The Drum

@ March 4, 2010 8:18 PM in Classic North Jersey Install

The Drum oh that's picking up the condensate that rolls across the kitchen floor.
Do you think insulation would help?
Here is the Equlizer connection. Think I'll paint it black.
If you are new to steam this is not how to pipe your new boiler so keep reading.

Classic North Jersey Install

@ March 4, 2010 7:23 PM in Classic North Jersey Install

This is a job a looked at the other day. I wonder why water is coming out of every vent in the house when the unit runs???????? and all the radiator vents are in the top tapping and the bathroom has a key vent in it.

Has anyone seen

@ March 3, 2010 8:03 PM in Has anyone seen

Trying to find the EDR for this Convector can't seem to find it in Dans EDR book.
Anyone know where to find it?  Lost Art has a real close match but not the same as this .

Check

@ February 28, 2010 9:21 AM in Condensate Heating

I your 007 installed in the right direction?  What size supplyand return lines are hooked up to the Amtrol?

My thoughts

@ February 25, 2010 10:57 AM in Condensate Heating

My guess is your feed would be fine where it is but I would think you would be better off if the return was piped into a bottom boiler tapping or drain with a tee on the back of the boiler . You didn't mention any aquastat to maintain temp on the boiler do you have one?  Example Honeywell L4006

What ?

@ February 25, 2010 10:44 AM in Condensate Heating

I think you need to more specific here. I'm guessing you are asking about the piping to your side arm heater if it is correct or not.

Drop Headers

@ February 25, 2010 10:38 AM in Just how bad is this...

Take a look at some of the other threads here you will find some great examples of what your piping should look like.
And yes they do make a nipple kit for your boiler it will have everything you need to pipe as manufacture recommends for near boiler piping.

What ?

@ February 25, 2010 10:12 AM in Just how bad is this...

Not bad for gravity hot water system is it? ;-)
Or hay is that a dyslexic drop header?

Yes

@ February 25, 2010 9:41 AM in Mr Hall

This customer had her a/c contractor replace the boiler about 10 years ago there were a number of problems with this install incorrect near boiler piping the lowering of the water line and so on.
My guess is the boiler is one maybe two sections to large and I am sure  2 Gorton 2's would be a better setup than a #75 Hoffman .
But my company just comped about a Grand of piping work to this job thats enough for now.
There is just some things this owner is forced to live with unless they are willing to invest a lot more money. Very unfortunate this should have been done correctly Ten Years Ago.
Thanks For Your Input  Rich

Mr Hall

@ February 24, 2010 11:38 PM in Mr Hall

I thought you would like to hear this.
Two Pipe Bang is fixed :-)
The fix was not to raise the equalizer pipe running to the false water line but the removal of the equalizer to the false water line and the installation of a vapor-stat
As it turns out this is a vapor system it seems to be a cross between a Arco Model K and a Hoffman system.
The only trouble now is the system seems to short cycle but the burner is down fired as low as I can go so I will have to live with that for now.
Thanks Again for your help on this. Rich

55 Minutes

@ February 24, 2010 6:32 PM in I no longer cycle off on pressure!

55 Minutes of constant run time does not seem reasonable to me to raise your home 3-4 degrees.
You say Steamhead has seen your system My guess is you and he figured your EDR out what's it looking like as far as boiler size goes.
Great that you have new windows and insulation but you still have to be able to fill your radiators with steam.
I am having a hard time rapping my arms around the fact that in 1900 an Engineer designed your system to run at 3OZ of pressure. How did you arrive at that number.
What I am wondering  here is, is your short cycle caused by a boiler who's EDR is way to tall or is it being caused by your control settings or is your system actually condensing a full head of steam in one minute and having to run three to make up that steam. How does it run on a normal call for heat.
I am not trying to step on toes. I work in the fuel oil business and if I can learn somthing that can save my customers some money I will use it as this will help me keep accounts.

To much of a good thing

@ February 24, 2010 10:06 AM in I no longer cycle off on pressure!

At what point is low pressure reduced nozzle size and high co2 numbers to much of a good thing ?
It seems to me that matching a nozzle size to run your boiler at a steady pressure isn't the way to go yes it worked for him yesterday but by me it was 40 degrees outside what about tomorrow when it is 10degrees. Is his boiler going to run all day long to match his heat loss?
O2 and co2 are great as long as smoke is 0 has he checked smoke ?
Maybe things have changed but as I recall set back shouldn't be more than 10 degrees and you shouldn't under fire more than 10% on most boilers . Is 1.50 his recommended input or is he already under fired.
At what point is short cycle a matter of pressure or vapor control verses a matter of boiler sizing there has to be a trade off at some point I would think.
Just interested in your opinions.

I wonder

@ February 23, 2010 8:07 PM in I no longer cycle off on pressure!

If you had your pressure control set to turn on at .5 and shut off a 2. I wonder how long would your cycle times be.

Lets see

@ February 23, 2010 8:02 PM in I no longer cycle off on pressure!

1.20 nozzle burner on for 79 minutes = 1.58 gallons of fuel
1.35 nozzle off for 1 minute on for 3 = 59.25 minutes of run time = 1.35 gallons of fuel for 79 minutes
what do you think

There not air ducts

oops my mistake

@ February 23, 2010 1:09 PM in cracked refractory etc.

I thought you said you were inducing the draft my mistake. A Lynn chamber should work fine in your unit.

Any tester is better than no tester

Say by the look of your inspection door ( looks burnt) Is your proving switch working?

Yes

@ February 18, 2010 2:32 PM in Two Pipe Bang

Yes most of the noise is coming from the FWL now. I had it running the other day I didn't get the big bang from that return.

Yeah up all night

@ February 18, 2010 1:45 PM in Two Pipe Bang

Here is my plan
Install L408J1017 vaporstat it came yesturday.
Lower boiler water line to recommended level of 32.25"
Change to of false water line to close nipple
Maybe lower FWL closer to top of return piping (will see)
Raise Equlizer line to about 6' going to FWL
Install four G2 on the Dry return to help the short cycle
Lower the firing rate a little.
Thinking the Stat should Be about 2oz on and may 8-10 off to start
Any other ideas?

Everyone's fuel bill was high last month .  Sounds like your bill was a little higher $200 for a lot of nothing.  I am sure if you could be more specific as to what is wrong or what you think is wrong you will fine good answers at this site and in most cases you are talking about things you can do yourself. Knowledge is King and you have in front of you a site loaded with knowlegable people who are willing to help at no cost.

cant see why it would matter

@ February 17, 2010 8:13 PM in stop boiler overfill

Can't see why it would matter your just trying to stop the water from feeding.

Arco holy cow I will sell you a Timkin

@ February 17, 2010 7:52 PM in Burner shuts down prematurely

What primary safety are we talking about is the safety located on your flue pipe ?
Is the burner shutting off on safty or is it just shutting down after 5 min?
