How to pipe supply and return with an existing split loop BB heating system into the ultra

Additional Comments

@ January 31, 2011 4:25 PM in Water in radiators

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone!I tried everything, save trying to figure out what the actual water level was with a hose.  The slope of the return is good (except in one spot that is not near the problem). However, after draining the tank, filling it half way, starting it, and getting 2 gallons of water out of the radiator, the water level in the glass did not change.  So, the water had to come from somewhere.  More and more, I think the return line is plugged.I did have what may have been a leak in the return line.  But over the last month I've only seen water twice (in the same spot).  So, it may be foundation related. Oh, we get banging.  It sounds like the house is going to pop off its foundation, sometimes.  The water comes out the air vent - but only when I remove them.  The new ones stop the water from coming through (mostly). One other tidbit. Once the radiators have been flushed, the water doesn't seem to be returning to the boiler. I've been told it takes about 5 minutes after the system is off. Once the water fills the radiators again, the water seems to be returning properly. However, to get to that point, the boiler has to be refilled constantly and tehn we're back to no heat in the radiators at the end of the line and the banging.

Water in radiators

@ December 6, 2010 5:10 PM in Water in radiators

I have a customer who had about 8 gallons of water coming through his radiator vent when he removed it just prior to the boiler steam coming up stairs. I could not believe it! But that's what he said. He also said the water was cold at first then it came out piping hot.\
Below is my customers email to me a hour back. Not sure what his problem is.

MY CUSTOMERS EMAIL

A not-so-funny thing happened this week-end. I went to change the air-vent on the hallway radiator (the system had just started up) and 8-10 gallons of water came shooting out. Three things I noticed – no more banging and the PSI on the boiler dropped from 2 PSI to 0.5 PSI. Also, now the hallway and living room radiators were heating up normally. Awesome, the system was finally working right!

I then filled the boiler after all that water came out. Since then, the hallway radiator went cold after the next cycle and the banging moved to the living room radiator. (It banged under the hallway radiator the cycle after I cleared the system.) Now, the living room radiator is barely heating up. Additionally, the PSI on the boiler went from 0.5 to 2.0 over the next three cycles.

I am still filling the boiler every two days. Is it possible that there’s something preventing most of the water from returning to the boiler?

STEAM WON'T STOP!`

@ August 23, 2010 8:30 AM in STEAM WON'T STOP!`

Customer calls says the heat won't stop with the thermostat OFF and wires disconnected. Checked the pressuretrol and was at Cut in .05 lowest.

The pressuretrol must be the problem. What type of pressuretrol is needed and what setting? Anybody

Just installed a new SGO Steam Oil W/M boiler. I have about a 8 second delay in ignition with new Beckett causing an slight bang at ignition. Not sure why haven't done my smoke test yet but the burner is burning ok at the moment.

Any help?

Dave Pictures? I wish I had them. Picture a Burnham boiler that has 6 zones valves on the return I added another that makes 7. The feed comes off the boiler and feeds 7 zones of heat has been working great with 6 for 10 years (boiler ok, pump ok) I piped a Basement zone I teed off the 11/4 copper (11/4 x3/4 tee) in the ceiling to my baseboard "below" 10 feet of baseboard then up to the ceiling missing a doorway then back down to 20 feet of BB then up to the ceiling then down to the boiler return. I get no ho water flow from it. Only time the entire loop gets hot is with the fast-fill S11566F so air don't seem to be a problem...it seems to be FLOW!! Does that make it clear for you? thanks

@ June 6, 2009 8:42 AM in NO HEAT FLOW

Hi All zone valves are open circ ok..its fine "pumping away" the other zones. I suspect it is a flow problem but I am asking your thoughts and expertise as well. No one has mentioned the U shaped loop in the system yet maybe this isn't a concern as I think it is. This pressure drop has to be corrected...I am simply asking the best way out.

NO HEAT FLOW

@ June 6, 2009 7:29 AM in Hydronic heating

Got your post I left another post. No I did not use diverter tees, MUST I? The main is 11/4 copper I haven't seen a diverter tee 11/4 have you? Why a diverter tee anyway? Why not a pump on the branch for the basement zone? You must be saying that the water is racing by the basement tee (feed) and ignoring passage. Would an 11/4 ball valve installed after the 11/4 X 3/4 tee (feed) be useful to divert some of the water into the basement branch work robbing the rest of the house? Thanks

NO HEAT FLOW

@ June 6, 2009 7:23 AM in NO HEAT FLOW

I am going to re state what the problem is after hearing a few comments about it. I have a hot water boiler baseboard radiation with 6 zones (zone valves) I added another making 7. I cut in an 11/4X3/4 copper tee to feed this new basement zone. Return comes in boiler high with the others (zone valves). The existing circ is carrying all the zones on a call for heat (small 007). I think the problem is flow/piping. This basement zone has 2 floor/ceiling U-Shaped turns in it (unavoidable) possibly causing the water to trap. HOWEVER, when I run the fast fill and open up the boiler drain to bleed the entire loop gets hot in its developed length. This tells me there is no air but possibly a flow problem created from lack of circulation. I was thinking of installing a 007 on the feed side and take my chances. I'll take any help..thanks

NO HEAT FLOW

@ June 5, 2009 9:25 PM in NO HEAT FLOW

Connected another zone today (7 now in all) to a Burnham boiler hot water/ gas. Basement zone has 2 u shaped loops I had to install to get around doors but water flowing only when fast fill used. When a call for heat the feed or return does not get hot..Can't figure it. Do I use circ with relay or tap into the top of the U shaped loops with a tee and bleeder? The return piping has 7 zone valves as a manifold near the boiler. The feed tee off above to each zone. Zone valves are powered and therm calling. Its a flow problem I suspect.

No Hot water flow

@ June 5, 2009 12:49 PM in hot water boilers

Just installed another zone ^ existing this makes 7 on a hot water boiler for a basement zone. I'm getting no circulation for some reason. The hot water will circulate when I use the fast fill but on its own it will not. I do have 2 U shaped turns (ceiling to floor) which could be causing the problem. The line seems to be purged of air wondering if a circulator on this basement zone will do the trick.

@ October 29, 2008 7:48 PM in No hot water to attic radiator

The boiler system piping is that the feed pipe runs through the basement teeing off with branches to each radiator, same with return using separate tees. They don't look like mono-flow tees though. Plenty of heat everywhere nice and warm but not the attic.

@ October 29, 2008 7:38 PM in No hot water to attic radiator

You'll notice my first post says that the pressure is 17PSI 180 Degree F. Water in radiator but no heat

No hot water to the attic radiator

@ October 29, 2008 6:45 PM in No hot water to attic radiator

I am getting no hot water to my top floor radiator. New boiler, all lower floors heating good. Press 17LBS, Temp 180. All cast iron radiators. Probably 30 feet up to the attic. The radiator up there has water through the bleeder as well. Any help??
