blew off wilh compressed air and reassembled.  No luck.  Tried calling TT, they are shut till Mon.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's been warm during the day but gets pretty chilly in the evening.  Would like to get these folks back on line asap.
Thanks loads

Wouldn't It Be Easier

@ October 30, 2011 10:35 AM in replacing baseboard

Have you researched just replacing the convector with a new one.  Maybe there was something spilled on the old one.  You wopuld probably have enough space to run one single pipe along the baseboard, unless you zig-zaged it up the wall. Just a thought.

TT60 Control Advice Needed

@ October 29, 2011 4:25 PM in TT60 Control Advice Needed

Yesterday I fired off my newly installed TT 60, everything worked fine till this morning.  There was a call for heat and it wasn't running but, the circ was running constantly.  On standby it was flashing the numbers over and over 0-5-1-7.  I checked all the parameters and they were all set to factory specs.  Turned off power turned back on, it started just like it was suppose to. Ran for about 2 min then tripped doing the same thing.  Checked the control manual that I recieved at TT training, can't find where it really covers this problem.  Any suggestions where to start looking.  Of course this happens on the weekend when TT is closed.  Thanks in advance.

It depends

@ September 28, 2011 10:10 AM in Large Coal Boiler return water temp

I would imagine that the return would need to be hot enough as to not cause condensation, and that would depend on the grade and quality of the coal that is being used.  I guess that you could go to some coal related websites and find out what temp the vapor from coal fire condenses at.

Just Checking

@ September 1, 2011 9:24 AM in new TT Solo 60 propane, yellow flame?

Most of the TT boilers are shipped with NG orifices as they are checked at the factory in NJ on NG.  They are shipped with a LP orifice to be changed on site, I'm just checking that you did that.  Sometimes even the largest things are over looked.

I missed It

@ August 24, 2011 9:17 AM in Earthquake!

I was driving just South of Staunton on my way to Fairfield when it happened.  When I arrived at the CO-OP in Fairfield the place was abuzz, wondered what was goin on, so I missed the big event of the decade here in Va. My wife works at the hospital in Lexington and she said it shook a fair amount, got everybody excited.  But, no damage detected so far.

While We Are Discussing It

@ April 19, 2011 9:12 AM in Power Flushing

Hi All,
I'll be putting water to my new system in the next couple weeks.  I used a lot of re-cycled components ie baseboard convecters and 3/4" pipe.  Should I add somekind of cleaner during the inital flush.  There is also a lot of shavings in the pipes from deburring.  I've installed a Spiro-trap, which I'm hoping will take care of the loose stuff in the system that the flush misses.  Also how would I add a cleaner?  Thanks ahead of time.

Been There and Done That

@ March 29, 2011 7:49 AM in compleat boiler room

I went last May, it was great, very informative, John kinda pushed Taco products but, that's expected as they were doing the class.  John Barba is a fantastic instrustor,he has a unique way of getting things across. I wish the class would have been 1 day longer, as the part about controls was last and I felt it was kinda rushed especially if you don't have a good handle on it.  There were a few Taco employees in the class and quite a few heating contractors that had a lot of time under their belt. Everybody learned something.   But, the class is well worth the time and money, I highly recommended it.  I would amost consider going again, as I enjoyed it and learned a lot from it.

Maybe I Missed It

I probably missed it but, what pipes burst?  Was it your heating pipes or your dhw, water pipes?
