@ November 27, 2011 9:44 PM in Please, check my work, vent questionI think you cannot have copper on steam system.
@ November 27, 2011 7:00 PM in PlumberThere is no zone 3 wiring on ultra. Boiler controls 3 pumps: DHW pump, boiler pump and system pump. if you want to have 2 zone system, please use 2 zone controller, wire boiler switch on zone controller into heating thermostat contacts, red on left 1 and 2. and do not wire any system pumps into boiler panel. And please, take time to read the manual
@ November 19, 2011 10:15 AM in new residential generator - defective controlwhy did not you consider installation of freewatt plus?
@ November 13, 2011 10:51 PM in Can smell gas when I run my new gas heaterbesides gas smell, barometric draft regulator must be installed with manual reset spill switch mounted on the bottom of draft regulator.
88% is too high, 80%-82% is ok. low exhaust temperature leads to condensation and low draft..
@ November 10, 2011 7:06 AM in Constant Circulation and WM Indirectregarding summer winter switch, your installer must activate and set warm weather shutdown function, and your boiler will work in auto without any winter summer switches
@ November 10, 2011 7:04 AM in Constant Circulation and WM Indirectif this is right installation, system pump must stop when domestic hot water call comes in. heating works on outdoor reset, domestic hot water on fixed temperature. , so, primary and system pump must be off on domestic hot water call.

@ November 8, 2011 8:02 PM in Can anybody identify this convector? This is manufacturer in Queens NY, just 25 min drive from my house. Go figure.
@ November 8, 2011 8:05 AM in Can anybody identify this convector? Was looking trough all internet searches and books, but no results. Thanks in advance.

@ October 30, 2011 9:25 PM in heat loss calculationsI m using HVAC-Calc with great success for years
@ October 30, 2011 9:19 PM in Has anyone had problems with Dunkirk Boilers?I deal with so called bad condensing boiler on regular basis, and still have to find one bad boiler. i did not read this tread completely, but i did serviced those boilers which was giving homeowners problems for years, and i always see on problem: unqualified technicians not reading manuals and not having proper tools, All those condensing boilers are marvels of boiler technology and fail due to poor installers.
@ October 29, 2011 8:21 PM in Installing outdoor reset thermistor in air intakeI was thinking about it , but never done it. I think, if sensor is installed right in the inlet fresh air elbow, it might work, is it will be in the shadow and read actual outdoor air temperature without influence of sun, walls, windows and others sources of heat..
@ October 28, 2011 9:02 PM in Boiler SizingNever size boiler by btu/sqf rule of thumb. these are rules of dumb. Use heat loss calculation by manual J only, do not forget include infiltration.
@ October 24, 2011 11:39 PM in Did I get what I paid for? P/S PipingI hope you did not pick your contractor for lowest bid. But you will have to pay somebody for removal of all this piping and electric. it is not only done wrong, but workmanship is below ground here as well.
@ October 15, 2011 11:44 AM in Wet Steam Vs Dry Steam:you have to follow manufacturer recommended piping arrangement to the letter. harford loop is a must on steam boiler, or you have to use steam separator, to remove water from steam. Steam leaving boiler always has carry over water in it, and this water must be removed.
@ October 15, 2011 4:48 AM in Coverting to gas - New boiler size question.Another way of sizing the boiler is trough heating degree day.
It actually gives you input for old boiler you actually used, and then you do efficiency improvement correction factor and arrive to proper size. When i get boiler size 4 times smaller then existing boiler, i do this and usually a m spot on with less then 5% difference.. do not forget pickup factor, as HDD is reflecting more steady state operation.
@ July 9, 2011 9:29 AM in High Efficiency mod/con or natural draft? It seems that there is a confusion in terms, AFUE is meaningless number. During my combustion tests, i get around 88-89% combustion efficiency on mod con boilers, and if it is condensing fully or partially, from 3 to 11% additional efficiency due to latent heat of vapor condensation in exhaust gases. The key is in the whole system setup, not a boiler efficiency. Put properly sized and installed mod con boiler in cruise control mode(city and highway mpg in cars as an analogy), and you will cut heating bill 50% and up. (way up)
@ July 9, 2011 8:58 AM in High Efficiency mod/con or natural draft?I cannot agree to that. I would say, the companies which will keep ignoring mod/con market will go away , and new companies, which will accept products customers want, and its service requirements, will make good. Progress cannot be stopped.
@ January 30, 2011 10:16 PM in Gas hot water tank instead of boiler????Well, i meant instantaneous water heater, and also i meant it is possible, but it is not right thing to do. I would never advise to customer to do it,but i'v seen it done and it works just fine in radiant heat application. Of course local regulations must be followed.
@ January 27, 2011 11:36 PM in Signs of condensation in and around boiler - Concerning?your boiler probably condense at start. when return temperature of water from heating system drops below 132F. to eliminate this you might install bypass or primary secondary loop arrangement
