Fuel

@ June 25, 2010 1:16 PM in rinniai issues

Are you even sure it is using the right fuel?

PVC falure

@ November 15, 2009 11:30 AM in Condensing Boilers & PVC Exhaust

I have seen PVC fail in the Heatmakers when the heat exchanger starts to plug and cannot absorb the temperature.  The pvc over heats and cracks.
I have checked the flue temperature's on allot of boilers that the exhaust side pvc is discolored.  If was a concern that I would have a potential failure however the boilers were all in line even though the exhaust pipe was darker.

Same for near boiler and silver pex, it always seems a little discolored.

@ September 22, 2009 4:33 PM in Sprinters

I have a 12 box truck now and a standard wheel base high roof sprinter.
Was looking for a long duel wheeled sprinter with now windows but cant find one.
Anyone using the long single wheel sprinter, how is it going and can you easily keep it under the 9600 gvw limit

Trying to get a sprinter fixed

@ July 13, 2009 9:15 PM in Sprinters in eastern mass

We have a 2007 sprinter, unfortunately there are only 3 places left to service them in south east mass. The dealer in Norwood took the sprinter in for an occasional not start problem. For the 4th time. This was a scheduled appointment. After they got the truck they said four days worth of work. They got the truck on Friday, it is now Monday and they have not touched it. Due to lift and mechanic unavailability's. We are a two man shop 50% of our capasity is down. Would you buy another sprinter after this. Blue wrench

@ July 10, 2009 9:20 PM in How do you remove air plugs from old cast-iron steam rads?

Heat them with a torch to expand them, then they cool and come out easy as pie. Soaking in penetrating oil for a while is a good second. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Both

@ July 5, 2009 3:19 PM in Tape or Pipe Dope

If it is not a natural gas line, I put the dope on the male end first so it does not come off with the tape. Then I make one wrap around with the tape. Old day's dope then wicking. I like the T2 Teflon past since it is easier cleanup than regular rectorseal, tough threads I use the traditional rectorseal since it seals better. Real tough threads I use a coated wicking. Ram bits

@ July 2, 2009 9:46 AM in Can PVC fittings be taken apart?

We use ram bits, our trucks carry 1.5 to 3" in the truck. We cut the pipe flush to the hub and drill the rest out. You have to work the bit back and forth and a little in reverse but it does a good job. The bits appear to last indefinitely. One trick is to cut the shaft short and put a flat spot on it with a grinder or file. It lets you get in tighter. Make sure you have a good 1/2" drill, variable speed with a handle on it. all the burner and boiler know

@ June 30, 2009 10:46 PM in Economite burner ?

is draft, it is up to the power venter mfg, like fields controls, you install the venter per mfg specks. You can mount the venter at the termination point on the wall and even run single wall vent pipe back to the breach as long as you are staying in the same room since you are creating a negative pressure in it no special sealing is required. What type of flue pip do you have

@ June 29, 2009 9:20 AM in Weil Mclain gv-5 ignition problems

Some older model GV's had plastic venting that is in recall. You should be venting in stainless. The GV's are known to plug over time. and need to be cleaned the best as possible. Some of the early GV's have a bypass valve that sticks reducing temperature output. I doubt this is causing your ignition problem. Myself I am a fan on good old gravity venting cast iron boilers or I go strait to mod con's. Sealed cast iron always seems to be a compromise and a pain to service. How did you reverse the flow

@ June 28, 2009 2:11 PM in Gas boiler shuddering and ticking

do you have zone valves, if they are in backwards they can cause water hammer. Did you reverse the flow through the boiler, if so you now have cooler water coming in were the aqua-stat is so the boiler is reading the wrong temperature. Did you do the work yourself or hire a contractor. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Ultra vs the rest

@ June 26, 2009 8:17 PM in Need honest gas boiler advice

You may be able to get more tax rebates and other insentives with the ultra. GV's and similar sealed cast iron direct vent boilers are low tech but prone to some of the same problems of high tech boilers. The ultra vents in pvc so you save on stainless venting. You can telescope an ultra vent and if the curve is set right you may get some added savings. I find working on the ultra allot easier than a GV or sealed CG boiler. If you can

@ June 26, 2009 8:01 AM in Heating Dilemma

locate all the drops from the radiators individually. Then install a mod con boiler. Zone the house into smaller sections by floor and then by common living areas. Cast iron should work great on lower reset temperatures. Zoning cuts fuel bill more and also helps take care of balance issues. Typically the cast iron is over sized to begin with, however you should do a formal heat loss to make sure. Insulate and seal everything you can. Use the AC as a stand alone system. If you need humidity that can be stand alone also and don't go cheap unless you want to use disposable room units. We have done several jobs with old fashion looking cast iron radiators throughout the house. But total hi tech mod cons in the boiler room and they work great. Jurisdiction

@ June 23, 2009 6:30 PM in Expert Witnesses

If it is anything like Mass, the building department only cares about, fuel, electrical, venting and the water connection. Anything else about heat they have nothing to do with. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Contractor history

@ June 21, 2009 2:22 PM in Expert Witnesses

Over the 20 years in business I have dealt with a lot of contractors that are men of there word and it has always been enough. Even when things go a stray, they pay there bill and work things out. I have had contractors I got a signed contract, deposit check and found the check came back as I was finishing the project. I have had these people in hand cuffs in front of a judge for no avail. I have found a common thread, if they have a history of not paying people and going through subs you are likely to get screwed. If there subs have been working with them for a long time and only small turn over you should be OK. As to not going to court, I will try to resolve and issue first. I will not walk away from money that is rightly mine. I will go to court and fight to the end for what I fully believe I deserve. There have been one or two occasions the cards on a project did not fall right. A little of everyone's fault and on those very rear occasions have decided to take my lumps and walk away. just my $.02 To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Proof

@ June 21, 2009 9:44 AM in Expert Witnesses

The question is does the system work. In heat there are sometimes so many ways to approach the issue that it almost falls to opinion. The end proof is does the system work to the home owners comfort level. You should get a manufacturers rep to give there opinion since they may be a more neutral party. In court only the lawyers make money, its no win at this point all you can do is cut losses. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Cellar heat

@ May 23, 2009 10:24 AM in basement heat running pipes down circulation problems?

circulation is not a problem depending on attached load. However it should be a dedicated loop off the boiler for proper control and comfort. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

@ April 22, 2009 6:29 PM in Steam Boilers, when do you go to the \"next size up\"?

281 is less than 296 so you go to the next one up to fill all the radiation with steam. I doubt your calculations are taking pipe and pickup into account. I would like to see how a conventional gas fired package boiler can be down fired. I have seen logs removed but it's never been sanctioned by the manufacturer. Gas pressure is typically 3.5" for natural on the manifold and other than using a combustion analizer to set it, if you decrease fuel pressure you change the quality of the flame.
