I have already told my customer to adjust the vacuum breaker from the factory set 2" down to 1".

Steam vacuum breakers

@ March 30, 2010 10:49 AM in Steam vacuum breakers

I have a customer that's having trouble with his Hoffman #62 vacuum breakers. They aren't stopping the boiler from going into a vacuum. I'm wondering if the #62's are not meant for this application. The boilers are 100hp running between 7 and 10 lbs. I would appreciate any input.
  Thank you, Anthony Menafro

Heating hell!

@ January 29, 2010 10:08 AM in Human nature

   Dan,
I know that I like to see some of the things that have really been butchered on the job and more importantly, that these things have been resolved by TRUE professionals.

\" Dead Men Tour\"

@ June 28, 2007 8:31 PM in \"Dan's Dead Men Tour\"

Dan, Once again I would like to thank you for your professional approach and abilities at yet another fine seminar. I thoroughly enjoyed our time on Tuesday evening in the lovely town of Newark,N.J. You always keep me on the edge of my seat, even after filling me up with food and beverages. Thank you for an educational night of stories. mayhem and fun. The seminar "was a bird". Thank you to "The Lovely Maryann" for her hospitality. Humbly yours, Anthony J Menafro

I would lean towards the ability to zone areas more easily with hydronic as opposed to steam. I say, as long as it isn't scorched air, more power to you. Anthony Menafro

Anticipator

@ April 12, 2006 6:53 PM in Heat Anticipator

Charles G, Honeywell makes their new t-stats (digital) with adjustable anticipators. You really have to read into the booklet to find out how, but it's in there. Since the new ones are out, my steam systems haven't had any short cycling. Anthony Menafro

Siphon Jet

@ April 5, 2006 7:22 PM in Okay plumbers, have at it

Normally, when a problem like that occurs, I find that the siphon jet(the small hole at the bottom of the toilet) gets caked up over the years and doesn't allow the flush to get it's Kick Start. I usually use a wire hanger that I've taken apart and clear that jet out. Then I tell the customer that I'll be back to do that again in another ten years. Anthony Menafro

Pro-press

It's not legal in N.J. as of yet. Anthony Menafro

Wick

@ March 10, 2006 10:28 PM in Lamp Wick for Sealing Threads

You have to back it up with dope(teflon paste, etc.) or it will leak. If you still have the ball of wick, you could use an approx. two foot piece and separate the strands. Anthony Menafro

Water supply

@ February 24, 2006 8:46 PM in Bull headed tees and steam

Hey Ron, Why is the water piped directly into the boiler instead of into the return piping? I don't mean to knock such a beautiful job, I'm just wondering if it makes any difference. Thanks, Anthony Menafro

Pro press

@ February 24, 2006 8:33 PM in pro press and steam

Yes they are rated for steam. You have to change the rings though. Don't know how I feel about it in the long run. Anthony Menafro

Steamhead

@ February 19, 2006 1:15 AM in These air vents suck!

I agree with your diagnosis, but, if it's a long enough runthat may also be undersized, it will suck air at the end of every cycle. I don't think that insulation will completly solve the problem. I feel that a vaporstat would be a better alternative. If the pressure doesn't build as high, there won't be such a vacuum action. Anthony Menafro

Dan, That's nothing like the snowy weather they're predicting for the East coast. Enjoy it while you're away. Anthony Menafro

Linhardt

@ February 8, 2006 12:12 AM in one pipe steam remodel, lots to look for, Pat Linhardt

Thank God for Mr. Linhadrt and the Field Guide to Steam Heating. I can't say enough good things about the book and the ease of use with it. I'm happy to say that I talked two of my coworkers who are interested in truely learning about steam heating and steam systems into purchasing the Field Guide. They have looked my book over and can't wait for their's to be delivered. Thanks again Mr. Linhardt. Anthony Menafro

Teflon

@ February 5, 2006 11:29 AM in Is using Teflon a no-no on cast fittings?

You can't use teflon on oil because it is broken down by the oil and will leak or worse, suck in air causing problems. Anthony Menafro

John, Amen brother. Stay on your soapbox because you're on a roll. I agree with all three of your posts and find it unfortunate that you have been driven to having to make these posts. I hope that all works out well for you in the NEAR future. Anthony Menafro

Hawaii

Fire code

@ February 3, 2006 11:31 AM in Calling All Masters of the Code...

Constantin, As far as codes go, if you don't need something (sprinkler system) and decide to provide it anyway, you will be subject to the full compliance of the code. It's a shame that you tried to provide extra protection for your bldg. and are being harassed for going the extra yard. This is why people try to do things without permits. The very professionals who work under the letter of the law are the same ones who get hung by it. Good luck, and keep up the "Right and Legal" work in the future. Anthony Menafro
