I am in Gillette Wyo. Home Depot and the other plumbing supply stores in this area do not have barrier pex. Now, if I could black poly pipe - how many miles do you need? The CBM ( Coal Bed Methane ) industry here buries it by the mile.
Hydronic heat don't seem to be that popular around here.
more info.

Thanks for the information. As luck would have it, they're moving faster on the digging and forming that I planned.. I knew once they got started it would go like a wild fire.I did have a little forethought and bought enough 2" pink foam insulation to do under the entire slab, and 4' out from the edges.
A friend of mine just completed a project, and gave me about 500' of barrier PEX, the remainder will have to be non barrier. It's whats available on such short notice.
Another post I had, I was thinking about using that black PE tubing that's used for irrigation - but was convinced otherwise.
For temps, I was thinking just taking the chill off. One garage door, two man doors.
So far, just the floor is planned. After the floor is done, I'll have to wait till finances allow to build the building. But 2x6 walls, hopefully insulated as well.
Antifreeze, more than likely. There will probably be days or so where I won't want to run the heat - depends on availability of fuel ( planning on building a waste oil fired boiler ). Maybe coal, I am in Northeast Wyoming.
Thanks again for the info.

I am planning on putting in hydronic heated floor in my shop when it's built.. no dirt work yet, now is the time to do it.Without waiting for shipping - only available lengths of pex are in 100 ft rolls.
Should I wait and get longer spools or can the pex be successfully be spliced in the concrete??
I can do the crimp fittings if those will work. My main concern is the effect of the concrete on the brass / copper splice hardware.
Waterproof or otherwise insulate them, or just make several 100' heating loops.
One more question, total square footage is 1200' about how much tubing should I be looking at to purchase??
Thanks in advance
Robert Avery
gonna go with PEX..

Thanks for the quick replies.Just to play devil's advocate...
How much temperature are we talking? I couldn't picture much more than 100*F
How much pressure we talking? ... it works for sprinklers
If this wasn't such a large and expensive project ( for me.. ) i'd try it and see what happens.
But after thinking about it... I will be using PEX.
Radiant floor heat PEX or PE
@ June 8, 2010 6:47 PM in Radiant floor heat PEX or PE
Doing in-slab heat for a garage and driveway. While browsing the tubing section at my local Big Box store... they have landscaping black PE tubing in 500' rolls... a LOT cheaper than the PEX 100 foot rolls.I plan on running a home built, open to the atmosphere waste oil boiler anyway, so I am not too concerned with Oxygen
What harm or good would it do to run with the cheaper tubing?
My line of thinking is: It should work. The tubing is designed to be buried and live outdoors.
A quick search didn't pop up any answers.
Thanks
Robert Avery
