What is a split zone for HWBB??

I have 6 zones in my house, but one zone is labelled split and it seems to be in my main living area. I asked a contratcor who told me that sometimes they split a zone and you can control it better by partially closing the valve. Now in the middle or a cold NE winter it seems that this baseboard seems to be hot more than the thermostat is telling it to.

Can someone explain what this split zone is and how it works? Thank you

I am thinking I may have a lack of air in my utility room. This is starting to look like a safe way to ensure I have plenty of air for combustion and not have to worry as much. But I am concerned that the room air is always around 70* and outside air temps will change wildly during the year even in heating season.

Will this cause an issue, I mean I can have the burner setup when its installed but that's only at that time.

The write up and info claims some big savings for heat. And FC seems to be a solid company and the safety switches seem good, have you had any experience with this, and did you see any savings? Also I am concerned that cleaning the flue will be a real pita after this is on there with wires, etc. Ty

Radon system causing slight backdraft

I recently installed a radon system. The radon was fairly low 4.6 at the test and my house has a french drain feeding into my sump pit. I fabricated a lexan cover with a gasket sealing it to the sump and the vent pipe draws from the sump. It seemed to work very well and I had planned to test in a few weeks to confirm it has helped.

But...

This morning I noticed that I could smell the faint smell of exhaust in the room. When the system is running there seems to be no issue.

However when it sits for several hours and almost cools down completely there is a slight backdraft, so what I am smelling is the scent of the pipe.

I am looking into reducing the radon fan speed to help since I don't think I need that much output and I checked all the seals on the system and none are actively pulling in room air, but I did see that in the boiler room the gap between the floors and walls is pulling air slightly. So I will be calulking those gaps tonight hoping that it may help.

It does appear that it is only slightly pulling air through a cold chimeny but I would obviously like to avoid it and it would probably get worse during the einter as the house is closed all the time.

Have you run into this issue before or have any thoughts?

So in an effort to resolve a small carbon buildup problem on the F4 bruner after about a month of good running operation I went with Peerless's recccomenation for the WBV-04 and installed the Hago 1.10/80B. Installed it, checked Z, S, electrodes are right on, good fuel supply and new filters.

Installed the Hago and now every start if you are next to the boiler you catch a small puffback smell, no noticeable smoke, but just enough to smell it which wasn't happening before.

Decided to recheck all measurements again and everything appears correct. I haven't used Hagos before, always Delevans with no issues. I also noticed that their was oil on the nozzle and base when I removed it. The tube is new and the nozzle was correctly torqued so I am wondering if posibbly the nozzle could be bad.

The burner is an AFG with the cleancut pump and genesys control with a 15 sec prepurge. It is a soft sounding clean light so no booms or other loud issues. Maybe Hago is not as good? Any ideas would be appreciated

I agree and prefer Delevan also but Peerless only rates just one Delevan in this series boiler, so I am wondering if perhaps there is a reason for the style.

Yes you are correct. Peerless publishes these versions of their boiler and the same 4 section can be run (per Peerless) in the following setups and nozzle types. I contacted PB about the issue and the tech did tell me they see the .85 I am running much less often than the 1.10 Hago and that I should not experience troubles with that Nozzle. I think at this point, I will give the hago a try and it is really isn't much more consumtpion and is probably a better match for this somehwhat larger boiler.

The boiler is 8 years old. The burner is completely new, old setup was the same afg but running a 1.25gph and was wasting heat and short cycling. New burner, transformer, cleancut pump. Pump checked at 140psi, gaskets and seals all new and working.

The carbon issue is definitely accumulating on the upper portion of the retention ring, which was also replaced and is a F4. The carbon forms a crust that actually extends maybe a 1/2" past the ring and eventually shorts making the system not turn on. The boiler has been cleaned, vacd.

Did just notice that the draft is .03" but the barometric control was set a bit to loose and was cutting the draft back. I am wondering if this could have played a part.

Have a Peerless WBV-04 currently setup with a Delevan .85gph 80* nozzle, per the energey star specs on their site. However about once a month there is hard soot building up on the nozzle and electrodes and shutting down the system. Draft is .03" and it is running well otherwise. When the system has shut down I have seen a small amount of oil mist in the lad tube, not much but enough so it looks as though it may have sucked some back. Most literature says for this firing the low rate baffle should be used, but is not indicated by Peerless. Any ideas on what it might be or other areas to check. More than likely will just upgrade to their specific 1.10 hago B nozzle, but the oil consumption of the delevan is excellent and meeting all the heating needs, so I would like to keep the original size. thank you for any assistance.

Hago does manufacture B and ES nozzles. The ES are specified for specific applications and do have a different pattern than the B type which focus more fuel towards the center than the ES. I contacted them since no one had answered yet so hope this helps if you are looking.

My ductwork is in bad shape, and I want to replace it, and the nordfab claims that it is 100 percent seamless and certainless seems to be the best piping around. They rate it at up to 600* which should be adequate. Is anyone using their piping off your boiler installs? thank you

Not sure about this, but are there Hago B nozzles any longer? Are B and ES (Extra Solid) the same? The specs call for a Hago 1.10B and my supplier had Hago 1.10ES. Thank you

This winter my system shutdown and after another month there is excessive carbon buildup on the electrodes, and even some oil spray inside the blast tube. Upond close inspection the S dimension on was set to 2 3/8" and it should be 2 13/16" which seems a pretty substantial difference to me, and it ha been adjusted. Everything else appears to be correctly set and tuned, does this seem that it could have been the cause of the buildup?

I understand the downdraft issues but I don't think its a matter of not having enough air to draw in. I think the issue is the fact I installed two individual flue caps next to each other and the oil flue isn't able to disperese its pressured exahust straight out, so when it hits the top of the cap it splits and one side of it is right next to the other cap for my fireplace and some id draw down.

I am going to remove the oil cap and see if the problem is gone.

I realized today that I have a lousy problem.  Basically I have 2 flues, one for oil heat ex and one for fireplace.  We dont use the fireplace and I noticed the smell of oil exahust from the fireplace.  This year I installed two small stainless caps on each flue and the edges are touching one another, so I think what is happening is that when the oil heat runs, the warm air goes up and the oher flue which is ice cold here, always has a slight downdraft and when I opened the damper, the exahust smell is very strong coming in.  The temp fix is that I plugged the fireplace flue with insulation and that seemed to have stopped it for now.

Is this common or what have you done to solve it, I think my best choice may be a sealing plate on the top of the fieplace flue or to install an insert with its own liner and cap.  Thank you

Hi, my exahust pipe is pretty beat and I dont think its weel sealed. Does anyone make a better quality pipe or offer the insulation that goes over it.  Also is stainless an option for this pipe?  Thank you
