@ May 13, 2007 5:00 PM in water temps and hydro air

I am a moron when it comes to computers, so I don't know how to post a link, but the site is fanhandler.com. I have not used the fan handler yet, but I have used thier head pressure controllers with success. There is a lot of good info on the site.

Fan Handler

@ May 11, 2007 11:47 AM in water temps and hydro air

I have job coming up that I plan to use a heat pump with hydro coil for back up. I plan to use a standard non ecm air handler with a Fan Handler control. This thing is pretty cool, it modulates standard psc motors with a sensor located in the supply duct. So with outdoor reset the airhandler will always supply the same temperature air (lower water temp= lower fan speed). The control works the same way for AC by lowering fan speed to control the latent load, then the fan speed increases when latent is under control.

Dan is the man!

@ May 8, 2007 5:34 PM in Munchkin

I agree, I have called Dan many times with questions and he always has an answer. Not much he hasn't seen. Also I am not saying Htp hasn't had there problems, but I have been to many jobs that are not installed correctly. Now that I think about it most of the boilers I see installed round here are not installed correctly. Reading the directions will save a lot of headaches.

Vision 2

@ May 5, 2007 10:09 AM in How smart is the Knight?

Have any of you guys tried the Munchkin Vision 2 controls for an application like this? I've always wanted to try it, but the chance hasn't come up yet. Of course I think it only works with the Munchkins and probably not the Knight?

@ April 20, 2007 9:14 AM in Cargo van break-ins

I had no idea how easy it is to get in these vans until I locked my keys inside. I managed to get in the back door of my 03 E350 in about ten minutes without breaking anything. Just imagine what a thief could do.

Wintac

@ January 8, 2007 10:49 AM in Any software programs for 2 man HVAC company?

Just wondering what you heard about Wintac. I have been looking at buying Wintac Pro for tracking equipment, warranties, pma's, and generating mailing lists. It seems like a pretty cool program for the price, but now you've got me wondering.

T-80 or 80M

@ October 2, 2006 5:43 PM in mod/con sizing

I think the "T" models are the only ones that do this. The standard "M" models do not.

T-50

@ October 2, 2006 5:32 PM in mod/con sizing

The T-50 actually ramps up to 80,000btu for domestic hot water heating with the Vision 1 control. Also, the T-80 goes up to 100,000btu for hot water.

heat loss calcs

@ September 12, 2006 6:01 PM in Heat Loss Analysis - Is it Necessary?

Hey guys, just out of curiosity how do you do your heat loss calcs? Laptop, by hand, or back at the office? Currently I measure the structure and do the calcs back at the office. It's kind of a pain and I've been contemplating getting a laptop and doing the calculations at the customers house. Thanks, Nick S.

60 BTU/SQ.FT?

@ September 12, 2006 12:54 PM in Vitoden 200 8-32 or Solo 110or175 Boiler

What is your design temp? Your heat loss sounds pretty high for a 1860 sq. ft ranch, even if your design temp is -40*. I could be wrong, but you may want to double check those calculations.

@ September 8, 2006 6:16 PM in Geothermal with mod/con?

I have a customer interested in a water to water geothermal system for a new construction home with radiant floor heat. I realize low water temps are key with these systems, but the floors should run at some pretty low temps on anthing but a design day of -5. I will be using a Knight 80,000btu mod/con with a Climate Master 5 ton unit. The boiler will handle an inderect and the additional heat needed to meet the load (53,000 BTU). My main question is, how in the world do I control a high tech mod/con boiler with a low tech on/off heat pump and control the heat pump for cooling? Is the heat pump really going to be that much more efficient than the boiler? (Nat. gas 1.35/therm, Electric .10/KW) I have the computer program that compares these systems, however I have read on the Wall many times that you cannot compare a mod/con boiler by AFUE, wich is exactly what this program does. I have installed forced air geothermal units with success, but I am not quite sold on the water to water units. I guess what I'm after is some real world data that can help justify the added expense of the geothmal unit, loop field, buffer tank, chilled water coil, etc. Thanks, Nick.

@ August 17, 2006 10:29 AM in Simple Comfort Chiller?

Does anyone have any imformation on who makes this product or maybe a website address? I know Josh (The Youngster) mentioned this in post a while back, but I can't find anything on the web. Thanks

Reset curve?

@ March 22, 2006 5:34 PM in Vito w WPRads and Fl Boxes

Very nice install. Do the floor boxes and panel rads run on the same reset curve? Also, how did you size the fin tube since they are not in a conventional cabinet with an open bottom? Please do not take this as criticizism, just curious. Nick S

Freeze protection

@ March 20, 2006 11:04 AM in Vitodens / Unico configuration

You could use an aquastat strapped to the piping near the Unico. Set it to turn the pump on at a pipe temperature of 40 degrees or so to provide freeze protection. Set the differential as high as it goes to keep the pump from short cycling. Why waste energy heating the Unico when all you need is to keep the water above freezing. Nick
