Give us some....

more specifics about your system. Size of boiler and model/make, how big are the zones, what type of emitters( cast iron rads, fin tube, radiant...) You may not need a bypass at all.

@ October 12, 2010 6:57 PM in Should I replace Entran 3 ? [not Entran 2]

had 1 experiance w/ the Entan 3 and it was not good. After 10 years it was plugged on 1 loop and poor flow in the other 2. This was a radiant application in a staple up. It was VERY brittle. needless to say it had to be removed.
Now you say it is still flexable.... thats good. I would wait untill you see other issues. no sence making a lot of work unless you need to. Now having said that you should start to plan for that day when problems start.....

sounds like a couple...

of things. Some how water is getting drawn up into the system. Could be poor piping at the boiler or Dirty water. Flush out the system and skim. Got pix?

when  it is best to walk away.... If he does not value your professional opinion chances are that if you do as he asks it might  come back to bite you on that design day in January where the system will not maintain temp. Don't know your exact situation but it may work or not depending on a lot of factors... do the numbers.

Well lets do this...

@ October 3, 2010 3:28 PM in How Do I Eliminate Radiator Vent Hiss

Go back to the beginning... What do you have? Boiler make , model, size. Main size, how many rads? System Age. Insulation... Pictures? Then see what we can do. Is it all rads or just a couple?

you are right...

allow an Oil boiler to share a flue w/ a atmospheric gas water heater? I was pretty sure it was ok if the water heater was after the boiler.... ty,kpc

the right adapter nuts. They are usually a seprate order. it would depend what you hook them up w/. I have installed a lot of these....including my own place.
I never end up using the lag bolts as I think its overkill, usually 2 1/2" deck screws.

As to the plugs that is a new one on me. I have nev had to deal w/ tose before..always come installed.

I heard through a reputable source that Grundfos is going to introduce a Mini verson of the Magna circ... It is like a Alpha but more of a 26-99 pump curve.
Anyone have an idea when this will hit the market?

Where in New England?

@ September 15, 2010 8:48 PM in What's the best oil boiler I can buy?

How was the boiler piped? in steel? Was it done in copper? Does it have a tankless coil or just for heat? Is the basement "dry" or wet a lot?
Something wierd is going on here..... Pictues of the boiler (w/ or w/o The hole showing would help us help you.
I have not used Burnham a lot for steam but I do wish I could do a Mega steam...
I prefer Smith and would try a Peerless too. Even still find out why it happens so you can do better this next time.

@ September 13, 2010 8:13 AM in build new house ....radiant heat?

If you went w/ baseboard sized to run at design say 0 deg. F. and w/ a max water temp of 150F you would be way ahead of the game if you went w/ a mod/con or a control package that takes into accnt for weather responsiveness.... kpc

measure out all the radiators to find the EDR? I am suspect when a steam boiler is talked of in terms of BTU vs. EDR.
Crown is actually a division of Burnham/ US boiler. Make sure he follows the installation instructions. References are also good.

The coil was the main issue which they will replace. Ask your plumber to run the serial #.

the other would be to reduce some of your near boiler piping down and then add TRV's (thermastatic radiator valves) to each rad. Run the piping off of 1  Alpha type pump (Grunfos or Wilo) and let it go.... kpc
