Much thanks all. I feel blessed to be a part of a great team!Geoff- I called JB and explained that I would no longer be a part of the trade council, so no, I won't be at any more meetings. Great group of contractors and I was fortunate to be among you.
Devan- I hope to be at Reno for the RPA event but we'll see what Lochinvar has me tasked with.
Kal- Love the ideas. Lochinvar has a lot exciting projects coming...Most are so secret that I don't even know about them. :)
My best to all of you,
Paul
A new beginning
@ December 31, 2009 5:19 PM in A new beginning
Hello All,I haven’t been hanging around The Wall much lately as I have been in the process of officially hanging up my radiant contractor tool belt and buttoning up jobs , as well as preparing for my new position with the Lochinvar Corporation as their new Residential Boiler Product Manager. I have been a big fan of theirs for quite a while as a distributor, then installing contractor. Now I am excited to be a part of their team.
I left Nebraska last Sunday and arrived in Nashville on Monday. My family is staying behind until our home sells and then we will be all together again here in the greater Nashville area, close to, if not in Lebanon,TN.
I look forward to hearing from all of you and will be available at prohrs@lochinvar.com if you have any input about Lochinvar products and services.
All the best from Tennessee,
Paul

Nice work Scott. You seriously need to post that on Knightheatingboiler.com as a registered installer. I am certain this would be a top contender in their monthly contest. All the best from Nebraska,

It just reads funny. Sounded like avoiding short-cycling is bad for any appliance.just syntax. I thought thats what you meant. Sorry for the corn-fusion. (Another Mark Eatherton-ism)

Not a good scenario?
@ November 10, 2009 8:09 AM in buffer tanks ,ODR and mod cons
"Which is NOT a good scenario for any fired appliance"?????? - Longer on times and longer off times seem like a pretty good thing to me.
Can you elaborate on this?

Questions

Questions for you:What size boiler is it and what pump is on it?
Is there a wye strainer?
What is the system pressure?
Has the system been cleaned and is there any system treatment or glycol in it?

Radiant Forensics Test
@ October 9, 2009 8:34 AM in Radiant Forensics Test
Here is a link to a new feature that will appear in PHC News and will also be in the "What's Hot" section on Lochinvar's web-site.[url=http://www.lochinvar.com/puzzle.aspx]http://www.lochinvar.com/puzzle.aspx
It is a mechanical and electrical drawing that is flawed. Click on the "What's Hot" tab on Lochinvar's site, click on the "Problem" page. You may want to print it so you can see everything clearly, and when you think you have found the corrective actions, click on the "Solution" tab to see what the proper system should look like.
It is a good way to polish your service skill's before and during heating season.
Happy Hunting...

LWCO Location
@ October 3, 2009 9:20 AM in LWCO w/a Knight Wall Hung
I looked at the Manual for McDonell-Miller LWCO's and it stated that the probe needed to be installed above the minimum safe water line as determined by the boiler manufacturer.I looked at the Knight piping recommendations and it just says that a LWCO may be required when boiler is piped above the radiation level, but not give a specific location.
Here is a pic of an alternate location that I would consider. Use another tee as a 90 on the lower end of the system loop. It is still the lowest part of the system piping as opposed to the boiler piping.
You can always email Lochinvar tech, they're a pretty sharp group.

One location option
@ September 29, 2009 5:15 PM in LWCO w/a Knight Wall Hung
Here is one location option. Obviously, there is no scale in this JPEG. Is your system loop above the boiler? Height is slightly exagerated for clarity.Paul
Expansion Tank Location
@ September 17, 2009 7:24 AM in Hydro Seperators
When using a hydroseparator, I prefer locating the expansion tank on the source side (boiler loop). As the Caleffi Hydroseparator comes with a drain for the lower tap, I would leave that clear to purge small amounts of sediment that could accumulate. Pipe in another tee and you will be good to go.Paul
Is this the Glycol Pig you're looking for?

I drew this up when I first heard ME talk about it. I think this is what he had in mind.Hope this helps.

The Answer

Jones Stephens makes a MIPxSWT bushing. It sweats on to the end of ½" copper to get you to the MIP thread. It is a B55-001.

A safe bet
@ August 17, 2009 8:21 AM in Dual Mod/Con Install Pics
It is a safe bet that this job is a contender if not a sure thing for some System Showcase accolades.Beautiful work Devan. Is that grey melamine? Very well thought out and I love the piping as it dissapears into the wall. Your concealed wiring is top shelf.
I think I will have to go "Tonya Harding" on you before the System Showcase Awards if I'm to have a chance. :)
Best to you,
Paul

@ August 16, 2009 8:17 AM in NEED HELP IDENTIFYING
I didn't know such a thing existed and don't know that I can offer any help.I am curious as to how it works though. Are there bolts holding the casing together around an assembley of sorts? I am wondering if there are some kind of bellows in it, much like that in Leonard mixing valves. The missing wires have me intrigued.
Looking forward to the REX show in Reno 2010.

Isometric Boiler Piping in Visio
@ August 15, 2009 9:29 PM in Isometric Boiler Piping in Visio
I was taking a break from some reading today and was poking around online for some new Visio stencils and I found these isometric piping stencils.I created a 3D stencil for zone valves and air-separators but still need to come up with a circulator.
Yes, I know I need help, but drawing in Visio IS part of my 10-step program for hydronic sanity.
