And is the furnace side wall vented. I have had many occasions that if the kids can get to the comb air inlet and they are in the age range of 3 to 6 years old they will drop small stones used for landscaping down the comb air and it has caused problems like this in the past for me. Just a thought MattState law in Colorado now being enforced.
@ October 25, 2010 9:36 PM in All of these reports are great,but....
Mark I am sure you are aware of the new state law that mandates co detectors be installed when ever a fuel burning appliance is replaced in Colorado. I had an inspection in Brighton and passed the mechanical side but was made aware that there needs to be a co detector within 15' of any bed room. I did some research and the law puts the responsibility on the home owner? Now after the inspector brought this to my attention I ran some Co detectors up to my clients house, but that being said why would the legislature put that responsibility on a home owner. This I do not understand. Just wanted to share this story as it blindsided me as to the new legislation, I had not heard a word from my wholesaler, or any other source. MarsNATE Cert

Do any of these qualify for NATE cert points? Thanks MattLow water cutoff in position of flue
@ October 14, 2010 10:42 PM in Boiler Problem
The low water cut off in the picture is a 24 volt guard dog LWC manufactured by McDonnall Miller. I have stopped using this type due to problems in the past. I do not like the location of the LWC in relation to the SS flue off of the boiler as it looks awfully close to the flue and may have overheated causing this challenge. I would jumper the yellow wires and see if the unit comes back to life. If it works move the LWC and change it out to a new 120 volt and your done. If not follow the path of the 120 volt power and find out where if stops. If that has no end it is in your safety's on the 24 volt side. Again find the voltage impediment and if none show them selves it may be a bad board. Good luck MarsThe Dreaded DDC control question
@ July 16, 2010 11:34 PM in The Dreaded DDC control question
I was smart enough to bid Denver Public School project and I got it. Both good and bad, the School was in hard shape and the deadline is tight. I just found out the old mechanical timer and pneumatic controls that are the brains of the building have failed. the PM for DPS wants me to coordinate a DDC control system for the heating only plant in the building. I do not at this point in time speak DDC with any clarity. anyone out there familiar with DDC controls at all. Thanks Matt RossiStay away from Brazilian Cherry

I have a floor that did not do well with B Cherry, I believe that the hard wood floor institute would not recommend this installation, the other woods I have no experience with as a flooring product. Good luck MarsMy understanding
@ March 4, 2010 11:05 PM in Wholesalers
I have a very good relationship with my primary wholesaler. I have had discussions with him concerning this very subject and as always it comes down to warranty issues and liability issues. If I purchase part X and install it in your home I assume the warranty on part X, if it should fail and cause an issue then we work out the problem through the wholesaler and the manufacture to satisfy the issue. As usual it has more to do with the legality and the lawyers than any thing else. In this society one has to CYA as they say. Sincerely Matt RossiYes to an extent.
@ March 4, 2010 10:45 PM in Do you calculate Heat Loss every job?
On the new construction projects I do a manual J, on a boiler replacement I will get the lineal feet of base board and match that load, providing the customer has no complaints with the existing system. On CI rads I find the EDR of the rads and base the boiler load on that provided the customer has been comfortable to this point. Sincerely Matt RossiPotential for growth

Would not the compression tank be an ideal area for the growth of unwanted guests to the system, it would seem to me that the temps would be more favorable to unwanted bacteria within the system. Just a thought. MattMy personal water heater
@ November 4, 2009 12:01 AM in Legionnaires Disease and Hot Water Tank Temp
After having heard what ME went through with LD I personally keep my water heater at 160 deg. To hot some might argue but my kids are older, and I appreciate the additional hot water for showers and baths. energy efficient? No but am I killing any bugs in my system yes. You might ask why do I keep the temp so high. The answer is simple my wife has Hep C and has a compromised immune system to deal with. This is a simple way to deal with a real problem. Sincerely Matt RossiPlease explain three point

Ya that system is hurting bad. Love the placement of the Air scoop right off of the HX of the boiler, that's great. We don't need no laminar flow for that thing to work do we. Yikes whats a guy to do but tell the HO the truth, you got hosed on the install it needs to be done right. Good luck.ECR DX geothermal heat pumps
@ September 1, 2009 12:49 AM in ECR DX geothermal heat pumps
I have a customer that has one of these systems in place. The system has what is supposed to be a conical vertical bore configuration for the ground loop. bore at a 30 deg angle from a central point down to 100' 6 each loops for 6 Ton system. 5 Ton ADP AHU with ECM blower set to high speed. ECR 6 Ton DX heat pump both ways. This system has gone through 6 compressors in 4 years. My firm was called in to verify cfm across the AHU for the home owner. The home owner had a new geothermal heat pump installed in March of 08 and the comp died of short to ground in the windings. There is no acid in the system that we can dectect. The cfm of the AHU says that it should cary the geo heat pump. The HO is a contractor and this is his personal house. Not being involved in the instalation of the system all I have to go on is the HO information. The installing contractor has left the busines, and I hope to be able to help him with his system. Any thing I should be looking for in the instalation of the system? The system did lose a loop that had to be replace due to a bad braised joint on start up. Thank you for any input on this question. Sincerley Matt Rossitbone I think I see what your trying to do but need more info
@ August 25, 2009 12:35 AM in plumber
Tbone I feel that your are on the east coast and that the boiler you are dealing with either has an indirect fired heat exchanger in the boiler or an exterior mounted heat exchanger to transfer the heat from the boiler to an external HX to transfer heat. If you are dealing with a Internal HX that sees constant high temps from the boiler you may need to look and see if a pressure reducing valve is installed on the domestic water system. to the house and make sure that it has the ability to alow exes presure to bypass the valve. if this is not the case and you are on a well system you may need to look at a expansion tank for the DHW tank.
