pressure settings

@ December 5, 2008 8:10 AM in Proper setting for pressure controls

It depends on the system requirements and how much steam you need to fill the system. In general terms, without a system description of the sytem, your setting sound high. Some very big systems run on very little steam pressure. I generally use .5 cut in with a differencial of 1 for a 1.5 cut out. High limit should not be set higher than the rating of your vents or you will be changing them often. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Maine deer hunting

@ November 25, 2008 11:31 PM in How is the Deer Hunting? - Darin Cook

Kill is way off as the winter took its toll on the herd. Went out opening day and saw a nice fat doe but no permit. Was supposed to get out this week but came down with a bad cold and had to stay home. Heading to camp after TDay dinner and then two weeks of muzzleloader season.....wonder if I can put off those 3 steamer change outs.....nah. Getting cold up hea' in the big wood. Happy holidays. Thanks Joannie, I did receive the manual and it answered my questions...typical service issues, not a problem with the boiler. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Weil

@ November 17, 2008 4:53 PM in Problems with the new Ultra?

You're right about the disagreement. I have installed over 300 Weil Mclain boilers in the last 13 years and I have NEVER had an issue with lack of support or technical info. I hear a lot of guys complain but seldom to I here: "maybe it's me and my attitude", but they have been great with me. I have the MA and MI phone # in my cell phone and the company President's card in my file. Sure, some reps are more sales oriented and some are technically better, but using them as support and not sounding boards for your problems will usually get you the answers you need...in a hurry. I do admit I would like to see more training B4 a new product hits the market, but Weil isn't alone in that department. Still my choice for the best boiler made in the USA. Ultra lock out

@ November 17, 2008 4:45 PM in Weil Mclain Ultra 3 Lockouts

had the same issue with a 155 lately. Our problem was on the domestic side. How did you size the circ for the indirect? If you used the chart in the Plus book, there lies your problem. Weil decided to go for a 2 degree drop across the heat exchange instead of a 5 degree in the earlier series and we had the wrong circ on the indirect. Use the manual in the boiler book and check your flow rates. I think this will solve your problem. Weil is aware they have to reprint the indirect book for the new series boiler. rad ratings

@ November 17, 2008 10:42 AM in rad ratings

Found a house full of radiators that I can't find references to for sizing. Checked the library and all my books. IF its there, I missed it...getting old is a bummer. These rads look like Bundy rads, single row of 3" tubes, 36" high. Tubes touch each other but don't appear connected except at bottom. Sorry I don't have a photo...good lesson learned to always have a camera along for the ride, you never know when you see something new and exciting. Anyone have ratings for these works of art? TSP

@ November 12, 2008 6:21 AM in DOES ANYONE KNOW AN ALTERNATIVE TO TSP?

I use a product called 8-Way that appears to work very well in cleaning up a dirty boiler after skimming. Leave the water purple in the glass and it turns green as the water conditions deteriorate. Kind of like liquid litmus paper. Works very well and safe on the gasketed boilers. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Dad and vets

@ November 11, 2008 10:48 PM in Our Greatest Generation - My Mom & Dad

Great Post, guys. Spent some time with my Dad tonight discussing how to split up his heating system to put the TV room on a separate zone. He's 93 now and taught me my trade but doesn't understand things like zone valves and pex tubing. He served in WWII as a combat engineer building Bailey bridges ahead of Patton's Army and was 30 feet away from Patton the day they told him not to cross the Rhine and Patton said; "Hell we did that three days ago". Mom (91) just chuckles everytime Dad tells that story, over and over and over......Salutes and praise to the men who served to keep us free !!! Trianco boilers

@ November 11, 2008 10:36 PM in Trianco boilers

Ran across an older Trianco oil fired direct vent boiler today with a Beckett AFGII burner, direct vent. Tag of course was on the side up against the wall and almost impossible to read but looked like a model MAX100-DV. Looking for information and manuals. Anyone know who reps this product in New England. Web site of no use. Thanks in advance. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

indirects

@ October 10, 2008 7:03 PM in Indirects

I like the tank in tank style ( Phase III and Weil). No coils to worry about and they make a ton of hot water, especially hooked to a steam boiler. Hundreds installed in the last 12 years or so with no issues. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

steamer bounce

@ September 30, 2008 3:43 PM in bouncing water line

I wouldn't skim at the safety valve. Should be done at or near the normal water line. Sounds like skimming should do the job for you. Have you checked for plugged or restricted returns, or is this boiler on a pump? To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

@ September 28, 2008 11:24 AM in Carlin EZ Gas Conversion Burner

Generally they do work well, but the cons are these: Is the boiler UL listed for use with a gas burner? Will you void the warranty on the boiler by changing it to gas? Is putting a UL gas burner into a UL listed oil boiler allowed in your code jurisdiction? How much liability do you want to accept for making this change? If something happens and you get sued, will your insurance cover it? It's a big issue here in the Northeast and in Maine especially. The manufacturers got caught with their collective pants down as it generally takes weeks to get a burner. I recently did a survey of manufacturers and some will cover against manufacturing defects only if the burner is changed, and some won't. It's a chance you take by changing the specs on a unit that was UL listed for one application only. Step carefully. Best bet on convertions.....change the boiler too. boiler cleaning

@ August 18, 2008 8:18 AM in Boiler Clean-out: Was I Misled by the oil company?

I would take those photos to the oil company and talk to the President/owner. Tell him if that is the standard by which they treat their customers, then you want out and your money back. Offer to pay for the parts but demand a return on the labor. This is very poor work !!! Spouting off here on the wall may be soul cleansing and will give you support, but ignoring the issue by not addressing it with the guilty party will not make the problem go away. These companies need to be confronted with their less than professional attitudes and procedures....go get "em.
