Water heater out of warranty?!

@ March 10, 2013 12:15 PM in Water heater out of warranty?!

We just got a call from a job where we put in a Bosch/Ariston GL8TI, 8-gallon POU water heater because it's dead. It seems they only had it powered for the health department inspection they have once a year and now it's dead. The supply house says that it's not covered under warranty because it was not powered the whole time!? They said that any heater will die prematurely if it's not kept hot?! Am I missing the boat?! What's the difference if it's powered or not??? It sounds insane to me.
Thanks, Adam

We had two OCS recessed rads leak within weeks of installation. Bad castings on both. They were horrible to deal with regarding warranty. Buyer beware.

@ February 7, 2013 9:27 AM in Job pics!

Just to address several of the comments: The job is only one baseboard zone and the indirect, the factory was consulted regarding no primary/secondary, no problem. The pic of the new install was taken before insulating the pipes, removing the old vent piping (there's a foot of snow on the roof) and installing the copper extensions on the T&P valves, also, no pressure or air issues given expansion tank location. There is a backflow preventer (bottom left)! For the record, this is the first time ever that I didn't do primary/secondary piping. I only did it because the homeowner didn't want to pay for it and the factory gave their blessing. If I hadn't "cut that corner" the homeowner would've preferred an atmospheric/cast iron boiler and conventional water heater. That would've pained me with the potential LP fuel consumption. Just my thoughts.

Agreed! I also insulated the pipes after that pic. Cleaning up the boiler room is never fun, but the TT purring in the background makes it bearable!

Hi Wallies,

Just before and after pics of a dead Glowcore and leaking Delta indirect that we replaced with a TT 110 LP and a Smart40. They're in a vacation home so we also put in a new Honeywell WiFi thermostat for remote control and monitoring of temperature. We also had a relay installed on the alarm system that automatically activates the indirect when the alarm is disarmed and shuts it down when the alarm is armed. Please forgive the old Spirovent. The owner didn't want to pay for a new one!? Whatever.

@ January 13, 2013 5:35 PM in Trimax / DHW question

It's a vacation house. He can already turn the heat up and down with a new Honeywell Wifi stat we put in and he wants to be able to remotely control the indirect as well. He lends the house out a lot and wants to be able to shut down the indirect if no one will be using the house for a few weeks.

Thanks, Adam

Trimax / DHW question

@ January 13, 2013 11:38 AM in Trimax / DHW question

I have a job with a TT 110 with Trimax control and a Smart 40 indirect. I'd like to install the optional sensor in the indirect and remove the aquastat but I have a challenge. The homeowner wants to remotely control the indirect with a pair of dry contacts. I used to just interrupt the aquastat for that purpose but suspect that interrupting the optional sensor will cause a lockout. I'd rather use the sensor because it gives more accurate control of the indirect temperature. Any ideas?

Thanks, Adam

@ December 25, 2012 10:10 PM in Bypass valve?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response. I've never used a bypass valve. I always pipe P/S. The manual however shows a bypass valve both ways, straight through and with P/S!? I guess I'll call TT tomorrow to see if it can be left out. Kindly let me know if you have any other thoughts.

Thanks again, Adam

Me too!

@ December 25, 2012 8:06 PM in End switch failure on ZVC controller - twice

First off let me say that I'm a diehard Taco fan and user. I had a service call at the beginning of this season where a zone of radiators wasn't heating. The zone valve was open, both the yellow and red LEDs were lit on the ZVC406 but the boiler wasn't firing. I tested the end switches of the zone valve in question and nothing! I swapped out the head and everything worked?!?! I forgot to call Taco after but would love Joe to take a stab! Curious why if end switch not making that the red LED would be lit? Best of luck, Adam

TT Prestige, 110, N/G

@ December 25, 2012 6:08 PM in TT Prestige, 110, N/G

Hi Wallies,

We are located in North Jersey and have a brand new TT Prestige, 110, N/G in the box from last season that we won't be able to use. It is with the MCBA control (pre Trimax). The job was for LP and someone on our end made a booboo! Almost all of our boiler jobs are bigger and I don't want it to sit any longer. I'm willing to sell it at a reasonable loss. We paid about $3000.00 for it. Make me a reasonable offer. Our mistake is your gain.

Thanks for looking,
Adam

Bypass valve?

@ December 25, 2012 5:55 PM in Bypass valve?

Happy Holidays Wallies! Quick question! I was reading the I&O manual for the new TT Prestige with Trimax control. It has a diagram for piping with zone valves and shows a bypass valve at the end. My two baseboard zones go out and back in 3/4" copper and the piping from the boiler would be 1" without primary/secondary. Will a 3/4" bypass valve be sufficient at the ends of the manifold to give the boiler enough flow?

Thanks, Adam

TT Prestige 110 exhaust

@ December 4, 2012 5:45 PM in TT Prestige 110 exhaust

I'm under the impression that you can run 2" exhaust and fresh air intake on the Prestige 110. I have a 24' horizontal run. Anyone done this? Any specifics I need to know?

@ November 18, 2012 10:17 PM in Steam help!

Thanks guys! System set at approximately 1/2 pound pressure with differential set to 1. There are two GORTON #1 vents. As mentioned, I didn't change them but they seemed to be OK. Mains are each 2" and each are about 35' long.

Steam help!

@ November 18, 2012 9:54 PM in Steam help!

Hi Wallies,
We cleaned up an old steam system last week where only the first floor rads were getting hot and the second floor was barely warm. We thoroughly cleaned the boiler, sight glass, pigtail, pressuretrol, pressure gauge, and changed all of the rad vents to vari-vents. We closed the downstairs ones and left the upstairs ones open. It worked great last week but now the HO is saying nothing is getting hot upstairs!? We didn't change the two main vents because they seemed to be working. Any ideas?!?!?!?
Thanks, Adam

RAM SPARK MODULE!?!?

@ November 15, 2012 3:49 PM in RAM SPARK MODULE!?!?

Hi Wallies,

I have a DOA Glowcore boiler with a RAM Electronics 3M8-03 spark ignition that attempts to fire several times then the LED gives a double-blink every few seconds. Any idea what that means? I've tried ROBERTSHAW tech support but they can't even find anything on that module. HELP!?!?

Thanks, Adam

OT! Air Handler

@ October 15, 2012 9:13 PM in OT! Air Handler

Hi Wallies,

What would cause a condenser contactor to click on for ten seconds, off for ten seconds, repeatedly on a call for AC? A friend of mine just called me with this. I figured I'd check the stat wiring first then the blower motor board. Anything I might be missing?

Thanks in advance, Adam

Here ya go!

@ March 27, 2012 7:26 PM in Triangle Tube Trimax

Thank you all for the responses! Beautiful job Brian! Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the new control I can have a 160* zone for copper bb and another 120* zone for radiant without a mixing valve? I'd just need two circs?

Hi Wallies, has anyone used the new Triangle Tube boiler with the Trimax control? Would you mind giving some feedback?

Thanks, Adam

@ March 3, 2012 10:58 PM in Gas piping outside?

I disagree!!!!!!!! Weber natural gas grills come with a quick connect coupling that has 3/8" threads, not 1/2". Call Weber and they'll tell you: 800-466-1071
