@ August 26, 2006 8:05 PM in Off Topic - Hawaii

10 years of marriage, I'm sure we'll have to ask for directions to find it!

thanks...

@ August 25, 2006 11:12 PM in Off Topic - Hawaii

for all the feedback. I can honestly say I've never been anywhere exotic like Hawaii. I'm just starting to plan the trip for mid-November (hope I've got time) and I'm already getting excited!

Thanks for the tip...

sounds pretty good to me. Sarah is pretty laid back. She'll probably want to spend most of the time on the beach and site seeing. Sure would like to load up my golf clubs :)

Vacationing in Hawaii

@ August 25, 2006 10:33 AM in Off Topic - Hawaii

I am planning a surprise trip, for my wife and I, to Hawaii for our 10 year anniversary and I know some of you guys have been there. I would appreciate any advice on what part of the state to stay and other things that might be helpful to someone that knows nothing about it.

customer's in a pinch and is looking for a used steam boiler.

@ July 24, 2006 11:14 PM in used steam boiler source

Hello Wallies, Long time since I've posted, but I've been reading posts since I first found the site. ... Great to read the posts as always. I have a customer with several apartment building boilers that all need either replacement or repair (section replacement). Currently looking for a used 800k btu and a used 1,000k btu steam boiler. Located in Michigan, but I'm sure arrangements could be made for reasonable distance pickup/delivery as well. Please contact me if you have either size or know of a source for used boilers. Thanks in advance. John S. jshea@detroitsteamheat.com

Blue Goo

@ April 1, 2006 11:08 AM in Okay plumbers, have at it

I wouldn't have believed it if not for first-hand experience: Two commodes I recently troubleshooted with the same problem. Sometimes they flushed, sometimes they didn't. Turns out, both of them had those 'self-cleaning' tablets or cakes or whatever you call them, in the tank. Remove the cakes (with rubber gloves on cause they stain bad) and give it a dozen or so flushes.... problem disappeared. I read that the cakes change the chemistry (I believe particularly the density) of the water... and of course, the vortex' design was calculated with a certain 'chemistry of water' in mind. Again, I never would have believed it if I didn't 'see' it. Here's a good informational site on toilets: THE BLUE GOO STORY aka The Lazy Flush Hope this helps you... or someone.

IE settings

@ June 16, 2005 9:03 PM in Dan (Secure Server)

I checked them and all seems well. I have netscape installed as well and the lock shows up fine in that browser. However, with Netscape I get three popup messages about security. First one says 'entering secure site' second one says 'leaving secure site' third one says 'entering secure site' again. I have a feeling it has something to do with the way the Cold Fusion app has to run for the cart, but I'm not sure. Also, sometimes if there is a secure page inside a non-secure 'frames' page, the lock will not appear. I have no concern with ordering through the site, because I know how to check for the certificate even though the lock doesn't appear (for me). However, I was just giving Dan a heads up that if others don't see it, it could be potential for lost sales.

Hi Dan,

Hi Dan,

@ June 16, 2005 6:15 PM in Dan (Secure Server)

I ordered (and am looking forward to ) the new venting capacity chart by Gerry & Steve. I noticed that no 'lock' icon appears in the bottom of the browser window which indicates that there may be a problem with your SSL certificate. Many savvy web customers look specifically for that lock before they place a CC order. You may want to check with your webmaster or with Verisign. The page that asks for your credit card is appropriately a 'https' address which means it is secure. I was able to view the security certificate by looking at the page properties. But it seems to me that the 'lock' should appear as well. I managed a regional computer manufacturer's website for a few years and some shoppers were adamant about seeing that lock and knowing that the site's security certificate is in order.

Thank You ALL..

for your suggestions. I hope to help someone as you have helped me here!

looks pretty good...

