Most HVAC systems waste energy by heating or cooling empty rooms – spaces that are unoccupied nearly half the time. Auto-Away solves this inefficiency with a first-of-its-kind HVAC advancement that uses proprietary radar-based occupancy detection to identify when rooms are empty and automatically shift them to an energy-saving mode, reducing unnecessary energy use and lowering energy bills.
Unlike other systems, Quilt’s radar technology doesn’t rely on cameras or motion alone. It uses privacy-first millimeter-wave sensing to detect occupancy and make real-time adjustments, all while ensuring homeowner data stays private. It’s a major technical breakthrough in embedded sensing, bringing intelligent, responsive control to home climate for the first time.
This feature, deployed today to all installed Quilt systems via over-the-air update, has already shown dramatic impact. In a test in one Bay Area home, Quilt’s smart features (including Auto-Away) reduced energy use by 44% compared to maintaining the home at one temperature.
Energy Usage, launched in tandem, gives homeowners unprecedented visibility into their energy consumption, tracking usage in real time, by room, by hour, and by day. For the first time, homeowners can see how their home climate system uses energy throughout the day and understand how features like Auto-Away are driving measurable efficiency improvements.
