Ed Kennedy, ohh sorry that's hot air. hehe

All I wanna know is..

@ March 16, 2005 1:39 PM in cast iron radiators for sale

who's the bonehead that took'em out??????????? and probably replaced 'em with baseboard?? hope you did a heat loss calc!

It might have great draft

@ March 15, 2005 11:20 AM in Pilot goes out

when you're in the room with the door open, try and simulate real world situations, are there any other pieces of equipment in the room or building that may run intermittently??? Blowers, exhaust fans, etc??? Make sure you've got CO detectors in the building. Is the chimney built right?? Can it be getting downdrafts at times ??????????

@ March 14, 2005 11:24 AM in Why this site is great for a Homeowner

for me, as I don't believe in giving away info that would take my job away but do believe in helping others, from what you gents say it would seem that more tech's need to get their heads out of their butts and read some if not all of Dans books. Some techs walk in to a home, look at a steam system and say you need to switch to hot water baseboard. It would seem that some homeowners know more about steam than some of the tech's.

@ March 14, 2005 9:34 AM in I don't like Chimps anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

many moons ago actually my neighbors had a chimp, helping my buddy with his paper route we stopped there to collect money and she let the chimp come onto the porch to meet us, as we sat on the bench he bounced around us and then suddenly ripped my buddies hat off, opened his mouth REAL WIDE and swallowed his head, placing his teeth above each ear and squeezed just enough to let my bud know that he could squash his head like a grape. I decided on that day that monkeys weren't so cute after all.

@ March 11, 2005 11:26 AM in Tripple Aqustat

no offense but from what you are saying you are in trouble, call in a pro.

@ March 11, 2005 11:22 AM in Heating Inspection Today

gravity went out 60yrs ago? Is the inspection by your agent, theirs or by an independant source like an oil company trying for your biz?? Unfortunately I have found that inspections that are tied to real estate agents are lame, "don't blow the sale" they recommend things or say they probably have more life in them or seem to be ok. If it does run technically there is nothing wrong with it, other than it's outdated and should be replaced. Please reply with what you find out or what they say, it could be interesting.

something doesn't sound right

@ March 11, 2005 11:11 AM in 40 Gallon Amtrol Boilermate

is the circ running??? you could have a problem with the piping too, maybe it's time to call in a professional?? I had one once where the people had city water at 120psi, in the winter that is also usually about air temp and the guy had a shower head from the thirties that took your skin off do the math water - 120 psi water - 20*f in shower head 10gpm = no hot water with this set up call a professional, you're shooting in the dark.

too many people

@ March 9, 2005 11:23 AM in Germany moving towards 100% renewable energy

on the planet, that's our only problem. Biofuels an especially biodiesel are what I want to see more of. Diesels that run on this stuff have almost 0 emmissions, at the same time many cities are forcing bus co's to install catalytic converters when all they have to do is switch to biodiesel, duhhhh. Willy Nelson is even getting into it.

rube goldberg??

@ March 9, 2005 11:16 AM in Single pipe system holds water on top floor

I thought he was dead?? Dunno, picturing this in my mind I can't see how it would work, has it ever worked?? how long was it piped like this?? it should be banging some too, wish I could help, I think it needs to be repiped to 2 pipe.

Good question

@ March 4, 2005 11:11 AM in The Titanic boilers

All I could find was this, can't find any info on the manufacturer???? Are you sure that is the right name?? Boilers. All the boilers were 15 ft. 9 in. in diameter, the 24 double-ended boilers being 20 ft. long, and the single-ended 11 ft. 9 in. long. Each double-ended boiler had six, and each single-ended boiler three furnaces, with a total heating surface of 144,142 sq. ft. and a grate surface of 3,466 sq. ft. The boilers were constructed in accordance with the rules of the Board of Trade for a working pressure of 215 lb. per sq. in. They were arranged for working under natural draught, assisted by fans, which blew air into the open stokehold.

@ March 3, 2005 11:07 AM in Hartford Loop

if memory serves minimum is 1 1/2 below and that section between your return and loop with the union in it, that should be a close nipple or as short to that as you can get.

@ March 1, 2005 2:17 PM in Home Depot Threat?

this is a letter I found from the North Carolina Board of Examiners to State Rep's and Senators about this, I won't reprint here unless Dan ok's but I think, no I promise you will find it interesting.

speed is just a question of money

@ March 1, 2005 11:20 AM in HYDRO AIR VS WARM AIR FURNACE

how fast do you want to go?? how good of a system do you want?? what you have recommended is better and is right, for what a new home costs today $250-500,000 dollars you should be able to get a decent system, the a/c system is the heart of the home, not the kitchen , baths or closets, what good is a $$$$$ home that you're not comfortable in????????????????

any new equipment

@ March 1, 2005 11:14 AM in Boiler Maintenance Timing

gas or oil should run clean, gas is usually very clean but the newer oil equipment should run about as clean if set up right. Some in the trade have a mental block that oil is sooty and they don't even set for 0 smoke. If your unit is cleaned in April it will only run for H/W over the summer and should still be clean and ready to go in the fall

this is one of the new hi eff elec heaters

@ March 1, 2005 11:05 AM in Home Depot Threat?

they have found that by melting the wires to the cabinet the h/w output is increased 75% 1st hour rating and 50% after that, this also keeps the homeowner from playing with the unit. In this configuration it is recommended to install an additional relief valve in the cold water inlet. nyuk nyuk

@ March 1, 2005 9:47 AM in Improper Boiler install (pictures)

have you checked the pressuretrol setting yet? try lowering the differential all the way and lower the setting to 1 or less if you can still get heat out, that should calm it down for now, it probably needs to be skimmed too, all of this is in the aforementioned books and most should be in the installation manual that came with the boiler. get the reps out there too, trust me the factory wants their equipment installed and running right.

the criss-cross pattern

@ March 1, 2005 9:37 AM in Do you want to see something stupid?

of the tape applique is extraordinaire, they also used the creases in the middle for balancing the flow, truly a complete custom piping job. I agree with the previous post, probably the floor guys or a carpenter, I used to find alot of that with pneumatic control lines.

That is very bad sign

@ February 28, 2005 11:23 AM in Improper Boiler install (pictures)

sorry to see your situation. all are right, it needs repipe asap, can't really add to what's been said 'cept to say yuk, water is probably getting into your header and banging violently, see if you can lower the pressuretrol to 1-1.5 max or less, as low as possible may help if you can get heat set like that till repaired. good luck

ah yes, the bucket of steam

@ February 28, 2005 11:14 AM in Apprentic training on the job

my father used to teach too, one day he sent a student on a mission,{ the ones standing around with their hands in their pockets usually got these missions, pipe stretchers, etc..}, the mission today was the bucket of steam, go down to the heating lab and get a bucket of steam, low and behold he returned 20 minutes later with A BUCKET OF STEAM! what he did was get some dry ice and put it in a bucket to goof on my fathers head!
