Look at using Viega fostapex tubing for hot water boiler systems. This is a full size Pex tubing with aluminum that works as the oxygen barrier plus the aluminum keeps the Pex pipe from drooping and growing when hot boiler water is run through it. Check it out here http://www.viega.net/cps/rde/xbcr/en-us/Viega_FostaPEX.pdf this is a great product.Cleaning water boiler system before installing condensing gas boiler
@ May 16, 2012 3:58 PM in Cleaning water boiler system before installing condensing gas boiler
Water boiler system installed new in 1957. The boiler is now fired with oil owner wants to install a condensing gas boiler. What product can be added to the water in the boiler and system to help flush and clean out the system before installing the condensing gas boiler? What is the best way to clean out the old system? With the old boiler still installed or flushing the system after taking the old boiler out? This is a building with eight apartments and all are on one zone.Indirect water heater
@ May 12, 2012 8:32 AM in Using an indirect HW with smaller boiler
Check with the manufacture of the indirect you are going to be using and what BTU input boiler and they can tell you the GPH you will get. Look at storing the water in the indirect at a higher temp like 160*F and use a temp valve to reduct temp going to faucets to 120*F. You can also give the indirect priority over heating zones to make sure you get the hot water needed. You can also use Delta 52655 1.5 GPM shower head or their 52657 2.0 / 1.5 GPM adjustable shower head.Invest money on a new boiler

What happens in a year or two when your EFM steel boiler starts leaking after spending money on a gas conversion burner and you then need to buy a new boiler? Invest money now with a new condensing gas boiler. Look at getting a bid on a triangle tube condensing gas boiler with stainless steel heat exchanger. Look at their prestige solo boiler with a smart stainless steel indirect water heater for domestic hot water. Also look at their prestige excellence boiler with built in SS indirect water heater all in one unit. Where do you live. I live in Catasauqua Pa and EFM is a local company. I went from a cast iron Weil McLain oil boiler to a condensing triangle tube PE110 boiler nat gas and I have cast iron radiators and this boiler works great. You can lower your heating and domestic hot water costs from 30% to 50% or more. Send me a email I know many contractors in the Lehigh Valley area that you can get a bid from..Tankless gas water heaters
@ May 3, 2012 7:51 PM in Critical article on Tankless water heaters
I am a salesman for a P&H wholesaler and when I talk to contractors about TGWH I do not push the energy saving like all the TGWH manufactuers do. I tell contractors that home owners can take shower after shower after shower and never run out of hot water. TGWH are expensive to install in retro fit jobs because of venting plus upgrading the gas line to a larger size. If home owners are running out of hot water I would check their shower heads to see how many GPM is coming out of them. Reducing 2.5 GPM shower heads down to 1.5 GPM makes a big difference. Delta has a great 1.5 GPM shower head. If there is a tank type water heater you can store the water at a higher temp and use a mixing valve at the water heater. The life of a tankless gas water heater should be 20 years or so. How much maintenance will be needed in 20 years of use. Tank type water heater life could be 10 to 15 years or more if flushed out often and if anode rode is changed every two to three years. In today's tough economy I believe most contractors need to get as many jobs as possible and you have to work hard and sell the home owner to go tankless and most home owners are looking for a competitive water heater installed and most replacement water heater jobs are when the old water heater died and they need want hot water now. This is a great water heater. If you have hard water and do not use a water softener this unit has the burner on top and the flue goes down and comes out the side of the tank at the bottom. So when it makes hot water any build up of hardness will end up on the bottom of the tank and not effect the efficiency of this water heater. Regular water heaters with the burner on the bottom and as hardness builds on the bottom of the tank the unit will use more energy to heat the water lowering the efficiency of this type of water heater. Plus the more heat on the bottom of the tank the more stress on the steel and the water heater will fail sooner. Take a look at using Delta 52665 low flow shower heads 1.5 GPM they work great.Boiler gas / hot water heat
@ April 22, 2012 6:15 PM in best high eff. gas boiler/ hot water heater
Take a look at Triangle Tube Prestige Excellence PE110 110,000 BTU input boiler with built in 14 gallon stainless steel indirect water heater that delivers 180 GPH domestic hot water. Use Delta 52655 1.5 GPM shower heads and you can run two showers at one time or run one 2.5 GPM shower head. Their Challenger combi boiler is ok but make sure you do not have hard water copper coil for domestic hot water is small. If no softener is used look at installing Cuno / Aquapure AP430 filter.Booster pump
@ April 21, 2012 8:05 AM in Residential Booster Pump
Take a look at using Aquaboost II made by Goulds Pumps. Set the system at 50 or 60 PSI and the pump will give constant pressure no matter how many faucets that are open. Control on pump takes 230 V single phase and the converts it to 230 V three phase and the motor runs faster as more faucets are opened and then slows down as faucets are closed. Great system.Indirect or tankless
@ April 8, 2012 8:31 PM in Indirect or Tankless
If you go tankless you might need to make the gas line larger to handle the TGWH plus boiler and any other gas appliances plus you must vent it. If you go indirect some come with a lifetime warranty check the warranty first plus you do not need to vent it. You could also look at A O Smith Vertex 50 gallon water heater only 76,000 BTU input and delivers 127 gallons first hour and 92 gallons continuous this output is double the regular 50 gallon power vented tank type water heater. Take a look ar reducing your shower heads to low flow like the Delta 1.6 GPM model.TGWH & WM Ultra
@ April 4, 2012 9:33 PM in venting tankless water heater & weil Mclain Ultra 155
Use the boiler and a indirect water heater. You will need to make sure your gas line is large enough. Some TGWH have BTU inputs 180,000 to 199,000 plus the boiler that needs 155,000 BTU input. Plus you need to vent both units.oil boiler to condensing LP gas Triangle Tube boiler
@ April 4, 2012 1:54 PM in oil boiler to condensing LP gas Triangle Tube boiler
Home owner has old steel oil boiler with domestic coil and wants to put TT PE110 LP gas boiler in. Nat gas not available.Oil btu is 139,000 per gallon and LP gas is 91,800 BTU per gallon
home owner will buy his LP tank so he can shop for competitive LP pricing
They have one heating zone 14,000 BTU copper baseboard
The addition to the house has radiant heat.
One radiant heat zone is 14,500 BTU
One radiant heat zone is 7,500 BTU
One padiant heat zone is 7,500 BTU
another zone copper baseboard zone at about 42,000 BTU but the heat loss in that zone is 25,000 BTU
will these small BTU zones effect the efficiency of this boiler?
home owner does not want to stay with oil.
any thoughts.

