boiler shutdown

@ October 27, 2005 10:31 PM in spill sw shutdown

Got a call from an old customer today that her boiler was not working w/m gas unit standing pilot. Pilot was lit but burner would not come on ,gave it the usual once over, in general it looked ok but whoever installed it did a sloppy job piping and wiring. jumped thermostat and checked for power at valve 0 volts went to spill sw and found it open so I reset it and boiler lit off......wondered why it went off so I lit a match and was suprised to find it blew it out as well as the water htr did then I opened a window in the basement and it still was blowing it out..Water htr and boiler are common vented into a 6 in smoke pipe 2 ft long then go into a 3 by 9 rect. duct then disappear behind a finished wall and into a chimney...Chimney is an exterior chimney with tera. lining and is apprx 30 ft high droped a lite down and saw no blockage however there is turns and bends at lower end I was unable to inspect ....It was getting dark so I shut down both units and called my chimney man for A.M. appointment to check further...I did go get them a co det. as well as asked who installed unit..so happens he has no lic...house is 60 yrs old with finished basement make up air is not perfect..... looking for thoughts

bad steam boiler piping

@ September 18, 2005 7:22 PM in Bad steam boiler piping

If the job i am called out to was done improperly and that guy is now sitting home with his money i will tell h/o that they should call him back and ask several question 1 did you pull a permit? 2 is the unit installed by manf.specs? 3 tech came to my house and said unit is unsafe and suggests i turn it off for safety reasons now my family has no heat and possible co poison.....suggest you hire someone real fast to fix what you did not do correctly.....because if you took my hard earned money and said you were a heating contractor and did not do the job correctly the first time you cant come back except to give me all my money back.....i as a contractor will NOT fix what some other contractor did nor will i use his big box purchased crap.....

Thanks Pat and Steamhead for your input Steamhead you e mailed me some real good info last week on this subject about the farm house here an mass....In this project the only remaining items i will be reusing are some of the radiators all the rest must go, boiler and pipes for the old one pipe system....I have allowed myself time to upgrade the existing radiators and repipe system to fhw.The homeowners want fhw and as mush as i would love to build a steam system i must make the customer happy..There can be no better tool than this site, the infomation you guys pass on shows the proffessionalism of our trade thanks again J A

I am going to be converting a steam system to fhw and I will be removing all the old piping. I plan on using as many of the old radiators as I can I was wondering in order to use the existing radiators should they be nipple connected top and bottom and have vent tappings at the top.Has anyone ever drilled and tapped a radiator for a new vent location. thanks for any advise you maight offer.