@ June 7, 2005 9:51 PM in new site

Overall, NICE SITE! Gave it a quick once over for load time as it was slow to load my first visit (after that it's quick because images are cached) It seems that the 'header' image is way larger of a file (95K) than it needs to be. I have 'optimized' it in photoshop, and without much quality loss I was able to cut that by almost two thirds (35K). I have attached the optimized image if you want to give it to your webmaster to replace the current one. The other image thumbnails were all pretty optimized other than a few that were again way larger than needed for good quality. Below is a list of the thumbnails with image sizes. I would have them re-optimize the ones that are around 20000 - 30000 bytes. (20k-30k)  List of all images in Boucher Energy Systems Inc.:

Hope this helps!

I'd like to use Pex...

@ June 6, 2005 8:10 PM in burying copper

but I'm just too unfamiliar with it; don't have the right tools; etc. Hope to use it in the future. Plus, it's only an 8' run and I'm comfortable sweating copper.

3/4\" hardwood

@ June 6, 2005 8:08 PM in burying copper

will go over the slab. not sure about additional sub-floor under that. The 'patch' will be about 3"D x 9"W x 8'L. I'm probably being overconcerned with the structural part (however, 1" tube + 1" insulation leaves a thin 1" on top). I'm more concerned with durability of the insulation. Any idea what the approximate thickness of the glass is? only used it on steam pipes upwards of 1 1/4". Thanks for your reply.

A customer wants to eliminate two baseboard units.

@ June 6, 2005 7:10 PM in burying copper

The main loop that feeds the two baseboards is inaccesible (for all intents and purposes), therefore, our plan is to cut out the radiation and reconnect the supplies/returns. One of the pipes we would like to bury in concrete to acheive flooring goals. My questions are: What type of insulation should be used to protect the copper in the slab (from chemical reactions)? Is there a minimum slab thickness that should be maintained for the sake of structural integrity? Does anyone make a 'coating' or 'tape' as opposed to an insulation as insulation will greatly reduce the thickness of the floor? There's about three inches to work with and it's (to my surprise) 1" copper tube. Wallie recommendations are much appreciated.

Where are you located?

@ June 3, 2005 3:29 PM in Help Wanted

I'd like a chance to get into the business, but I'm in Michigan. Not quite ready to pick up and move (depending on where).

sounds like overkill...

if you ask me. A good latex paint has been on some of our radiators for 20+ years. No peeling or discoloration.

@ May 29, 2005 10:05 AM in Great email from a friend...

It's funny how our perspective can radically change as we get older. Thirty five years ago (If we had e-mail) I would not have forwarded this. This breaks my ten year vow to never forward chain mail or messages. Perhaps it was my 84-year old father-in-law, homebound, putting his medals on the kitchen table Saturday and telling me, again, about the hedgerows in France. He did not tell me, this time, about picking up coal near near the RR tracks at Detroit's stockyard as a child to be used for heating his family home during the depression, Surely the Greatest Generation...Mike It is the VETERAN, not th! e preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. I don't know if yo! u saw this in the news but it really impressed me. Funny, our US Senate/House took 2 days off as they couldn't work because of the expected storm. On the ABC evening news, it was reported tonight that, because of the dangers from Hurricane Isabelle approaching Washington DC, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They respectfully declined the offer, "No way, Sir!" Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a serviceperson. The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930. I don't usually suggest that many emails be forwarded, but I'd be MIGHTY proud if this one reached as many as possible. We can be very proud of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve. God! Bless them.

Devcon

@ May 24, 2005 10:32 PM in cast iron radiator has small cracks - can they be fixed?

Whatever epoxy is used, the crack will need to be grinded or 'dug out' for it to hold. I haven't used Devcon on radiators but on automotive castings(engine & components). looks like they've got some newer products that may be even better suited. pretty neat product here: http://www.devcon.com/devconcatsolution.cfm?catid=17 As for welding, it may need to be brazed. If you have the means, you could take the rad a local welding shop. shouldn't cost too much. Let us know what happens!

never really noticed what my hot water tank does...

@ May 24, 2005 9:05 PM in HW savings

during the night. Does it run the burner? If so, how many times? Could anyone see a savings in fuel consumption (even slight) if one were to somehow throttle the tanks thermostat to 'vacation' during the night? I guess I'm asking if there's such a thing as a programable tstat for hot water tanks. If so, do you think any significant amount of fuel could be saved?