make sure you get a good low flow shower head. The alsons 655C is not a cheap shower head but it works great. Alsons is now a Delta shower head they are now the same company. Delta # 52655 chromeIndirect

Take a Triangle Tube Smart 80 SS IDWH store the water at 140* F or 160* F and then run it into a 80 gallon electric water heater with the elements hooked up and then a temp valve before going to the faucets. Still use 1.6 GPM shower heads in the kids bath rooms. These shower heads will also lower their water and sewer bill.Indirect

Dont just blow off using the Alsons 1.6 GPM shower head. I have two daughters with hair very long and this shower head provides pleanty of water to wash and rinse their hair. This shower head has a sprat pattern that as the water gets farther away from the shower head the pattern gets wider giving a large coverage area plus the water drops are designed larger so they stay warm. Try it on one shower and see how they like it what do you have to loose.Indirect

Why don't you see if replacing old 2.5 GPM shower heads with Alsons / Delta 655C 1.6 GPM shower heads makes a difference. Three showers at 2.5 GPM equals 7.5 GPM vs three showers 1.6 GPM equals 4.8 GPM. Plus you could store the water at 140* F and use a temp valve down to 120* F and see if these changes make a difference before spending big money for a large indirect water heater.Drain waste heat recovery

Your contractor can get you a 5 or 10 year parts and labor warranty on the Triangle Tube boilers. If the contractor does not have a parts kit his local wholesaler should that way they will have access to most common parts fast. We have been selling them for five or six years and not many parts were sold.
