a little over three years ago i attended the nefi in watertown mass. i earned my oil burner technician certificate, and am now nora silver certified as i have been working in the field over three years. i want to further my education in the hvac field as i'm thinking about relocating, and the oil burner training is pretty much useless if someone is looking for ac technicians. who are the most recognized accrediting agencies in this field????? i want to attend a facility and earn a possible assoc degree but i want it to be from a legit school where my training will be recognized by the industry. could anyone give me some leads into the most recognized accred. agencies and some suggestions on a good tech school in maybe the nh or ma area?????would it be smarter to get a hvac cert or put in the 2 years and get the degree??? please help. i'm 42 years old, and due to the fantastic state of our economy, i want to better my education, so i'm not behind the counter when u order a coffee at dunkin doughnuts.

@ March 20, 2011 12:56 PM in proliphix internet based thermostats help

recently was at a customers home and they had purchased a proliphix imt 550 so they could remotely monitor their heating system,as its a second home. the heating system is just a basic airco hot air system, with an old style honeywell 8184g primary control, with a 2 wire thermostat wire.in the single stage wiring diagram it shows three wires rh,w,and g connected, will this thermo. work with this control???the therm side wiring showsthree connections rh,w1 and a common wire.i believe the common is to power the thermo.being that i have no exp. with these thermostats i figured i would post here and see if anyone has used one with this setup .i have included a file with the directions

????

@ January 28, 2011 8:56 AM in New boiler and a few questions

what kind of radiation do you have??????sounds like the system is air bound. i don't understand why you would hang the expansion tank in that position. i also don't see an air scoop or spirovent to scrub the air pockets out of the system.there is absolutely no reson why the boiler shouldn,t go past 120 deg. there is something wrong!!!!!get your contractors back out there.

john wood water heater gurgling sounds backflow problem help?????

@ January 27, 2011 12:01 PM in john wood water heater gurgling sounds backflow problem help?????

was servicing a new customers home today. they had concerns on a john wood oil fired hot water heater. when it runs and heats the water it has a gurgling, rushing noise very similar to an air bound boiler system. the cold water supply pipe felt hotter than the hot water out pipe.  upon looking at the piping arrangement i noticed that there was no vacuum relief valve installed on the heater . this heater is not on street pressure its running approx. 50 lbs of pressure at a pressurized  well tank its a stand alone heater, its not hooked to a boiler with a pump etc.  would it help to raise the tank pressure and install a vacuum relief valve such as a watts n-36 . does it also need some sort of check valve or would a vacuum relief valve prevent the siphoning. any help will be appreciated.

hot air furnace / heat exchanger repair flange????

@ September 10, 2010 4:41 PM in hot air furnace / heat exchanger repair flange????

was recently servicing a hot air furnace the stainless steel pipe that attaches to the flue pipe (this pipe is also welded to the heat exchanger) has holes rotted in it causing it to suck exhaust into the fan area and into the ductwork. is there a clamp on repair for this like two large clamps with metal to seal this area without repacing the heat exchanger

@ August 26, 2010 3:42 PM in wiring help/ amtrol water tank opus/taco relay

i have recently installed a new boiler the zone control is a taco though the name on it is opus this control will zone either zone valves or circulators.i have three zones plus the water tank all plumbed with circulators.i have the end switch on the relay attached to tt on a honeywell 7224u set to cold start . everything seems fine except the water heater zone keeps calling for heat . all my other zones work fine nd correctly according to amtrols directions my thermostat wire is hooked to tt on the zone control which it is am i missing something or is it wired incorrectly the tank is model ch-41zct has a built in thermostat on top of the tank with a apillary tube thanks in advance the opus control looks exactly like a regular taco switching relay except it can be wired for circ or zone valves
