@ January 31, 2014 6:41 PM in Oil to Gas Conversion Efficiency

You loose a couple of % points in efficiency BUT what is the % difference in the fuels being used?

No real reason to replace it.

I would check with Midco to see if parts are still available

Does not change the fact that the near boiler piping is wrong. Get that fixed. Really no need to prolong the discussion.

Temporary

@ December 31, 2013 4:36 PM in first time steam owner

They sell hinged repair clamps for various size pipe, they are metal & have a rubber inside liner. Place the rubber over the leak & tighten the nuts.

Quiet

@ December 31, 2013 12:02 PM in Is Carlin EZ 1 Steam Gas Conversion worth $$$$

My EZ Gas is A LOT quieter than the old Beckett oil gun.
I installed myself back in Oct. & so far very impressed with both noise level & operating cost.
I don't have a cover on mine BUT if I did I think it would all but eliminate any noise.
I have around $4000 invested which included running the gas supply piping, rebuilding with a drop header, aluminum liner, installing real main vents, replacing all radiator vents & insulating pipes as necessary.
I believe this to be a advanced DIY project BUT knowledge & research are key.
I spent alot of time here (thanks all!), Bought Dans trilogy on steam & took a adult continuing education 10 week boiler class, bought & learned how to use a Dwyer digital manometer & old school Bacharach combustion effieciency tester.
Cheers,

Leak

@ December 31, 2013 11:53 AM in first time steam owner

OK that leak is causing more water loss than you think & the make up water's oxygen is slowly killing your boiler.
I would suggest shutting down/draining, flushing your returns & fixing that leak NOW as opposed to spring.
I don't see any MAIN vents either?

Dirty?

@ December 31, 2013 11:10 AM in HB Smith Series 8 S/W 5 and Carlin 99FRD Incompatability?

Are they cleaning the breech of the Chimney?  The chimney or liner maybe dirty or clogged...
My former service provider NEVER vacuumed the things they said they did!!!
Good Luck!

turn the vent

@ December 19, 2013 10:23 AM in Radiator won't turn off

use a wet towel to avoid getting burnt grasp the vent on the end of the radiator & turn it upside down, this effectively turns "off" the radiator better than any other method.

Never mind!

@ December 15, 2013 12:07 AM in Carlin EZ gas going on lock up

Thanks steam head for the fast reply.

I think the processor was retarded for a bit.

I turned the power off for awhile & when I turned it back on it was back to normal, all is good & we are making steam!

Thanks again!

Carlin EZ gas going on lock up

@ December 14, 2013 11:02 PM in Carlin EZ gas going on lock up

OK installed & converted from oil back in early Oct. everything has been running fine until today. Today I broke into the one return to install purge valves at both the boiler end & at the main end and flushed tons of mud. After I was done skimming, turned the boiler on & the primary control LEDs went nuts green, amber, red flashing. Eventually settled down to amber purge fan on for 15 seconds flame established for 15 seconds & then would abruptly shut off & go into solid red lockup! Thoughts? Getting the two fireplaces burning going to get cold tonight!

TIA,

Coop
