@ February 28, 2003 1:21 PM in wasdis?

i've seen these adboned in older homes also very simalar they used to fire with coal and the pipes connected to a very large storage tank the boiler heated the tank by gravity and gave them domestic hot water .seen them with old texaco oil burners also hooked up to some huge storage tanks over 500 gallons ya got to see it to believe it

@ February 28, 2003 1:04 PM in Radiant Floor Heat Loss Calcs.

it's because of radiants lower water temp requirments compared to baseboard and raditors at 180 to radiant's max. of 120. also radiant adds heat in a more even manner to tthe lose.as for electric boilers i am unfamilar with them i hope i answered your question some what good luck

@ February 28, 2003 12:57 PM in monitor products D.V. boilers gas and oil

doug i was wondering what type of burner comes with them they don't seem to outline that also as steve posted with the low stack temp and acid formation are these units short lived as everyone knows we live in a disposalable world but if the unit lastes 10 years with your standard servicing at the level of eff. i believe that comsumers wouldn't mind i mean everybody leases a new car ever 3 years but why is it that something that sets quite and delivers comfort should never be replaced and last forever.i know down deep everybody cheap save a penny while blowing the wade on fuel i just wonder when high eff will be the standard and all will have to comply just for fuel ecom. and the sake of the planet or is it as usual they just feed us a little at time to keep the money rolling into stockholders and big busssness's pockets sorry for ranting off thanks for the input

direct vent gas and oil boilers by monitor prod.

@ February 26, 2003 8:48 AM in monitor products D.V. boilers gas and oil

seen info on and wondering if any one has used also on the oil fired unit .how's the burner and who is the manafactor of the gun they kinda leave that out in the literture also has anyone ventsd these units through 2 pipe through roof hooking up to existingpvc flue and it's a condo small mech.rm. old unit is extremly loud hydropluse they are loud and the mech rm. is central to the living area thanks

i don't know

@ February 24, 2003 8:47 AM in Trane Steam U/V's

but by chance did you ever see the old valve.i had seen pnuematic valae that as the condensate stacked it would modalate the supply valae to a closed position.as the condensate cooled the element and it contraced it would bleed air out of the pneumatic line feeding the sopply valve and as steam entered the trap and closer the supply valve would open it also had a check valve on it to.i've done some steam unit heaters in the past .modine units and we usally used f and t traps with a check valve on the outlet.i believe there's a formula for sizing the check valve i'de have to lok it's been a while.check a hoffman manual it might be helpful

@ February 21, 2003 10:40 AM in tying two furnaces together

i've done this before usally i'll make a duct 10 x30 heavy gauge sit the units on it with internal angle supports and pull return from the bottom then just bring the existing return into it.it usally work well because the new units are only 40 inches high i also do it for all my furnaces with over a 4 ton blower.i've also used 2 a coils and staged the cooling .never make the duct less then 10 inches your indoor fan may go off on temp.this also makes sure your unit gets enough return on larger unit direction tell to cut out both returns.the return base is alot easier and keeps the job neat

high price hard sale?

@ February 20, 2003 4:57 PM in $$ high efficiency who buying?

just wondering out loud? i see alot of ads for the stuff but with the price tags and on most you may have to add a secondary pump i don't see many out there.don't get me wrong i'd love to be putting them in and saving people money on flue, but with most your lucky to get them to replace the old hunk of junk no less get something with newer techology and higher efficieny but in some cases it can't be done because of building limitations.it's hard to do sweet stuff with and have to add $2000. or more for the boiler and re-venting the unit and extras.p.s. i know over time they save some coin but even so it's still a hard sale but if fuel cost what it does in europe i think it would differ?

flue condensation

@ February 8, 2003 10:39 AM in flue condensation

wondering everybody seems to use electric ingitions over standing pilots.have they like myself seen flue damage from condesation. this is on clay lined systems and chimmey on the outside walls on these jobs i go with standing pilots or line the chimmey i rarely see any thing in equip. instruction sheets giving info. on and most suppliers look at me if i where insane when i bring the nsubject up. what does everybody leave it to a chimmey guy.i seem to be the only one who notices it.am i insane

@ February 8, 2003 10:24 AM in Tankless Water Heater As Boiler

i've use indirect hot water tanks on radint loops and they worked well i've also seen and done 1 or 2 systems with d.h.w. heaters and never had a promblem your right about stand by lose that why on a small job a preferr a indirect alot depends on the amount of coin.plus with a inderict you can put a reset controller in the future good luck

d.h.w.tank

@ February 8, 2003 10:16 AM in Did my water heater blow up???

i've never seen that but i've seen the sides of tanks rupture.i don't know if it's code but i usally always install a domestic water water expansion tank on most jobs, because of thermal expansion i believe tanks are not made as well as years ago plus most houses have p.r.v. on the water mains or water meters with backflow devices or volume rest. a few years ago i saw the same promblem with indirect tanks sides splitting on alot of unitsthe cause of witch was all thermal expansion.my bosses did not believe me untill the tank i installed ruptured the next day in disbelief they sent someone else to install yet another tank that nite that tank ruptured .the next day i went back installed another tank with a portable expansion tank and that was it.now all hot water tank i do get a portable expansion and if the people don't go for it i let someone else do the job and deal with voiding the warranty in the instruction they write about this but who reads them anyway that my 2 cents worth

high domestic water use

@ January 30, 2003 9:24 AM in Add capacity for indirect

besides extra storage tanks what can be done for high volumewater use like oversized tubs that do about 12 to 15 g.p.m.the only thing thats worked for me with inderect h.w.t. is to add a plate exchanger with a mixing valve on the outlet of the tank.would like to hear other opitions?

euro made in france

@ January 30, 2003 8:35 AM in ...never any mention of this euro boiler...

i've seen these in nurmberg about 5 years nice unit but all the european boiler are really nice a bit more money than americans are used to spending but they spend more on fuel and reasearch and development than american companies.they really put thought into there systems like flue condensationreset controller and effect on flue gases condensation.unlike us who put in spark ingition and leave a flue liner to someone else unlike europeans and i know about direct venting is the solution right alot of really good boilers are out there but if outside the boiler is not done correctly the effenecy of a boiler is in vain like europes strict insulatoin codes on heating pipes no foam insulation there just high denisty glass it's a super hard sale here price seems to dictate everything here try buderus hydronic systems saw alot of them in germany and most of the heating guys like them over vissman and they where priced a little friendler

hydronic heating

@ January 26, 2003 11:35 PM in zone values on supplyw/system by pass and sepreate pump for ind

anybody out there try zone valves on the supply with system by pass[manual or p.d.v.] on oil with dual aquastat controller and seperate pump for indirect domestic water.you'll need flow valves on supply and return for the tank to prevent overheating . on heat side the bypass has some great plusescombined with the dual aquastat controller, like the pump really doesn't cycleon call for heat even with cold returns because of the systems by passand your boiler stays pretty clean from never dropping down below min.temp.about155 on most if not all the jobs i do this way there is a fuel reductionno lag in domestic waterand quicker heating response plus the boiler stay cleaner and never condense it's a cheap trick that i've seen the germans do with 3 way valvesbut alot cheaper.i would love to hear some comments from the true guru of hoodoo himself i really never seen anybody do this i do and everybody looks at it smiles and as far as i know there's really no service promblems the guys say year after year that these boiler are amazingly clean and only need a minor brushing and all the custermers have use less fuel then before thanks for such a great site that truely make me feel the good work makes up for all the bad out thereand to dan thanks for all the information and insight to make mech. realize that what you do is a time continal to all the dead guys clammy
