What do you mean by filled correctly...? And its there just one fill for the whole system at the tower?...do these systems ever get air bound? And if yes how do you get rid of it?.....and in the sump of the tower I see some basket type things....are those channels?....thnks Paul S

flow

@ May 23, 2013 7:06 AM in cooling towers

All of the flow switches at every unit is in the closed position so there its flow....I have water if I open the valve at the strainers....these are self contained units....except for the flow switch at the tower....doesn't have power to it....

cooling towers

@ May 22, 2013 11:15 PM in cooling towers

Hey guys....I recently started working on cooling towers again....I stopped due to change of company....I recently went to a no cool call in NYC...all four air handlers were off on there high pressure switches...I found the tower bone Dry....the super of the building shut off the water feed to the tower because the feed line had a major leak in it....I don't know too much about these systems like I do with other ones....but why do all the pressure gauges at the air handlers which are six stories below do not read pressure?....I know this is a open loop...should I be reading pressure?...or is it just static?....the only pressure I saw was at the supply of the pump which is by the air handlers on ground level...it was 25psi...another question is why wasnt water pouring in at the top of the tower if pump was on and water its in the pipes? And is there a way to see if the strainers are clogged ?...any insight would help....just want to get better understanding of water Cooled systems....thank you guys Paul S

thank you

@ May 18, 2013 10:51 AM in r22 condenser

Thank you guys....I guess it was some sort of non condensables in the system....I triple evacuated and purged with nitrogen each time....added the correct charge.....and system is operating beautiful....thanks Paul S

r410a

@ May 15, 2013 10:34 PM in r22 condenser

Noise starts almost immediately....it does sound like the compressor bypass....that's why I thought it was over charged...and r410a being in 22 system was actually my first thought but I didn't think there would be someone that knuckleheaded to put 410 in a 22 system but you never know....thank you guys....I'll recover evacuate and recharge with new 22 and replace drier....Paul S

r22 condenser

@ May 15, 2013 6:47 AM in r22 condenser

Went on a no cooling call yesterday....newly installed 3 1/2 ton r22 condenser...with a about 10 year old air handler with txv....when I turned the system on I heard a continuous loud screeching sound which is coming from the condenser....my pressures are 500 hi side and 115 low side....give or take....amperage to compressor is about ten amps higher than rated....don't ask for superheat or subcool because I won't let the system run long enough for it to measure I installed condenser and don't want to ruin compressor...I thought it was over charged so I recovered refrigerant....same problem.....with the system off and most of refrigerant recovered (systems static pressure is 30psi) I'm still getting loud sound from compressor and high readings....bad Txv(restriction?) And when I said I installed condenser I meant my company not me personally....thank you Paul S

gas line sizing

@ May 12, 2013 6:27 PM in gas line sizing

i recently installed a rheem tankless water heater(199,000 btu).....my boss told me to tap into the existing 1" gas line....now here is what is hooked up to this gas line....1" gas line 50 ft (= 245,000btuh) there are two warm air furnaces (1) 120k btu (1) 88,000 btu....and there is a dryer and stove on the line .....heating and water heater units are at the 50 ft mark....and the stove and dryer are about the 25' to 30' mark after the meter.....oh and gas meter is a 250cph.....i explained all this to my boss and he said he never had a problem with installing a tankless heater "as long as there is 3/4" line going to the unit"....i told him he would need a bigger gas meter and a 1" dedicated gas line to the tankless heater....he just brushed it off like they always do....my question is whenever i install a gas appliance on the side i always use a gas line sizing chart....when i install tankless heaters i run 1" gas lines from gas meters...hence i make less on the job...and i have lost some jobs due to charging extra for the dedicated gas line or upsizing meter/line....what is going on that these units are operating without any problems with undersized gas lines/meters....is it really that important....on paper to my customers it just looks like there paying more than they have too.....Paul S

thanks

@ May 12, 2013 6:13 PM in duct sizing

so basically you guys are saying is for a  new install/ or existing i should invest in a ductulator ..... thanks again Paul S

under ground tank

@ May 12, 2013 3:27 PM in under ground tank

Underground tank with clogged line....they used to have two pipe system....return line is plugged probably due to partially clogged line....now the supply line is completely clogged 25" of vacuum.. Lines run in ground in a finished basement....I know I shouldn't blow back back because of possible foot valve at tank....system is running temporarily with a fiver gallon oil tank with oil line in it....one option is install brand new tank in basement....question is does anyone have any advice on how to unclog thus oil line without digging up old tank or installing new one in basement....feel bad for customer old lady no money.... Thank you Paul S

duct sizing

@ May 12, 2013 2:38 PM in duct sizing

i would like to know if anyone has any charts for duct sizes in relation to a/c tonnage....for example if a home has a 3 ton a/c system ....and customer wants to up size....a way to check to see if duct work is big enough?...

just a question

@ May 12, 2013 1:33 PM in This Week's Steamer Replacement

Why the double drop header?....is it to dry stream out more? And should I start doing that on my installations....and you dripped the main because its a counter flow system....? If you didn't have a drop header no need to drip?....thank you Paul S

vacuum

@ April 14, 2013 6:16 PM in vacuum

Can anyone explain to me what is the correct time to evacuate a system....or is it once the system is at a certain amount of microns?....

subcool

@ April 12, 2013 10:17 PM in subcool

Hey everyone....what would cause a high subcool on a under charged system....its a r410a system...very low load that day it was 50f outside...return air was about 65f....txv system...I don't remember the exact pressures....95 psi lowside....200 highside....17f subcool....just would like to know....was it the low load conditions?....temp split was 12f....thanks Paul S......ohh coils were clean....brand new install

steam system....im taking out a 100,000 btu boiler....it says 267 sq ft on the name plate....ill be putting in a 69,000 btu which can do 175 sq ft....home has 5 rads equal up to 98 sq ft ....and will be installing basement hot water condensate zone... PAUL S...

no money

@ April 3, 2013 11:05 PM in square feet

the customer is on a very low budget....want to know if i should use a pick up factor of 33% thanks PAUL S

square feet

@ April 2, 2013 10:41 PM in square feet

hey everyone im replacing a gas fired steam boiler with a condensate loop for basement....i will be taking out a 100,000 btu boiler (267 sq ft)....i measured all radiation only five rads in whole house ....it came out to 98 sq ft.....heat loss of basement is 16,000 btus....smallest boiler i can get right now is 65,000 btu....question is do i figure in a pick up factor of 33% on this job???....no insulation on steam mains and i will not be adding insulation....do not want to get a boiler too small thanks PAUL S

Does anyone have any links and/or insight on radiant cooling I never did it before...have a customer who is asking for a install....thanks.....Paul S
